Hi Kyle,
Just a suggestion...
All downconverters will drift with temperature. The stock AIDC 3731
is spec'd to be within +/- 25 KHz over the temp range. I don't know
what the 145 MHz units are spec'd at but I doubt that it is better.
Other units I have seen are also around this figure and some are a
little worse.
This is not much of a problem on AO-51 becuase there is a nice
strong carrier that is easy to find. On a linear passband like
P3E, it can be extremely difficult to find your own downlink
without QRMing the whole passband.
A better solution and the one that I use, is to put a low
noise preamp at the antenna and put your downconverter inside
your house where the temp is pretty stable. I have mine in the garage
which was fine for AO-40. Leaving the downconverter on all the time
is also helpful. On AO-40, my setup was more stable than the LO
on AO-40 and I could always hear my own downlink. I used InstantTune
(of course!) and loaded the parameters into the config file so it was
simple to just turn it on and work the sat. A fine tuning of around +/-1.5
KHz
was all that was needed to compensate for AO-40 LO drift.
I used an AIDC 3731 downconverter at 123 MHz which is pretty
sensitive but not as good as with the Down East Microwave 13ULNA preamp
which is really, really! good. A second advantage of using a preamp at the
antenna is that the downconverter sensitivity is then not very important
so you can use almost anything, even an old Drake unit.
If you have a really long run of coax, it might be cheaper to add a second
less expensive "booster" preamp and then use RG-6 coax from the preamp to
the
downconverter. I used LMR-600 because I wanted to be able to TX on it but
that is overkill for just receiving P3E.

I am trying to get VUCC and have made several contacts in Canada and
Mexico. In trying to be courteous, I dont just want to drop the cards
in the mail and hope that I get a return. I would like to get local
postage so they can put the card in the mail and get it back to me with
no cost to them.
I have found a link to the Canadian post office and am waiting for a
login to the website so I can order stamps. The Mexican post office
doesnt seem to be as organized in the same way. There isnt a english
page on the site and google translating only gets you so far. What are
my options with getting postage to Mexico ?

I have been an AMSAT-NA member since the early 1982. I have volunteered
extensively for this organization. And have led several key projects.
Despite the negativism I have seen lately, I am still VERY PROUD of this
team and organization. It is not perfect.no organization is. But if you
look at our history, we have done some pretty darn amazing things for a
volunteer organization---past and present.
What I find sad are those on amsat-bb that constantly bash AMSAT-NA. They
provide no help (money or time). And only THEY are right. Are we all
that
short sighted?? I hope not.
We are still doing some pretty amazing things. And we have some great
projects that need three major items to be successful:
1) Money
2) YOUR volunteer time and
3) Some additional leaders to bring these projects to fruition.
So let's stop the petty bickering. That is too easy. Let's do the hard
stuff..lead by volunteering your time and talent ..and let's build some
vehicles that fly in space!

Hello,
>From 20-31 May I will be on holiday in North Scotland, and I take some
amateur radio equipment with me. I will be QRV on LEO voice sats, AO-51
(on the second repeater when available), SO-50, VO-52 and possibly AO-16.
My callsign seems to become MM/PA1IVO/P. For detailed information, query
PA1IVO on QRZ.COM.
There will also be some 'mutual visibility' between North Scotland and
Canada in those days, which is probably not achievable with a portable
setup, but I will see what a set of FT-817s is capable of ;-).

There are many ways to skin the cat... As stated the S-Band down on AO-51
is very easy to work with. The other non-interfering easy and cheaper way
to do it on AO-13 or AO-40 was to simply tune until you found the beacon
and
then do everything based your offset from the beacon.

Canada Post's online ordering bordered on the horrific a year or two
ago. I don't bother with it. I call through their toll-free
1-800-565-4362
number (toll-free for Canada and the USA, available 7am-7pm Eastern
time, Monday through Friday) to place orders. No tax, no shipping
charges, just the face value of the stamps to your doorstep if outside
Canada. This number goes to their stamp-collecting hotline, and you
get on their mailing list for future catalogs etc., but it works well.
Mexico... e-mail me directly. I get, and keep, a small arsenal of
Mexican stamps. It's more important for Mexico-bound mail to
avoid sending "green stamps" with your QSLs if you expect them
to reach their destination. As long as you get a good address for
the XE ham (I may be able to help with that, if you have questions
on what may be listed on QRZ.com), making an SASE with
Mexican postage is the way to go. I have had an almost perfect
record for getting my XE satellite QSOs confirmed down there.
Sometimes, to avoid the occasional black hole of Mexico City's airport
post office/Customs, I will have letters mailed from just across the
border in Mexico. Mail generally takes longer to get to its destination
compared to having it arrive directly from a foreign country (i.e., from
Mexicali - across from Calexico and El Centro, California - to Mexico
City is a 3- to 4-week trip for the Mexican post), but you do avoid some
of the problems that might pop up. Again, I can help you with that if
necessary.
