Hi David and Ib,
Delfi transponder was operating over ZL on the 2132 UT pass a short while
ago.
Started with a 6.3kHz offset (Satellite input on 435.5495MHz, Output on
145.9068MHz). This drifted down to about a 6kHz offset at the end of the
pass.
Good beacon signals until Delfi was about 61 deg S when it sounded as
though it was FMing and the note became rough for about 2 minutes.
Little or no signal back from the transponder.
It recovered before LOS a few minutes later.
Note that Delfi has been in full sun for more than half its orbit before it
hits ZL and progressively loses the sun before going into eclipse South of
ZL so the above may not represent what happens as Delfi comes out of eclipse
in the Northern hemisphere.
All very interesting. Still no one to talk to in this part of the world.
"Heard in VK" is the best so far. Next pass is 4 Deg low to West (over VK)
so perhaps this time if the transponder is still on.

Hi Alan / Ib
I never thought I would say this.....but part of the answer is on you tube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYcl48K5qBE
If you watch the video carefully, then you can see with a little stopping
and starting the two frequencies on their radio when they were testing the
transponder. It's about 1min 20sec into the video.
145.9005 = 435.5512
So that would seem consistent with Alan's observation and equating to a
nominal clean room temperature. However, certainly seems to be that an
offset has been there from the moment the transponder was finished.
Thanks
David

Hi all,
On the one good pass over ZL so far I had to use a +6kHz offset on my uplink

i.e. satellite input frequency of 535.556 (nominal 435.550) to hit the
145.900 satellite output frequency.

The 910 needs to put in "satellite" mode before you enable WispDDE.
WispDDE *WILL* send a message about "unable to cancel split mode" before it
works properly.
WispDDE will *NOT* work properly if the 910 is *NOT* in satellite mode.
WispDDE will switch bands and modes properly only if the 910 is in satellite
mode.
The inability of WispDDE to recognise VFO changes is because "Bidirectional
Interface" is turned off. You may also have an old version of WispDDE which
did
not support "transparent tuning" - I'll send you the most recent build that
does
support it, in a separate email.
I use Orbitron and WispDDE for my 910 and it works well for me on all the
satellites I use.
Feel free to ask me any questions about the 910 with WispDDE
regards
Tim

Hi Keith, N4ZQ
I agree with you, however how can we prevent somebody to use the Satellite
into Eclipse?
Fortunately, the Satellite comes into Eclipse over populated areas -like
Europe- before and after the midnight, so the traffic is minimal. That's
good !
On the other hand, there are several areas where the Satellite has a
terrible "jamming" on the Uplink, in the middle of the night.
I have observed that, over M.East and W.Asia sometimes the Satellite is
fully noisy, FMing too.
Probably because the Satellite subzone between 145.8-146 MHZ is fully
occupied by pirates, old VHF wireless phones etc.
So, even without Ham-users, sometimes the satellite is fully overloaded.
That is very bad in case where the Satellite is into Eclipse but, definitely
we can not much to do in order to prevent that.
As I remember, this Satellite has a function for electric management
(UVC),
in order to "Turn-ON" automatically the transponder, when came on Sunlight .
Unfortunately, on UVC appeared a malfunction (AT) April'07.
Normally, if the batteries are discharged and the satellite comes into
Eclipse, the transmitter is turned OFF by the UVC. It is designed so that
later
an analog system transmitter becomes ON automatically when the terminal
voltages of the battery exceed a set value after the power is available from
the Solar Panels.
However, it appears likely that a malfunction occurs for this function,
and the
terminal voltage cannot turn-ON the transmitter even if it exceeds the set
value - unless commanded from the JARL's ground station.
Therefore, without UVC-function and by carrying 12 years old Batteries,
the Satellite is "naked".
Even without traffic from Ham-operators during the Eclipse, it is not
sure if that prolongs the FO-29's life.

Very Interesting Data you collected, Mak. Maybe it should be suggested
that if FO-29 is in eclipse, that it shouldn't be used. That might prolong
it's life. What do you think ?

