I have been off the satellites for 25 years. I just spent a bunch of money for
antennas and rotors to get back on. After listening to all of the belly aching
I wonder if I should join AMSAT (again). Maybe I should try EME . . . . the
moon will be there long after I am gone. I have listened on AO 7 and VO 52 to
test my 2 mtr yagis. I should be QRV soon. Belly aching just looks bad even if
it is warranted. I am not sure if it accomplishes much other than venting for
the vanquished. Human nature ugh. Lighten up folks.

We all can count on three things in life - death, taxes, and Luc
running a thread into the ground just to stick it to the 'man'.
It is too bad - there are some real issues to discuss.
What are we doing to volunteers to cause them to leave, or get so
overwhelmed by the job assigned to them?
Is the current EAGLE concept just too big for AMSAT to design and fund?
How much transparency does a group have to provide to its members?

How about a change in who does all the work. If AMSAT could
just get as much actual productive space-quality work out of all
the hot air complainers as they get useless naysaying, those
beleagered workers might actually be able to make some progres.
> I've been complaining about similar tactics...
> objecting mostly, to the use of FM voice vs ssb/cw.
And most people are getting tired of hearing it. Just get out
of the way. The beleagered few who are doing the work need
support not constant rock throwing...
> At this point I am not sure there are any feathers
> in the bag, mostly rocks!!
And some never resist an opportunity to throw more on their
backs...
> Try AO51, and if one tries anything other than a

In ham radio it is best to adopt the proper protocol/etiquette
on any given channel, than to forceably try to use a technique
known to be disruptive to the communications techniques already
in use.
> First time I've ever heard that on ham radio
> after being licensed for 60 years!!
Actually, back then, I thought people were more polite. Forcing
CW on voice freqs, forcing SSB on CW freqs, forcing AM on SSB
freqs, forcing contest operation on rag chew freqs and forcing
rag-chew on contest freqs are all examples of things that are
normally avoided by considerate operators. Forcing others on
AO-51 to one's own opinionated style of operating also is
probably not being considerate to others..
> Somebody do something!!
AMSAT is we. Everyone is somebody. But "doing something" does
not mean complaining about and blocking what others do. If one
is not helping, then they need to just get out of the way...
> 73, [SIGNED]
> Disagree: I learn....
> Pulling for P3E...
And apparently fighting and rock throwing against everything
else...
I believe those volunteers in AMSAT are doing the best they can,
and in ham radio it is well known that no single path will
please everyone. But for sure, they can make progress on
whatever path they are on if they are not constantly being
bombarded by rocks from the peanut gallery...

It's been going on since I got here a couple of years ago Jim. For sure,
everyone is anxious to see an HEO launched but some people feel the need to
get online and constantly whine about why we don't have one. I think there
are a few folks on here that need to get a dictionary and look up the word
"volunteer".
People better start to realize that there are no guarantees. I would say
that at the current rate of apparent progress that the AMSAT NA mission
statement looks all wet. Prospects don't seem to be much better on P3E
either. What good will it do to have a fully built satellite without the
funds to launch it?
I just try to enjoy what we've got up there and hope for the best in the
future. In the end that's all we can really do isn't it? All the whining in
the world and the backhanded comments about AO-51 and the other FM sats
aren't going to get the HEO birds up there any faster.

Right on Bob, I could not have said it better. Alltho it is the
same few that don't do anything but complain. Wonder how
much they have contributed or done to help the cause. I am
80 years old and know that ignoring them is the best way to
treat them, but sometimes they just go too far. The best to
those who are doing something to further the program of Amsat.
What other group is doing anything? 73 de Ken W7KBM.

What most HEO users never fully realized (including me) was that they were
the recipients of charity. Now that launches are commercial operations, the
AMSATs have to pay the same as everyone else and HEOs are vastly more
expensive than LEOs. The energy requirements are much larger and you can't
just use a surplus SS-18 as a launch vehicle.

All,
I have and continue to be proud of this organization. We are not a
perfect organization. Just a few volunteer. And they do the best job
that they can.
I know that I personally can only do so much. I do have a very
demanding job and a family that needs my attention. But I think that I
and the many volunteers that support the ARISS activity have done a
fantsatic job in supporting AMSAT. And amateur radio in general. We
are doing good work and share a positive attitude as we know we are
making a difference.
I KNOW that there is an active effort within AMSAT-NA to bring HEO and
LEO amateur radio satellites to fruitition. I can see it happening,
despite the negative rhetoric and severe comments that exist on this BB.
For those that are continuing to support the AMSAT mission...I tip my
hat.
I have been in the space business for 33 years. At one point in my
career I went a LONG time without launching a specific satellite. (7
years!) This happens to NASA. This happens to ESA and the other space
agencies. And this is currently happening to AMSAT. So....keep the
faith and VOLUNTEER.
For those naysayers out there....those that like to NOT volunteer and/or
enjoy throwing stones...I wish you would change your attitude. Or move
to another BB. Help, not hurt. As all I see you want to do is tear
down this organization. And I must say that it is easy to tear down an
organization. And it is very hard to build one up....to volunteer...to
make GOOD THINGS happen.
I received this URL today. Read number 16.

This hobby can continue. But only if we build it up through positive
actions. And not tear it down through venom and unkind words.
Think about it....as YOU can make that difference.

A little boy named Luc cried out again that AMSAT wasn't doing what he
wants, but didn't offer any real solutions that will work -- and the
entire mailing list looked at him together and said, "three time".

I fully expect to receive incoming slings and arrows for my input, and I do
understand for those who get their egos fed by leading/participating in the
design process for AMSAT-NA won't like this idea, but hey who is AMSAT here
to serve anyway?
Generally, the following conditions seem to exist at this time (please feel
free to correct me if any of my observations are inaccurate):
1. We don't seem to be within a stones throw of getting Eagle off the
ground
2. Engineering resources in disarray
3. No Lab
4. Most folks who participate really want to see a HEO up as soon as
humanly possible
5. The cost to put an HEO into orbit seems to be prohibitive for any single
organization to pull off without deep pocket sponsorship
6. AMSAT-DL Has an HEO that is nearing completion
Given the extent that these circumstances are close to reality, why on
earth wouldn't we consider transferring the sum total of Eagle resources
(with membership approval of course) to AMSAT-DL, for the purpose of
completing PE3?
Next step would be to determine the exact the cost and a launch
opportunity. Let the Ham Satellite Community know what those cost are and
then raise the additional funds toward that single goal.
Following the final launch and commissioning of PE3, then move on to getting
Eagle back on track.
I definitely could get behind that sort of concrete effort. What we have
now seems to be a bit of a distant dream.
Regards,
- Joe, K7ZT
