N5VLZ:
It's hard to believe it's August, which
means that September and cooler weather
are on the way, as well as our next net
holiday, Labor Day, Monday September 1.
I've had a major amateur radio emphasis
since Friday. Last Friday, I had to get
some petty cash from the bank for the
license exam session this past Saturday;
which combined with money paid at the
session, will go for the Shreveport
hamfest this Saturday, then I did the
Trains Net Friday night. Next, I had to
prepare the audio transcript for the
latest issue of the QCWA Journal. On
Saturday, after the QCWA Sunflower Net
in the morning, I did an amateur radio
license exam session at the University
Of Arkansas At Little Rock (UALR),
where I'm an alumnus, with a Bachelor
Of Arts in Radio, TV, and Film. We had
2 candidates pass their Technician and
General, plus 1 Technician upgraded to
General. We had 7 Extra Class VE's
(including myself), and 1 General Class
VE; so it was a fantastic exam session.
It was the first time I had filled up
the test session report list with VE's!!
After the session, the VE who provided
me transportation, took us to eat lunch
at a nearby Long John Silver's (I wish
they didn't use so much breading)...but
the food was good, and we got time to
visit (I chose to pass on the rich
cheesecake). After I got back home, I
took a nap, before doing the QCWA CQ200
and Arkansas 158 Nets. I didn't need to
scan in the exam data for ARRL/VEC until
Sunday...which also had the QCWA Digital
Net, and the Arkansas D-Star Net. So,
today was "a recovery day", where I slept
much of the time (I'll probably have
insomnia tonight). But, I won't get much
sleep Friday night into Saturday, as I
have an early wakeup call and pickup to
go to the Shreveport Hamfest. At least I
won't be doing the driving. I still have
to print several items for it, but I have
a few days to finish that.
Except for last Friday and Saturday, the
rest of last week had storms every day.
We are in a hot and dry pattern now,
although we got a few days with highs in
the 80s, and lower humidities. At least
we'll have good weather for the weekend
Shreveport trip.
Speaking of weather, tropical Storm Dexter
is in the Atlantic, just "a fish storm".
But, Tropical Cyclone Erin may become a
major hurricane threat to the US at the
end of next week. The first model run had
it going across Florida and heading toward
Mississippi, and Alabama...the next run had
it heading toward the Georgia/Carolinas...
and the latest run had it skirting the Outer
Banks, and heading toward New England. It's
still too early to know for sure, but the
time to prepare is now.
In the latest issue of The Radiogram from
the PCARS Club in Ohio, there's a 2 page
article on how to set up Linux Mint Cinnamon.
Go to portcars.org -- click on Newsletter, and
then download the August 2025 issue in PDF
format. The article is on pages 29 and 30.
GE Bob (NY), how was your week?? >>>
**
NS2B:
GE All!
Busy - and not slowing down!
Late last week, ran out to Niagara Falls,
and saw Darius Rucker at the Seneca Niagara
Casino.
Spent the night there and then toured around
the America side of Niagara Falls. I've been
to the Canadian side many times, but always
skipped the American side 'cause everyone says
"well there's not much there". Well "everyone"
is wrong! Granted there's no amusement park
like the Canadians have, but there's plenty
to see!
Then, we headed out to Syracuse to look after
MJ's mom as usual.
Got back this morning, now I'm dragging out
all the camping gear for our upcoming NASCAR
Weekend down at Watkins Glen. I'm looking
forward to that. Always good fun!
Heard back from the ship regarding my Alinco.
He had to replace the drive level pot but
says it's all good to go now. So I'm waiting
for that to get back here.
That's it for me. BTU Daryl >>>

N5VLZ:
Bob, you're trying to beat me for busy
(hi hi). FB on the Darius Rucker concert,
the trip to Niagra Falls, the NASCAR deal,
and on the Alinco. The one song I remember
from him is the "come back song".
GE Scott, you'll be after Carl.
GE Bob (OK), how was your week?? >>>
**
KF5TVG:
GE Daryl and all on the net!
I'm always jealous when I hear Bob (NY)
talk about races at Watkins Glen!!
We celebrated 51st wedding anniversary this
week. Only feels like 100! Hi Hi!
XYL is suffering from bone-on-bone in her
right knee. Until very recently, it was the
"good" knee. Probably need to have it
replaced next month. Her other knee was
replaced in 2016... only to be recalled a
few years later.
Hope this one goes smoother for her.
Nothing to report on the radio front this
week, so I'll pass it back to Daryl.>>>
**
N5VLZ:
Bob, first...Happy Anniversary. Marriage
isn't a word, but a (life) sentence (hi hi);
till death do you part. Sorry to hear about
her knee problems.
GE Rosti, you'll be after Scott.
GE Carl, how was your week?? >>>
**
KX4AC:
GE All. First off, I definitely agree with
Bob, the American side of the Falls has
plenty to see and do.

to them in a bit.
GE Scott, how was your week?? >>>
**
K0WAV:
Good evening to all on the net. Week was not
one to talk about much.
I made a few more 6m contacts up to 42 States
confirmed. I have 5 band Worked all States on
2 of 3 logbooks I used... just missing a
confirmation for Mississippi on 10m on the
LoTW for that 5 band WAS.
Glad the heat broke. And that is about all I
have tonight. BTU Daryl >>>
**
KX4AC:
Not sure what happened there, but anyway I
was pretty much done. Back to net >>>
**
N5VLZ:
First, Carl...no problem...technology, phooey.
Scott, FB on the 5 band WAS...hope you can get
that. The heat will return, but cooler weather
is on the way.
GE Rosti, how was your week?? >>>
**
KC3FQF:
GE Daryl and everyone on the net
Sorry, little late with connection.
Not much here, I purchased kenwood ts-2000
used and been playing with it, never had one
TNC in it little strange but i am learning it.
BTU
**
N5VLZ:
Rosti, I still have an MFJ 1270C TNC with me,
but I might take it to Shreveport, and see if
someone wants it.
No problem about the connection...Carl had some
issues, and I got dumped before the net. NS2B
let me know about the keep alive function...it
was off (oops!).
That's it for round 1, back to the top for final
comments.
Bob (NY), thanks for the use of the BBS...anything
else?? >>>
**
NS2B:
Bob (OK) - you make it up here for NASCAR - we
got a campsite for you just outside turn 7 -

Thanks for being here, Scott...have a good week.
Rosti, anything else?? >>>

KC3FQF:
Quick question, when new BBS asks you for home
BBS, do you use call of your central mail BBS?
**
N5VLZ:
Let me defer to NS2B for that...Bob (NY) can you
answer that?? >>>
**
NS2B:
Yes, use the HA address of the BBS that you
claim as you home BBS. For instance this bbs
is NS2B.#WNY.NY.USA.NOAM - so that's what I enter
as my home bbs >>>
**
KC3FQF:
Ok, if i want it to be N3MEL-2 do I ask Glenn to
set it up?
**
NS2B:
Rosti, you would have to get the packet address
from Glenn for that. You just use glenns bbs
address. let me look.
**
KC3FQF:
Got it, will do, thamk you for help gents.
nothing else, BTU>>>
**
NS2B:
N3MEL.#EPA.PA.USA.NOAM >>>
**
N5VLZ:

BBS address. Anything else?? >>>
**
KC3FQF:
nothing else, BTU>>>
**
N5VLZ:
Thanks for being here, Rosti...and thanks Bob
for the help. This is my home BBS.
That will do it for tonight's net. I will post

aware, and radio active. 73 and GN DE N5VLZ >>>
