Jim:

Ron writes about how he uses the AFC. I tried that. It's pretty cool, but
you still have to tune to uplink for doppler. The downlink track perfectly.
I used to have the memory channels set up, actually still do, but now never
use them.

But, with SATPC32, the whole process is automated and works for the SSB
birds too. I only have to touch the IC-910H radio for a four things:
1. Change the PL tone to turn on the SO-50 satellite transmitter. Then
change back to the normal PL.
2. Tune across the bandwidth of the linear transponder SSB / CW satellites
to locate other hams scattered across the transponder passband.
3. Track other SSB operators who are not using doppler control.
4. Turn on or off my preamps when needed or not needed.
Automation is great. It controls my rotors Ken Pro KR-500 and HAM-IV (with
custom home made enhancements to the rotor controllers), my G-5400B AZ-EL
rotors I am using to build a portable setup, tunes for doppler, and can be
set up to automatically switch to selected active satellites, so all you
have to do is talk and log your contacts. A voice recorder helps there in
case you miss something. I still haven't found a way for it to send out the
QSL cards automatically, YET!

Oh yes, I looked at some of the reviews in eHam. There were complaints
about not being able to set separate RX and TX PL tones - The reviewer needs
to read the manual. You do have to be careful. For example, with SO-50, if
you want to turn on the satellite transmitter with a 74.0 PL tone, you have
to know what you are doing. There are 4 different PL tones that can be set.
If you change the wrong one, the satellite won't turn on. You choosing
between Main and Sub band and between RX and TX PL for each of those.

I noticed another reported problem which I do not recall, but that was also
a case of reading the manual.

Whatever you decide to do, have fun. Don't settle for just doing the FM
birds. They are easy. They are a great place to start.

Try this progression: AO-51 (Easiest FM bird), AO-27 (downlink is higher
than published by about 3.5 KHz and it is only on for 7 minutes over North
American Lattitude), SO-50 (need PL), VO-52 (Great SSB bird, LSB Uplink, USB
Downlink), AO-16 (FM Uplink, DSB downlink - Off lately), and AO-07 (SSB, In
daylight only, moderate elevation helps).

Circular polarized yagi antennas with automated elevation and azimuth
control and some preamps pretty much complete that station and will let you
work just about anything as long as you don't have any mountains or other
obstruction in the way.

>I have used the IC910H for several years on the birds and have found it
very friendly to the FM birds. I use two non satellite memories for
each FM bird. One for the VHF uplink and one for the UHF downlink. One
the UHF memory, I store it with AFC enabled so the radio automatically
tunes for the doppler shift on its own.

>Please check my web site at www.ka4kyi.com for more info on how I
operate the birds using the IC910H and other radios. Contact me

Hey, folks, whether RS-30 has some kind of transponder is just rumor
and speculation at this point. I feel (and only represent myself) that
it's very bad form to condemn or harshly criticize the builders of this
satellite, at the very least, until we know what it's capable of. Maybe
it won't do voice, but even a digipeater at that altitude would be a
very nice thing to have.

Submit your space payload ideas now.. "

I wonder if this offers us amsat-ers a further opportunity to fly e.g a sstv
module????? This would be an extra opportunity to the most excellent work
performed by ARISS and not a competitor.

Have we already missed it for Garriott - see the march 3rd deadline???? But
for the future??

I agree.

An orbiting telemetry transmitter is of little use to very few and on no use
to the majority.

I worked the pass over FM07 around 22:57 5/28. Very easy to
access and hear on my D700 mobile and duel band vertical on the roof.
Myself and 3 others had it to ourselves. That is nice for a change.

Good Morning, everyone.

Thanks Drew, et al, for once again switching on AO-51's QRP/Second Channel.

It always makes for a nice change of pace, and judging from last
night's pass over FN02, activity was quite good.

The 1.2 module must be installed by Kenwood.

I purchased my TS 2000 with the module installed and I have had no problems.

While I too like to see transponders, I do not like to see all
the negativizim, hate and rabble-rousing against those who
actually get something into space. The self-richeous nay-saying
comments are about as practical as these:

"Those HF contesters should not be using the Amateur Bands, they
should be passing useful communications or traffic!"

"Those Traffic passers are not real amateur operators, because
they will not respond with QSL's!"

"Those old fud rag chewers on HF think they own the frequency.
They should let others use the frequency for more useful
communications"

"Those FM commuters are just wasting air time, saying the same
old thing every day. Why don't they just use a cell phone!"

"Those AM guys are just wasting 6 KHz of spectrum, they should
be made illegal on the amateur bands"

"Who wants to look at all those SSTV pictures, Its just the
same old post-card! They should not be using 3 KHz of bandwidth
for such stupid applications"...

"Those Winlink guys are killing amateur radio by turning the
bands into an automatic communications system."

"Those Echolink and IRLP links are bad for ham radio. Why don't
they just use HF or a phone if they want to talk to someone far
away."

"Those Radio control Airplanes operating on the Amateur band
should never be there, they are not communications".

"Those experimental Balloons just transmit pictures and
telemetry, without a transponder, they have no purpose in
Amateur Radio"

And on and on...

Face, it.. Ham radio is as rich in applications as there are
innovative and resourceful people. If you want something done,
then go do it. If you don't like what others are doing with
their hobby, then get out of the way.

Public negativizim and constant complaining never accomplishes
anything except darken our collective hobby. Save that for the
politicians who are supposed to respond to their constituents.
For a hobby that is just the collective "us" with each licensed
individual having the same equal opportunities as everyone else,
complaining about what others do is just pointless.

Seems that IF only a transmitter was included then you must not have
taken enough interest in seeing that more was included. Next time, you
should be willing to step up and ensure that a transceiver operation is
include. Try addressing the issue before the satellite leaves the launch
pad. If you still have no results, then you have a platform to complain
from.

I'm also a bit concerned regarding the comment about "our frequencies".
Most of these satellites appear to be operating in the UHF spectrum
which amateur radio is not the primary or only group with allocations.

There seems to be a proliferation of satellites using the Amateur
bands as cheap down link frequencies, and using Radio Amateurs as a
cheap way of collecting their data. It is MY personal belief that a
satellite should only use our hard-earned and much coveted
frequencies if they REALLY do carry an Amateur Radio payload... I.E.
a Transponder! , or, at the end of their commercial life, should be
put to real amateur use, I.E. a Transponder, promised several times
but not often delivered.

OK there are many out there who get satisfaction from getting signals
from anything that is orbiting, to them, I raise my hat
BUT.. if it is in an amateur band, it should be a REAL amateur
satellite.

This is my view, and I stand here to be shot down.....

Well said Ken! Grumping about after the fact serves no useful purpose, and
some of the comments I've seen seem very selfish and "me first". While it
would be nice to have an open two-way package on RS-30, the designers and
builders of that satellite in reality owe us nothing.

Perhaps an interested group could offer to build or sponsor a transponder on
the _next_ launch to that orbit?

Hello John. I hadn't been on the FM sats in a very
long time but picked last night to jump on after
hearing about the second repeater. It was a very
orderly group totally devoid of the chaos I had
remembered from years past. It was a totally
enjoyable experience. I got my 2 Q's and let other
have at it. I later heard KC8RAN, KC2LRC, W4HIJ and
KB2HSH. My thanks to Jay AA4FL and Drew KO4MA for my
contacts. The 2nd repeater worked very well indeed.
