As an "silent" observer of AMSAT since year 2000 i always ask myself how the
every same candidates can have new and genuine thoughts and
ideas when they are coming on the board election after election? Could be if
they can tell us what where their goals and what they achieved
in their past mandate some of us can make a bit of sense of this whole affair?
Here is some questions who can be interesting to see answered
What is the state of construction of eagle?
What are the plans regarding the launch?
Who will be the launcher?
If money is missing somewhere how much is needed to have a launch?
If resources are short here in North America Is AMSAT-DL is facing the same
issues?
If there is a world-wide shortage in funding is it not logical to try to
regroup all the available funds to at least be able to achieved a
launch before a new centennial membership class is implemented?
If one university was looking for projects is AMSAT-NA is ready to send them
a wish list? or do they prefer to remain in the HAM WORLD
only business waiting for the charming Prince?
If those who wants to be elected on the board prefer to warmed up their chair
instead of answering the above mentioned questions it will be
a fair and valid reason to remain on the board but it will be nice having them
confirming this know fact. In case where our assumptions
where found not exactly representing the reality, this pre election period
will be a good opportunity to bring correction to our bad
reality evaluation.
This always said on a very positive tone.

Luc,
I agree with you and Stephan 100%...
Right along with the proposal and launch of AO-51 things changed
radically....A number of us objected, wanted the money applied to at
least a LEO with bandwidth, cw/ssb, and at that time got the only
answer that the purpose of an FM voice bird was to increase membership...
I've since asked how much good that did...and never got an answer.
Why is our membership total a secret? I suspect it has gone
down. What is the state of our finances? Are we (AMSAT-NA) on the
verge of collapse??
Will any board member come up with the answer??
I will not donate anything to some "secret society"....
I've been a member of Project Oscar since its existence, my wife,
Leanore, KA6UCD, was the editor of our "OSCAR LETTER" for many years,
and I became a member of AMSAT-NA from its existence. I've operated
every hamsat that has been launched since Oscar 7...I have over a
dozen AMSAT awards hanging on my wall, and one of the first 2
operators to attain the W4AMI 5000 verified contacts award (mailed in
6000 at the time), and have since accumulated thousands of others.
We've attended almost every convention since their inception (NOT the
last 9 or so)...We did the jewelry contest for 8 years, to interest
the wives who were not amateurs...
Now when I put AMSAT-NA down as becoming THIRD WORLD I've had some
experience....
Any answers, board????

Hey Everybody--
We heard CP4 this morning, and decoded two beacons. It's beaconing
every 5 minutes (yeah, too long period) on 437.325 MHz. Since it's
been brain dead for the past year, we would like to gather as many
beacons as we can to determine satellite health. We'll increase the
beacon rate to once per minute probably tomorrow. Just send any data
back to me.

John,
The short answer to your question is yes, adding _switchable_ CP, and
elevation capability, will make a substantial improvement in your mode VU
and UV system.
The longer answer is, well, longer. First, many people work very
successfully with linear antennas. If the satellite has CP antennas, they
are willing to eat the 3 db mismatch, or the spin modulation dropouts if it
has linear antennas. Additionally, you should have the ability to switch
between RH and LH polarization if you are going to use CP antennas. The
actual polarization can change markedly depending on the aspect of the
satellite, and the difference in signal can be many S-units.
Studies have shown that you can do well without elevation control on LEO
satellites, but you should have your antennas pointing 10-15 degrees above
the horizon. There is a good discussion here of why this works, and how to
do it: http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/rotator1.html You have plenty of
gain from the antennas you mentioned, and this is something you can try with
what you already have. Note that for higher frequencies such as mode-L and
mode-S the antenna patterns are much too sharp, and you will need a full
az-el installation.
You did not mention preamps. There is truly no installation, from the most
basic to the most sophisticated, which will not benefit greatly from a low
noise preamp. The universal and unvarying response is always "Why didn't I
do this before? Doh!" It should be remotely mounted at the tower, though
with a short run of good coax you can get by with one in the shack on 2
meters. ARR and SSB Electronics both have good units with RF switching to
prevent "oops!" incidents. (I have assumed you have quality low loss coax
such as LMR-400 or LMR-500 over a reasonably short run. If not, the mast
mounted preamp will still fix the receive problem, but your transmit power
may be badly attenuated.)
You may not agree, but I am certain you have heard the expression "Life is
too short for QRP." (Or bad wine.) Well, you can get by, but "Life is too
short to work satellites without a _good_ preamp!"
If you do the above, you may well be pleased enough you can stop here.
However, probably the next step would be a full az-el antenna mount,
followed by CP antennas if you want almost guaranteed AOS to LOS coverage,
every time.
Hope this helps, and gives you a good starting point.
Alan

From another forum - please reply directly to:

I attended a presentation by Matt Ettus, N2MJI, at the Palo Alto
Amateur Radio Association's monthly meeting about the Advanced
Communications Package. The project sounded very interesting and as I
remember, Matt said that the ACP project's goal was to send up these
amateur stations on commercial satellites in the geostationary orbit
so that it eventually, someday, gives a trans-global reach for
amateurs with portable/handheld radios. This was supposed to be an
alternative to the Eagle project.
I got talking to a friend and fellow operator who used to be very
interested in amateur satellite work and he was very interested in
knowing more about ACP.
Is there a whitepaper, wiki or some kind of documentation briefly
describing the project?
I looked at the AMSAT site and could not find much. Any pointers will
be appreciated.

The AO-51 L-band bbs uplink was turned off tonight for a day or so to aid in
some command station functions before this weekend and the V/U and L/U dual
repeater mode leading up until Field Day. Also, please remember AO-51 will
be reserved this Saturday for Kid's Day contacts, and utilizing the
alternate uplink of 145.880 and a downlink of 435.300.

Drew,
You have to forgive me since I never heard of kids day. Now that I know it is
an ARRL adventure, I realize why nothing too news on the AMSAT sites. I am
going to program my HT with the uplink and hopefully I can get a few kids on
the air that might be at the hamfest. I think an ANS bulletin could have
gotten more attention to June 21st....

Drew,
Is there a place I can get all the info for Kid's day on AO-51?? I looked
etc. and no info except that it's kid's day. If while I'm demo ing tomorrow I
can get a few kids to talk I would like to know what kid's day is all about.
Seems that no one knows what this day is supposed to be operationally except
diff freqs and easier to get a contact.
Please advise or point me to the right page...

I'm trying to switch from winaprs to UIView32. I cannot find a way to
register it. Been looking for two days now. Can someone point me in the
right direction.

The developer (Roger) passed away a couple of years ago so the original
registration process is no longer possible. Join the UI-View yahoo group
and the registration link that works is at the bottom of the page:
http://www.apritch.myby.co.uk/uiv32.htm
The only cost: a requested donation to cancer research.
