It came to my attention that despite me thinking it, I never wrote one
of my steps down, so please add "2a. University coordinates satellite
frequencies with IARU" :)

Complaining about uncoordinated satellites is a valid discussion topic,
~ but people should focus more on fixing the problem rather then
bellyaching about it. :)

Actually, that might not be true. Apparently the control team tested
the transponder on Delfi C3 recently. I'm not sure if that meant they
made an actual QSO with two stations, or just listened to their own
uplink. In either case, it seems pretty certain we'll have cubesat
QSOs in a matter of weeks.

Fair enough. But Cubesats offer a real opportunity for a far smaller
group of people from all classes to build and launch an amateur
communication satellite, too. Our critical problem, as I see it, is
that in NA and EU there are no free or deeply-discounted rides as
there were in the earlier times. Cubesats seem to offer launches
regularly because they aren't relying on the freebie system, but just
on really small, light objects costing a whole lot less to launch.

Dom, judging by the discussion on the irc chat after a cubesat launch,
my contribution will always be valued. Honestly, you'd find it a real
hoot to be part of that whole process. I was so chuffed to hear Defl
C3 booming into my station, about three S-units over VO-52. And, for a
project like Delfi C3, where the more data, the better, an extensive
network like we amateurs offer is a goldmine, never replaced by a
handful of university sites.

Of the satellites listed (according to the list posted at
http://www.amsat.org.uk/iaru/finished.asp), the following satellites
have been coordinated with IARU for use of the amateur satellite spectrum:

* Swisscube: Space Center, Ecole Polytechnique F?d?rale de Laus
* Goliat: University of Bucharest
* UWE-2 (but not yet UWE-3): University of Wuerzburg

Unisat3 from Rome was launched with AO-51, however the UniCubesat is not
listed with the IARU.

It appears that the IARU Coordination group knows nothing about the
other satellites listed in the press release. But then, it also appears
that the recent Russian RS-30 "Jubilee" was apparently
unknown/uncoordinated.

If any of you are in contact with any of these groups, please stress to
them the need for coordination with the rest of the amateur
radio/amateur satellite community. Information of the coordination
process, along with some recommendations (including a very useful link
budget spreadsheet from Jan King W3GEY/VK4GEY) can be found at
http://www.iaru.org/satellite/.

I have just received my assembled LVB Tracker box from AMSAT.

I would like to control it using my iMac and MacDoppler.

I have downloaded the instructions from LVBTracker.com

When I turn on the LVBTracker the indicator says I have v0.7, then it
says "Warning bad EEPROM data." prior to displaying the az/el data.
Should I worry about this or should I simply ignore it? Do I need to
install different firmware?

I have attempted to calibrate the Trackerbox and have managed it a
couple of times, however it doesn't seem to want to retain the
azimuth information once I have turned it off and back on again. Any
suggestions?

(The LVBTracker has both a USB and a DB-9 socket on the back, do I
need to open things up and select one or another? )

I have downloaded the FTDIUSBSerialDriver file. It will only install
on the main "Macintosh HD" level, and does not allow me to select
another location during the installation. I am not familiar with the
Mac OS, do the drivers need to be moved to a particular file?

The instructions suggest that I "... talk to the LVBTracker using a
terminal program ..." Suggesting that I "Setup (via the terminal
program) the COM port selected for the FTDI USB device, 9600, N, 8,
1" How do I perform this "setup"? How do I select a COM port via
the terminal program on a Mac? (I have done this on a PC for a COM
port, but I have no idea how to do it via a USB port on the Mac.)
Any suggestions?

The instructions say that "All the tracking programs ... have good
instructions for setting up a rotor controller." I do not find this
to be true for Macdoppler, which has a minimum of instructions.
(The LVBTracker instructions mentions "Macdoppler Pro", I only have
something called "Macdoppler" do I need to upgrade to Macdoppler Pro?)

