Tonight, after contact with the seeds website (may not
be relevant) I can't run HRD in satellite mode, gives
me a run time error. Abnormal program termination.
#
it reads from the ICOM ok.

Runs fine on W2K, but no satellite mode.

anyone any ideas?

Hello
Currently the way I have been doing L band is as follows. IC1271A (1.2ghz
xcvr) 10 watts, KJ6KO 60 watt amp to a M squared 23cm22E2 yagi at 50 feet,
through 50 feet of LMR400. The yagi is at 50 feet for terrestial L band.
When we get our next HEO (praying) I will most probably put the 22 el on the
satellite array at 15 feet with the az/el rotor. I have been able to work
through AO-51 with the current set up. The power is enough so some RF gets
squirted up. I am considering a helix for 1.2 for satellites, or even my four
foot dish. So many choices <grin>. Does anyone know what the expected ERP
on L band should be??

Ron,

Been there, Done that. I am using a Directive Systems Looper antenna for
1.2 GHz. With the setup I have, I chose a 6 foot long version with a 30
degree beamwidth rather than the 12 foot long antenna. It works quite well
when AO-51 is put in L/U mode as was done several months back for channel B.
You can check out my satellite antenna setup on QRZ.

I am using the IC-910 with the 1.2 GHz module. Works great. Figure about
half of your output will ever reach the antenna. I selected Belden 9913F7
ultraflex cable which is ideal for my installation. Keep the runs as short
as possible. Probably better, if it works for you, would be LMR-400 or 600
or hardline.

For a given length CP Yagi, the gain of the antenna is going to increase as
the frequency increases (more elements, etc) and beamwidth of the antenna is
going to become more narrow. So pointing the antenna accurately becomes a
more significant factor. It's time to go out and buy the elevation rotor.
You'll find that it is worth every penny you put into it. A beamwidth of 30
degrees on 1.2 GHz gives the half power points as 15 degrees either side of
the antenna position. You don't really want to be 15 degrees off. You want
to keep the satellite well within the main lobe of the antenna. At 1.2 GHz,
starting with 10 watts, figure half of that gets to the antenna. You don't
want to throw away half or all of what's left because the antenna isn't
pointed at the satellite. Elevation control will also reduce your power
requirements on all of your uplinks.

I can only think it's the Keppler data files - it could be crashing with bad

John:

I am using a "budget" rotor from Channel Master for my current setup.
Is that strong enough to support an elevation rotor or do I need to save
up some $$$ and get an AZ/EL rotor ? It looks like Yaesu is the only
option I can find. Are there others that I should look at ?

Sebastian-Currently the best SSB/cw satellite (my opinon) is AO-7.
http://www.planetemily.com/ao7/ao7log.php 432 up and 145 down, from your QTH
you can even "see" a piece of Europe, where there is a lot of activity. I use
an old IC-251A and an IC-451A radios. You really don't need a lot of power.
If money is an issue these old radios are just fine. The FM satellites are ok
if all you want to do is swap grid squares, whereas on AO-7 you can actually
have a conversation. For future HEO satellites you will need 70cm/2M at very
least. Good luck!

Thanks to exteremely fast responses by Simon and
David, I am now ok again.

The problem, for future reference, was caused in
satellite mode on HRD by ADD - ing a second text file
with a different name and different keps for the same
object number. Dunno why I did that! I went to the /
.../ satellites subfolder and deleted the new file -
now ok.

thanks to all

Did anyone have a problem with the 145.88 uplink last week? For some reason
the uplink wiped out my downlink. I had not had the problem before. I probably
am the only one it affected since I have a different down converter set up
than most. I use one of K5GNA converters with the original LO crystal. I
convert the 123.2 Mhz IF to 29.2 Mhz. I have examined all the obvious
harmonic/image/IF combinations but haven't hit on anything I think should be a
problem.

BTW - In response to some of the questions about antennas - I am using a 21
turn helix and had very good signals on the downlink. I did not observe much
fading. I do have a DEM preamp ahead of the downconverter.

Glad to get a chance to check the 2.4 Ghz receive system.

I was able to get on Saturday evening (early Sunday, UTC), and had
mixed results. Using the TranSystem dipole/corner reflector on my
downconverter (K5GNA-modified AIDC3731), it worked great. Even on
a 12-degree eastern pass. When I went to the N connector on the
downconverter and used a "Cantenna" WiFi antenna, I'd wipe out my
IF receiver when transmitting.

>From the downconverter, my coax to my power injector and from there
to the receiver is RG6, to an F-to-BNC adapter for my IF receiver (AOR
AR8200Mk2B handheld wide-band all-mode receiver). I've used other
WiFi antennas before with better results, but those were mounted directly
on the N connector and had no coax run before the downconverter.

I was able to make 3 QSOs on an eastern pass and 1 on a western pass
that evening, not bad for a portable station without computer control for
anything. With the exception of using the AOR receiver instead of my
(now former) VX-2R, this was the same setup I have used in the past and
wrote about in a 2006 AMSAT Journal article. Someday, I'll try this out
with a computer-controlled station... :-)

Next time the S-band transmitter is on, I have a few other antennas
I'd like to try. Maybe I need to reduce, eliminate, or change the
coax from the other WiFi antennas if I plan on using them with the
downconverter.

Hi Bob!

> I heard no stations on the most recent pass, at 2145Z,,, on
> AO-27... amI missing something?

The AO-27 web site shows a period of repeater time at
2146 UTC tomorrow (Tuesday, 13 May), and the program
now available from KA3HSW's web site showed the repeater
should have been on at 2027 and 2208 UTC this afternoon.

For tomorrow, the program is showing the repeater on at
2139 and 2320 UTC for passes that should be workable
here in Arizona. Keep in mind the AO-27 web site's
schedule for the upcoming 24 hours is off by several
minutes, and the program is off by a much smaller amount
(less than 1 minute). Check your pass predictions with sites
like the AMSAT web site, to ensure you are getting accurate
pass information - along with the start time for the AO-27
repeater.
