Some Web sites state that OSCAR is an acronym for "Orbital Satellite
Carrying Amateur Radio."

Or is it "Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio?"

This is actually more important than it sounds...(grin)

According to the 20 plus locations I just googled, it is-
"Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio"
This is what I also remember it being called.

The AMSAT glossary lists it as "Orbiting".
The "Space Today" history of Amateur satellites lists
it as "Orbital".

Why do we call our satellites OSCAR? Because the first four Amateur
Radio satellite projects that flew in 1961-1965 were managed by
pioneering hams in a US West Coast group known as Project OSCAR--an
acronym that stands for Orbital Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio.
AMSAT, the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation, was formed in 1969, by
an East Coast group wanting to build and fly hamsats.

but so were ashes of 208 people...including "Scotty" of Star Trek

Hello all
I have a couple of questions of some things I am working on-
Has anyone used that expanding foam that you use for filling holes and gaps in
walls etc. I am trying to use it for helix support inside some PVC pipe for a
2.4Ghz 6 turn helix. Once expanded it provides a rigid support for the coil.
It stays cool in a microwave oven. I have no idea what if any the properties
are regarding microwave applications. As with most of my efforts I just build
and try.

Next question- which probably would be more aimed at a EME bb. I have a 12
foot TVRO I am building a patch feed for 1296, and feed it through 50 feet of
LMR400 to my IC-1271A. I want to see if I am able to "hear" EME signals. Of
course if I am able to, you can guess what my next effort will be. This will
be a cheapie effort as I am only using stuff I already have. I do have a
KJ6KO L band 70 watt amp.

I have only ever heard the acronym explained as Orbiting Satellite Carrying
Amateur Radio.

I didn't think satellites actually earned "OSCAR" status until they officially
reached orbit and, thus WERE orbiting.

Please correct me if that's not accurate.

The OLDER the printed article, the more likely it states, 'Orbital.'

Of the several pre-1990 articles I have found, the vast majority use
'Orbital.'

Hi all,

I'd like to hear from anyone who has reference locked the LO of their 910.

I know of Rex, VK7MO who built his own VCXO and locked that with a ReflockII
and
used it to lock his 910 but I was wondering if anyone else has done this and
how
you achieved it.

http://home.exetel.com.au/dwsmith/riglock/VK7MO_GPS_Locking_the_IC%20910-H.pdf

Off-the-shelf solutions would be good since my "go build it" time is very
limited but that doesn't mean I wont build a solution :)

thanks

Tim

Fred Hicks, W6EJU, didn?t have a rocket, but he did have the
requisite enthusiasm and, having worked for a missile contractor
and witnessing six satellite launches, some background in the
field. He contacted Stoner and the dream began to be take shape.
Hicks eventually became chairman of the Project OSCAR?Orbital
Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio?Association located in
California, and Stoner wrote the first major article about amateur
satellites, published in the February 1961 issue of QST. ?Be assured,?
he wrote, ?that this is not an April Fool joke.?

OK...we cannot trust, necessarily, the ARTICLE you cited... But the

I'm in contact with a few folks that might be able to shed some light on
this...

I guess this is somewhat important when referring to Project OSCAR in
academic or historical media, or when referring to the proper name of
the first OSCARs, but in daily use it isn't that critical.

One of our past presidents (Ross Forbes, K6GFJ) thinks it is
"orbiting". We can ping Lance Ginner, K6GSJ as well.

In addition, we have a lot of old archive materials, plus our IRS
paperwork, which might be helpful.

The January 1962 issue of CQ announced the launch of OSCAR (later called
OSCAR 1) and says Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio. However, page
32 of the February 1962 issue shows a image of a "Father's List," with OSCAR
Logo saying Orbital Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio. The list was flown
onboard the satellite. So, with the letterhead on the satellite, I tend to
accept Orbital Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio.

Hi Bob,

Interesting idea. I think that the foam insulation, even though it doesn't
absorb microwave energy, will alter the electrical characteristics of the
helix. So, the dimensions - the diameter and/or the turn pitch - will need to
be changed. It certainly would make for a durable antenna, however.

Good luck,

Greg KO6TH