Under Macdoppler "Preferences", "Rotator", I can select my rotator,
and baud rate, but I don't know what serial port I should select. I
presume its "usbserial", but it could also be "SerialPort-1", which
is also an option. Is "usbserial" the correct serial port to
select? (I am controlling my IC-821 somewhat successfully via
Macdoppler using "usbserial" and one of the iMac's USB sockets using
a CI-V interface cable. I would like to use another USB cable for
the rotor control. Do I select "usbserial" for both? (Of course
this leaves me a little short of USB sockets, has anyone daisy-
chained the radio and rotor control via a single iMac usb jack and
one of those multi-usb boxes?)

Sorry for all the questions, but I am just about at the stage where I
go back to using my old PC and try to get things running using
SATPC32 through COM ports, but I would like to control things via the
Mac if that is possible.

Is there anyone out there who has succeeded in getting the LVBTracker
to work via Macdoppler and can help?

Thanks,

Roger VA7MG

Hi,

I am currently trying to write a program to get the Doppler shift from
SatExplorer, using the Windows Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) interface.
I'm having difficulties in understanding and programming the DDE system.

Does anyone have any source code (or a URL to one), preferably in C,
which would help to point me in the right direction? Alternatively, a
step by step description of the procedure would be very helpful.

In theory it should be a fairly straightforward task, as the information
is defined by three variables -

Application SAT_EXPLORER

Topic SAT_EXPLORER_DATA

Item SAT_EXPLORER_SERVER

Any help would be much appreciated.

Am I missing something here?

We would all like to see several transponders going up the way they
did in the 90's...myself included. But it just isn't going to happen
that way anymore.

So...a college or other group wants to launch some satellites, and ask
for our help? What's the problem?

Bill has the right attitude pertaining to these little sats...think of
them as "satellites in training". Learning the construction
principles, tracking, control from the ground, and collection of
telemetry allows for more "useful" birds to built in the future.

Now, let's all play nicely again. Have some patience...new toys WILL
be coming for us to play with.

John,

Friday afternoon I was checking some shack work, and heard an AO-16 pass.
It was on and off for several seconds at a time, mostly TLM, but someone
slipped in a quick voice call as well. At least when it was on, it was
loud. Probably testing in progress.

If their plans have not progressed too far, I wonder if we can
encourage any of these projects to use an s-band downlink. I know the
path loss needs to be compensated by a more directional antenna, and
that means pointing; and it's also the case, I believe, that the
amplifiers are not as efficient. They'd also have to take into
consideration the noise level in urban areas (though I don't think
this is yet at a level that will trouble LEO signal levels). Add to
this the fact that they'd have far fewer stations capable of receiving
the signals.

>From the perspective of the amateur service, though, having a few
university experiments making use of this band would colonize it very
nicely. And it would let us calibrate and exercise our s-band
equipment.

Yes, it is possible. Because the RF protocol of D-STAR is 4800bps GMSK (with
BT=0.5) on FM mode.

AO-16 continues to spontaneously shut off. We suspect it is a watchdog timer
that is malfunctioning, and that it is temperature related. These resets
began shortly after the satellite re-entered periods of eclipses after a
long period of full sun. Mark Hammond, N8MH, and I have, at various times,
recommanded the bird on. It will stay on for anywhere from just a few
seconds to a few minutes. We've even experimented with doing this
automatically, with not much success.

The current plan is to wait a little bit until the eclipses start getting
shorter, the overall temperature of the satellite rises some, and see if the
frequency of the resets goes down enough to make some sort of day-to-day
operation feasible again.

I can provide source code in C++.

You can also grab data using Excel of all things !!!

I nothing gets posted I'll make sure my code is on my website for you - mail

Subject: [amsat-bb] SatExplorer ... Programming DDE Interface?

With appreciation, thanks for the info on 16.

Here's hoping that 16's troubles pass...and that she will once again
be able to live again. If not, then I want to go on the record as
giving my thanks for the MANY fine QSO's (not grid square contacts)
that I have had via AO-16.

I miss coffee in the morning, with my daily N5AFV QSO!
