Alas that may be wishfull thinking. Just been reading the Journal of OAO "ISS"
No.3, February, 2008 at
http://www.iss-reshetnev.ru/images/File/magazin/2008/m3-screen.pdf
and from there it looks like a 145-435 MHz Store-and-Forward system.

Hello all,
I need for my study project to find the RTX for cubesat, which works
on 2.4-2.5GHz
FM. Maybe any modules avaible for buy from internet or any useful information
about IC with integrated RX or TX which can I use for my project will be
great.
Thanks for help

I'm not aware of a patch for XP. Mine ran OK.
For Vista, I needed to install Dosbox ( www.dosbox.com ) and run IT in a
Dosbox window.

Hi Howard and the group...
I successfully updated my LVB from v0.7 to v0.9
The question is: if you only use the LVB Tracker with a USB cable, can you
leave the MAX232 chip installed?
Here is why I ask...
After the successful update, replacement of the USB board and recalibration,
I ran a pass and the LVB behaved normally. I then realized I left the
MAX232 installed. The installation and DIY assembly instructions suggest
you run either the USB board or MAX232 serial but not to have both
installed. Or I cannot read or comprehend the instructions???
The AMSAT fully assembled USB version of LVB Tracker including the case
requires a lot of extra steps to do a firmware upgrade. To remove the USB
board from its socket so that the MAX232 chip can be installed and used, you
have to remove the motherboard from the case. This is the only way for the
USB connector to clear the case so that it can be pulled straight up and
out. Afterwards, to remove the MAX232, there is not enough clearance for a
chip puller so you fiddle around with a small screw driver or something
similar to pry out the chip.
BTW, I took this opportunity to try to upgrade via the USB port and can
confirm it is flaky. The serial upgrade took less than a 1 minute of
processing time to upload the firmware and verify. Using the USB only took
about 1 hour (yes I waited ) and did not verify 100% ( 5 errors - flipped
bits - found in my case ).
Thanks... Alan

It's not a problem caused by Windows XP as such. It's the video card and video
drivers, and the problematic video cards started shipping around the same time
as Windows XP. They run InstantTrack fine in full screen mode, but can't show
the graphics modes used by InstantTrack in a window.
Some such problems can be avoided by running InstantTrack in VGA mode. This
can be done by setting vga_resolution = 2 in the IT.INI configuration file.
A good way to work around the incompatibility is to run InstantTrack inside an
emulation environment that knows how to deal with modern video hardware.
DOSBox is free and works for this purpose.
This is covered to some extent in the InstantTrack FAQ at
http://www.amsat.org/amsat/intro/itfaq.html

Hi Alan
You should have either the MAX232 or the USB board in place, but not both!
Having both devices installed causes contention in the incoming lines and
it's not designed to work that way. You may well get undesired effects. It
only works for you by luck, not by design!

Hello Alan,
Both the USB and Max232 chip are connected to the same data pins on the
microprocessor, so they are both trying to talk to the main routine. It is
no recommended to have both the USB and Serial chip in the unit at the same
time.
This will also draw extra current that wasn't planned for with the heat
sink.
I will be sending out an email to the BB later tonight about the upgrade.

Gould

Folks
Here's a note I've sent privately to some individuals about the 0.9 update,
but I guess due to the response it's wise to spread it more widely.
Firstly, if you're not having any problems then I don't see a need to update
the firmware. The version you have (probably 0.7 or 0.8) has been stable for
many years now and the small change I made for 0.9 is most probably
unnecessary unless you are encountering problems. I've been using Nova for
quite some time (many years) and it was only recently I've been aware of any
problem. Because of the nature of the fault (it's intermittent), it's taken
a while to find it.
Regarding a firmware upgrade, I would only recommend upgrading the firmware
from the serial 'MAX232' port, and only using a 'proper' serial port (not a
USB one). I do know that in the early days of the project I did manage to
program the unit via an emulated USB COM port, but latterly I found it
unreliable and slow if it worked at all.
You could try upgrading through the USB port, but please bear in mind that
if it fails part way through the flash upgrade you'll need to try again
until it's successful: once the flash upgrade has started, it's already
blown away the last code. A failure in programming won't bust the chip
itself, but of course it'll be frustrating if you need to find a machine
with a serial port on it.

Peter,
Thanks for the translated version and to Trevor for pointing us to the
original.
Unfortunately - no hint of a transponder so I'll assume the worst and
just be happy to track and try to decode the interesting download.
Sure wish they would be more forthcoming with information.
No coordination done via the IARU - but then they never have (to the
best of my knowledge).

Hi Ron,
On my WinXP system, the default DOS properties had memory set to
to 512K. This leads to ridiculus error messages like
"insufficient memory" to run the IT map when the system has 1 gigabyte!
To fix this, left-click your DOS Wizard icon and select the "memory"
tab. Set eveything to AUTO and set "protected" and "HMA" and you should
be all set. This set of options is perfectly fine for just about
any DOS application. I suspect MS set the options this way just to make
it a pain in the neck to run DOS programs as all the previous versions
of windows that I have seen defaulted to AUTO.

