N5VLZ:

GE, all and welcome to the Aug 18 2025
PCL Net. No early checkins.

Net order is Daryl, Bob (NY), Carl,
Scott, Rick, and whoever else shows up.

Our next net holiday is 2 weeks from
tonight, Labor Day, Sep. 1. The PCL
Net will be QRT that evening.

I've been doing a lot of work for the
QCWA lately, and am planning for the
Mena Hamfest on Sep. 6. It's 55 years
running, the oldest hamfest west of
the Mississippi River. I have a photo
of myself, plus the other QCWA 158
officers from the Shreveport Hamfest;
please email me if you'd like a copy.

I ran out of shredded lettuce and the
vine ripened tomatoes, but sandwiches
with just bacon strips and mayo are
better than peanut butter and jelly.
I can't get new groceries until next
month. I'll save the PB&J for later,
and get more low sodium fully cooked
microwave bacon, shredded lettuce,
vine ripened tomatoes, mayonnaise,
and wheat bread next month. It just
tastes good, and it's a little cheaper
than tuna salad. We will be eating at
a catfish buffet on the way back from
the Mena Hamfest.

My late Mom's Windows 10 32-bit system
got so lethargically slow, that I just
shut it down. I tried to put Linux on
it, but the motherboard is too old. I
have a laptop, a BeeLink computer, and
a desktop, all with Windows 11 Pro.
With Windows 10 support ending in early
October, I figured it was time to put
it out to pasture.

I tried to switch out one of my monitors,
but I will have to order a mini HDMI
connector to VGA adapter next month, to
work with the laptop system. So, each
system is back to one monitor, so it gets
crowded when I do nets!!

My area has hit 100 the last 2 days, and
we're under either Extreme Heat Warnings
or Heat Advisories for the next several
days. Isolated strong to severe storms
with damaging winds develop in the heat,
but I don't think I've had any rain since
late July. I'm more than ready for the
cooler weather, but I'm watching the
tropics, as they bring our fall tornado
season.

GE Bob (NY), how was your week?? >>>

**

NS2B:

GE All!

It was a quick week. I don't know where
the time went!

It was kinda warm here but cooled off
today. Currently 64F - downright pleasant!

I do Hamword on Winlink. Usually I take
several guesses before I get it. In fact,
last week I used up all my guesses, and
didn't get it. Today, I got it on the 2nd
guess! That's a first.

Speaking of tomatoes, my garden is producing.
I picked a dozen or so in the last week. I'm
pleased with that.

I need to go shopping for a Win11 computer.
I'm almost thinking the node will go to
Linux, but not firm on that yet.

That's all for me. BTU Daryl >>>

N5VLZ:

Bob, FB on the weather (I'm jealous of your
temperature), HamWord, Tomatoes, and the
computer. I've got several utilities with
it, and have it working the way I want it.

GE Carl, how was your week?? >>>

**

KX4AC:

GE All.

Most of my week was dealing with doctors and
tests getting ready for colon surgery to make
sure we got all the cancer when they removed
the polyp. I still have one more appointment
this coming Friday and then we can schedule
surgery. I did get to talk to the surgeon,
and she seems very nice, if a little younger
than I expected.

Yesterday, we drove up into the mountains to
Payson, just to get away for a bit. It was 105
here at home, but up in Payson, it barely got
to 91. We found a great cowboy-themed restaurant
with excellent cornbread, Mackay's Grill. We also
stopped at Natural Bridge State Park. I could not
manage the tough hiking trails, but we saw some
nice scenery on the easy trails.

If only I was 20 again :-)

Not too much on the ham radio front. I do also
play Hamword each week. I usually take at least
four guesses, and the ones with repeated letters
seem to be the hardest for me.

I built a nixie clock last week. It is now happily
blinking away on my bookshelf. I really like nixies.

