Hi Bruce,

On my TS-2000x I find setting the LOW cut off around 200 Hz (or maybe 100 Hz)
and the HI cutoff around 2600 (or maybe 2400) works pretty well on 1200 BPSK
signals like Delfi-C3.

Give that a try... you can go a bit wider (100/2600), or a bit more narrow
(200/2400)..but 200/2600 should be pretty good.

It is possible to tune for RASCAL by ear. I use the following steps:
1. Tune to find the frequency with the greatest s-meter reading
2. Listen to the tone part of the signal, not the raspy part, and aim
for a note much higher than a regular CW signal.
3. When the green sync light goes on in RASCAL, fine-tune to centre
the signal at 1600 Hz.

Does anyone know how narrow a SSB filter I can apply to this signal? I
have a TS-2000, which is quite adjustable. For now I'm using it wide
open. I know the centre signal is 1600 Hz, which is quite high. How
high/low do the sidebands go?

Hi,

now I am sure with the following TLE:

32787 OBJECT E COMPASS-1
32791 OBJECT J SEEDS

Could hear SEEDS until 0.5 deg elevation.

Those seem likely...
I used object J to track Delfi tonight and it was clearly earlier than
predicted.
So H is late, J early.....
Object G (#32789) seems to be in between those two... So I am guesing
now (waiting for the next pass which will be in an hour) that G is Delfi....

Hi Jeroen,

I find exactly the same. H late, J early.
Still to try G but it looks a good candidate for Delfi.

The first thing I would suggest is to change to 3.50d. TAPR has ROMs and the
image is readily available if you can program EPROMs.

Also check the battery to see if is still alive. If you need parts let me
know as I still have most everything in the kits.

After making these changes let me know your results.

One more addition, if you order a new EPROM, make sure you order the proper
one depending upon whether your box has been upgraded - Basic or Turbo with
80C320 and 22 MHz clock.

Hi,

Thanks for the tip on this bb to use something like Spectran to tune the radio
so that the strongest part of the signal is on 1600 Hz.

Here is an useful observation - constant manual frequency adjustments of the
radio seem to defeat the Costas Loop ? and prevent the software from locking
onto the signal. Get close to 1600 then wait a few seconds to allow the
software to do its job.

Lost sync a few times due to deep QSB but got 172 packets on the afternoon
pass at IO92IO. I am sure this is by no means a record but its a lot better
than I have managerd so far.

Hope this helps.

Hi Bob,

This problem is not new. Walt Maxwell, W2DU had the same problem
when working on antenna for big satellites at RCA Astro-Electronics.
His solution was to use ferrites to decouple the feed cable from the
satellite body. Then you can just use a directional coupler outside
the satellite to measure the return loss.

I have used this and it works pretty well as long as you keep the feed
cables at 90 degrees from the antenna E field. You can use the EZNEC
model to determine the expected E-field.

You need to make sure the ferrites provide at least 10x the impedance
of the antenna at the satellite (i.e. if you expect 35 ohms for the antenna,
you need at least 350 ohms from the ferrites.) Also, you MAY need to
break up any resonances on the cable by putting ferrites every 1/8 wavelength
on the feed cable if you cannot get the cable at a true 90 degrees.

Note that 90 degrees will not likely be directly broadside from the satellite
especially for a 4" cube on 2 meters.

Hello all,

The launch of Delfi-C3 has brought to my attention a very strong birdie at
145.930 MHz that clearly comes from the Linksys WRT54G Wireless router that
sits in the shack. Forcing the wireless signal to another frequency/channel
has no impact whatsoever...

Anybody on the list have a clever solution (other than 'get a different
router' or 'move it' or 'shut it off', etc...hi hi) that they may have used
for a similar problem?

Thanks,

Mark L. Hammond [N8MH]

I just checked the AES website, and it has a "*" after

Perhaps Kenwood is working on a new one to go with the

Mark,

If they ever get around to using it, there is also a nice birdie on 145.870!
My solution is to use ferrites on both the power and Ethernet cables from
the router, and also use the mast mounted preamp. That is far enough away
that the downlink swamps the birdie. Since most of the noise goes away when
you unplug the Ethernet cable to the desktop, I have been considering
switching that to RF as well, as I have an unused PCI card handy.

Another option beyond the ferrites may be to try a different power supply
or AC adapter. Most of these routers are now using a small switching
power supply, which are lighter and smaller than a traditional
transformer-based wall-wart adapter would be for the same
voltage/current requirement.

announcements will come from others that will be there.

I can suggest a couple of things...
Internal or external P/S.... Internal, try torroids. external (wall worth)
try a different P/S.
Use only high quality CAT5E or CAT6 cables. Do not use cheap ones! There is
a difference.

WRT54G can be vastly improved by installing the Linux based OS. I have a
better signal, lower noise and better security. I am much happier. Worth
trying (it will void any warranty).

That is what I can offer. Hope it helps,
Will WC2L