Thanks Howard and Gould for the speedy responses. MAX232 removed and
business as usual using v0.9
I appreciate Howard's comment about not upgrading unless you have existing
problems, however, some of us like to "run around while carrying scissors".
In the old days I always installed version X.00 of a new operating system
rather than waiting for X.01
I have found one re-occurring problem in that SATPC32 when launching
ServerSDX does not always "see" the virtual serial port used by the USB/LVB
and required a shutdown of SATPC32 and ServerSDX. Turning the G5400B OFF
and ON and then restarting SATPC32 usually results in a ServerSDX
connection. Perhaps the LVB timing change will resolve this problem. Time
will tell.

Hi all,
Well, it's been saved from the dumpster, at least for now. But, I kind of
don't care much about the dish itself - it's probably a bit big /heavy for my
Az/El rotor setup, though it's hard to tell with the huge steel support mount
still attached. I nearly wrenched my back out carrying it over to my side
yard this morning. (I think the Advil is wearing off... oow)
But, back to the pre-amp and other electronics pieces... I found a reference
to the Hughes DirecWay (not wav) service on the Web. Looks like the stuff
runs in the Ku Band (11-14.5 ghz, according to Wikipedia), and has a 0.5-2
watt transmitter, depending on model. Sounds like it's possibly a good bit
out of band for P3E needs, and I'm not much good with microwave hacking. Am I
better off taking another two pills and putting it back on the pile, or is
there a reasonable chance that I can do some simple (think "Drake")
modifications to get it to work?

Subject: [amsat-bb] LVB Tracker software upgrade
To: <amsat-bb(AT)amsat.org>
Message-ID: <758CBB7507EC4AEEA0D1CF8D1BDBADE2(AT)GouldMainPC>

First, I would request that everyone that gets an LVB Tracker Box from AMSAT-
NA to address any problems to Gould Smith, wa4sxm(AT)amsat.org rather than to
Howard. Howard is working on many other important projects for multiple AMSAT
groups. Mike, WB8CXO and I will work with you to resolve any problems
This email is to clarify the effect upon the LVB Tracker boxes delivered via
AMSAT-NA arising from the release of software version 0.9 that Howard Long,
G6LVB has announced.
0. The LVB Tracker boxes sold by AMSAT-NA have software v 0.7 when delivered.
release 0.8 had a fix to make the board work better with the PREDICT
software, v0.7 did work fine in our tests with PREDICT
release 0.9 has a fix to make the 9600 bps communication bit timing
better, the current timing in v0.7 & v0.8 should be
adequate. Any bit timing problems should effect all tracking software
communication, but will effect longer serial data
strings more.
1. If you are not experiencing any problem communicating with your selected
tracking program, this software upgrade probably
is not necessary.
2. We are not shipping the MAX232CPE chip with the boxes because:
a) you cannot/should not run both the USB and serial ports at the same
time
b) we couldn't rationalize the extra expense and time to adequately
package a loose chip so it could be found when
needed
3. We are in the process of packaging some MAX232CPE chips and will make them
available at a reasonable cost through the
AMSAT office within the next two weeks.
4. You cannot reliably re-program the box using the USB port.
5. To re-program the PIC processor using the main board you must:
a) remove the LVB Tracker cover
b) disconnect the LCD, pushbutton and rotor controller cable headers
c) unscrew the four screws holding the main board to the case and
gently remove the main board from the box
d) very carefully remove the USB module from the 28 pin socket. There
are surface mount parts on the bottom of the USB module, so use
extreme caution when prying the module out of the socket.
e) insert the MAX232CPE chip into its socket, making sure to orient it
correctly
f) follow the instructions for running the DOS program Howard wrote to
program the PIC chip via a serial port.
g) remove the MAX232 chip after a successful programming effort
f) insert the USB module back into the 28 pin socket on the main board
g) screw the main board back into the enclosure
h) re-attach the LCD, pushbutton and rotor controller cable headers
i) re-attach the cover
j) go through the calibration procedure again (possibly)
6. We are testing the new software release and after successful testing will
use this in our future LVB Tracker boxes.
We are also testing the LVB Tracker 2, using a different PIC chip and new
software. This chip will replace the one in the current box and with some
proposed hardware additions will make a more versatile unit. There are still
some changes/improvements that need to be made and additional tests run before
we make this available.
Each box is tested, calibrated and made to control a Yaesu rotor from SatPC32
or MacDoppler Pro before shipping. Mike Young, WB8CXO continues to take a
great deal of pride in providing a quality box to those getting these units
from AMSAT.
73,
Gould, WA4SXM