I think that's about it for tonight. Back to net >>>

**

N5VLZ:

Carl, on being 20 again, join the club (hi hi). Second,
GL on the colon surgery. I talked to another ham last
week, who had to have part of his colon removed, and an
ostomy set up. Comedian Bill Engvall had a young YL for
his surgeon, and he said "she was gorgeous...and my wife
set this up"!! Jeff Foxworthy's colonoscopy deal on YouTube
is a scream. I still haven't set up HamWord, as I was never
good with word games, but love Pyramid Solitaire. FB on
the restaurant...on the way back from Mena on Sep. 6, we
are going to an all you can eat catfish buffet.

GE Scott, how was your week?? >>>

**

K0WAV:

GE well it was hot today... we over achieved... they
were calling for Heat Index of 106...we hit Heat Index of
110.1 with a base temp of 101.8! so hottest day of the year
so far.

I have continued work on shack power... as usual... waiting
on parts.

I did hit a nice 6m opening and was able to SSB from NW AR
to SE UT. and it was FM repeater quality on SSB. it was very
exciting.

Joplin Ham Fest is this coming weekend Aug. 22 and 23.
Looking to get some of the club together to make a "field
trip" outing hahaha.

Other than that short week, and that is all for me

BTU Daryl >>>

**

N5VLZ:

Scott, that's how QCWA Chapter 158 (its officers) are going
to the Mena Hamfest. I didn't even go outside today, and I
hope it's cooler at Mena. As for waiting on parts, it's like
the meme where FedEx, UPS, and DHL, text you saying they'll
deliver sometime before 5pm. Amazon says "we made the delivery
at your apartment...look in your bathroom" (hi hi). FB on the
6m opening.

GE Rick, we know you've been taking care of Arlene...how are
things going?? >>>

**

VA7RBP:

GE Daryl and all on NET.

Sorry, I missed the last couple of weeks.

Arlene's knee replacement surgery was supposed to happen on
July 28, but she got an infection and they cancelled the surgery.
She's doing antibiotics until the infection is under control, then
they will do a review on Sept 11 and decide on a re-schedule date.
She was pretty ticked off, as she has been waiting a couple of
years now. We are hoping it will happen before Winter, don't relish
having to drive the passes in snowing conditions.

Radio wise, it'e been pretty crappy on 40M and 20M PACTOR, some
days it ok, then it isn't.

No extreme weather here. Temp today has been around 77F and
cloudy, but it will warm up again through the week.

I've been spending most of the time reading... just lazy...

Well, that's about it for me, so BTU Daryl >>>

**

N5VLZ:

Rick, bummer on Arlene getting the infection, resulting in the
cancellation of the surgery. I can't blame her for being angry.
I hope the antibiotics work, and you can get it done before
winter. As for band conditions, I've heard the same thing. It's
too hard on my eyes to read a book anymore, and I just scan
through articles I see on the web.

That's it for round 1...back to the top for final comments.

Bob, thanks for the use of the BBS...anything else?? >>>

**

NS2B:

Nothing more here - everyone have a good week! 73 >>>

**

Thanks for being here, Bob.

Carl, anything else?? >>>

**

KX4AC:

Nothing more from me. Everyone have a good week. 73s all
around >>>

**

N5VLZ:

Take care, Carl...hope the medical stuff goes well.

Scott, anything else?? >>>

**

K0WAV:

That is it from EM36ek, everyone have a greate week and
73! >>>

**

N5VLZ:

Have a good week, Scott...stay on the cool side of the
door.

Rick, family and health come first...get in here when you
can. Anything else?? >>>

**

VA7RBP:

I almost forgot, next Monday is our 52nd Wedding
Anniversary, so I'll miss the NET, and I guess the Labor
Day Holiday is the following week, so I'm going to miss
a few weeks...

Everyone have a great couple of weeksm, stay well, 73
until next time! BTU Daryl >>>

**

N5VLZ:

Rick, first, Happy early Anniversary...you had better
NOT forget that!1 Reminds me of the meme where the OM
asked his XYL what the WiFi password was...she said
"our wedding anniversary date". He growled "she did
that on purpose!!" (hi hi). We'll hold the fort down
while you're gone...thanks for being here.

That will do it for tonight's PCL Net. I'll post the
scribe either later this evening or in the morning.

Stay safe, healthy, weather aware, and radio-active.

73 and GN DE N5VLZ >>>
