Good Morning all...
Just copied the 1530z pass of SEEDS over FN02. What a great satellite!
The digitalker is very reminiscent of what DOVE was supposed to have
been...and the SSTV picture is quite a bit of fun as well.
Nice solid picture on that pass.
Does anyone have any info on a possible homepage for SEEDS?

A big problem on small satellites (cubesats) is how to match
antennas.
Simply connecting a network analyzer, or MFJ antenna analizer or
any other test equpment won't work. Connecting a cable to the
satelltie model will completely upset the near-field and any
useful measurements.
Especiallly, trying to match a 2 meter antenna to a 4" cubesat!
I wonder if the best way is to simply do the best you can with
EZNEC or other modeling tool, then build a true fidelity model
spaceframe with the fully designed and implemented mathcing
network, but reserve one side of the model to have a
field-strength meter on it connected internally to the actual
TX/RX cable to the antenna.
Then using long insulated dielectric "tweakers" just tune the
matching circuit for max. (Of coures getting out of the way
after each tweak).. Also, then comparing the results with a
similar field strength meter and tuned dipole as a reference at
the same distance.
We tried lots of methods, including building in a directional
coupler and having it report its reflected power via
telemetery... but I think the one above is what I will do next
time.
When the spacecraft is small, relative to a quarter wave,
everything near the spacecraft and any wires/cables have drastic
impact..
Has anyone had other successes? Just thinking what we should be
telling these students that are building cubesats. A 6" whip
for 70cm is not too bad on a 4" cubesat, but 2m is compltely
different...

Hi!
Thanks to all the stations that worked K7RDG at the Larry Warren
Cochise Amateur Radio Association hamfest yesterday. We made 31
contacts on 3 passes (2 on AO-51, 1 on SO-50). All stations who
made contacts will receive K7RDG QSL cards directly.
Although it will not be necessary to send anyone a card to receive
a K7RDG card, I will act as the QSL manager for yesterday's activity
only. I am not the normal QSL manager for the K7RDG call, but have
offered to take care of the QSL-related stuff from yesterday.
I'll send a longer report on the hamfest activity and my other
activity from southeastern Arizona (including last night's quick
road trip east to grid DM51) after I return home. I'm still in
grid DM41 at the moment, but may be able to visit another unusual
Arizona grid on my return trip. No guarantees.

Hi John,
Here is a quote from Wouter Jan Ubbels PE4WJ (Delfi Team):
.......................
" Tuning can sometimes be difficult, in the presence of Doppler shift,
fading due to polarization changes, frequency offset due to temperature of
the spacecraft oscillators and there is the possibility that the Costas Loop
indicates a false sync because of lock on one of the signal's sidebands. If
possible, you can use a waterfall display in software like MixW running
parallel to RASCAL which will give you an indication of the center
frequency.
During transmission of AX.25 flags, the actual carrier frequency is the
highest peak in the spectrum, with a couple of sidebands exactly 150Hz
apart, looks like a comb. Now, using the waterfall display, tune such that
this highest peak corresponds to 1600Hz +/-100Hz, in order to achieve sync.
"
...........................
...As you can see the last part is very important. The highest peak is the
one that you will center around 1600Hz. You do that by tuning your radio.
Once you have it centered the Doppler control will keep it there (more or
less) and only minor adjustments are necessary afterwards (depend also which
Keppler data you are using).
I have attached pictures of my screen from last night and two days ago. You
can see it on "Spectran". I have that program running on top of Rascal. Try
it, it is fun and don't get frustrated.

Hi Joroen,
Try a hard reset, the software in the 817 may have become corrupted.
Try running with the software COMMANDER I find it works realy well, and it
gives you some more features on the 817. It was written by the authjor of
Ham Radio Deluxe.
Good luck.

SEEDS is in digi/talker/SSTV mode over eastern NA the voice makes's me
remember some old submarine WW 2 film where the radio man listen
"The Tokyo Rose" broadcast. Nice recording with an FM signal peaking at S8 at
TCA 18 degrees elevation. SSTV is also good but as usual i
will have to fiddle with the slant correction parameters. This MMSTV version
i got seems to have an auto slant correction algorythm but as
usual i found that at LOS... :(
I will check for the next pass over here at 0320Z it will be an higher one.
P.S. If someone is fluent in japanease what HARU HARU HARU means? could be
(haro haro haro too)

Dear All,
Below is a pass recording of Cute-1.7+APDII and Compass over West Malaysia.
SEEDS was in digitalker in the earlier pass and due to me setting the mode
to USB instead of FM, I missed that pass.
Time: 2246 Local or 1446 UTC
Maximum Elevation: 64 degrees
http://www.9w2qc.net/amsatbb/cutecompass04may2246.mp3
Sorry for the bad recording towards LOS. Doppler seems to be out - I forgot
to update the keps today :(