Hi Domenico, i8CVS
last night I collected the Telemetry from FO-29.
Date 27 July 2008, Orbit #58990. AOS 21:27, TCA 21:34, LOS 21:41.
It is very interesting to point out that, the most part of TLM collected
into Eclipe !
If I am not wrong, just the "Data1" is on Sunlight and the rest DATA on
Eclipse.
At 21:32 the FO-29 came on the dark, 2 minutes before the TCA.
The confirming of Sunlight on "Data1" is obvious also by Solar-Panel Current
(= 1000.0 mA).
Also the battery has the biggest Voltage (16.4 ). In the next "Data 2,3,4,
5 & 6" where the FO-20
was on Eclipse, the Solar-Panel Current is just 9.8 mA.
However, the battery voltage is droped down from 16.4 V (Data1 on
Sunlight)
to 14.2 V (Data 6 on Eclipse). That means 2.2 Volts lower in about 5 mins.
I can't say if that is normal or not. It's just my notice and probably is
OK that but,
it should be very interesting if we can find an older TLM-Data into Eclipse
in order
to compare it with this one.
Finally, the following data are 100% OK. As you know dr Domenico, I am
"old fashion"
CW operator by using pencil and paper, however I recorded my reception
and I confirmed
it twice, in order to eliminate any possible fault.
Here is the collected Telemetry DATA:

AO-51 is in dual V/U mode for the remainder of the week, both repeaters are
running about 400 mW each. This provides a very good downlink signal.

hi folks, I was just reading the 2003 arrl handbook and they say these data
sats are operational.
ao-16
lo-19
io-26
fo-29
uo-11
uo-22
go-32
mo-46
ao-40
are any of these sats really operational via data?
could they all be non-operational by now?
will go look myself on the amsat web site to see if any of them or all of
them are listed as operational.
sure be nice to have a data sat we can work.

Does anyone know if they actually "fixed" something on the satellite (re-
configured or something), or if simply giving it some time off to rest was all
it took? My understanding was that the batteries were pretty much shot, and
that there was a problem in the charge regulator that prevented it from
recovering on its own.
Do we need to go easy on it, for example, sticking to daylight passes only?
It's one of the best birds up there, and I'd hate to lose it again!

Hi Alan / Ib
That it is still operational over ZL after half an orbit is very
encouraging. Perhaps we have seen the last of the 'feature' of turning off
shortly
after coming out of eclipse. As the team predicted.
At Surrey the team announced the Delfi N3XT project (pronounced 'next').
The satellite will be a 3cube design but with bigger panels and 3 axis
stabilization and a power budget much greater than DO-64. They are looking
for ideas
to put on the mission to give some amateur radio functionality in addition to
the science they have planned. V down link and U uplink will be used for
communications. I wonder if 'we' could suggest something in addition to the
obvious transponder. - September deadline for the mission plan. Perhaps the
BB
could come up with a list of suggestions.
Perhaps with 3 axis control, a small camera with an image to slowscan
converter would be good. - Then the team can use it to confirm the pointing
accuracy of the satellite and potentially use the GENSO network to issue a
'take
picture' command.
Thanks
David

Hi all,
please find below the latest status update of the Delfi-C3 / DO-64 satellite
1. We have concluded the first three months of science mission with
great success. A big word of thanks to all amateur radio operators
around the world for collecting and forwarding telemetry, sending
reception reports and observations, and thanks for all the tremendous
support we have received. As of today, we have collected 396564 AX.25
frames through the worldwide network... a truly amazing number. Thank
you all so much.
2. Delfi-C3 has been switched to permanent transpondermode during the
10:00 UTC pass today (July 29th) over the Delfi-C3 groundstation in
The Netherlands. This means that the spacecraft now boots in
transpondermode as soon as the spacecraft exits eclipse. This was
verified by a successful OBC database dump shortly after that.
3. We plan to switch the satellite back into either basic or science
mode, approx. once every 2 weeks for short times during passes over
our groundstation for housekeeping purposes. During these passes
either the 145.870MHz or 145.930MHz downlink will be on transmitting
1200Bd BPSK, and the transponder will then be off. We would like to
encourage everyone to forward telemetry using RASCAL in the usual way
during these passes. Longer periods of BPSK telemetry will be
announced on the BB.
4. Reports have indicated a slight frequency offset of the
transponder, i.e. an uplink of 435.556MHz corresponds to 145.900MHz in
the downlink passband. This was actually known before launch, and is
caused by a slight frequency offset in one of the spacecraft's local
oscillators. The video on YouTube is a video from the first
transponder contact using our "flatsat" transponder prototype in early
2007, which is not the same as the flight model. However, the flatsat
prototype also showed a slight frequency offset, as G0MRF pointed out.
5. The transponder mode beacon is at 145.870MHz, approx 10dB below
PEP, transmitting a CW beacon message, followed by a commemorative
Sputnik message consisting of 6 dits. Actually, the CW beacon is
transmitted using Double Sideband, there are two CW carriers 1200Hz
apart. (Guess where that number comes from hi:)
6. Reports on the transponder's operation are more than welcome,
either on the BB (which is read by us on a daily basis) or directly to
info at delfic3.nl
Having said all this, the team is happy to open the transponder for
use, and wishes you good DX. Enjoy!
73 on behalf of the Delfi-C3 team,
Wouter Jan Ubbels PE4WJ
