All,
During the entire pass (max 72 degrees elevation) I have
submitted the commands (mostly only the first one, a few
times all four of them shortly after eachother).
However, I have not heared a single tone on the downlink
so we must assume this attempt failed.

I tried a few hours ago when it came over eastern usa, only an 34
elevation pass for me though.
Got the same results.

I have monitored the last 2 good passes and heard nothing on the downlink
frequency.
Was hoping that someone might get through with the commands.
Hope everyone keeps trying

You are right that there is no button, and it does not seem to "inherit" the

Mike,
I have just sent the tone sequences to compass and received a very short
beep tone immediately after each command on the downlink. The tone has a
slight change of pitch for its duration. The equipment used was a TS-2000
with the tones in memory and the tone duration set to "SLOW" (100ms tone,
100ms mute).
Compass pass at 2102 UT and max el 54 deg.

Hi all,
The recent events are dramatically. Our two ground stations are almost
inoperable.
A few days ago however, a hard-reset of the satellite had occurred, which
brought the satellite back into the following vicious circle: Once the
heater is being switched on, the battery power drops drastically, which
causes another hard-reset. This goes on and on. The only chance to recover
the satellite is to avoid the activation of the heater. This can be done by
adjusting threshold values.
Since these values are reset after each hard-reset, we would need to send
them again and again, until the satellite is in a stable condition
(batteries charging), where no reset occurs.
Thus, if you would like to support this recovery phase and have the right
equipment to do so, please upload the following DTMF tones to COMPASS-1
(simply from loudspeaker via microphone)
THRESHOLD ADJUSTMENT (to do after every hard reset)
****14#200# heater off to -55 degr THIS
IS THE VERY IMPORTANT COMMAND
****13#200# heater on to -55 degr
****16#170# critical batt threshold to 3.3V
****15#255# low batt threshold to max -> charge batteries
The commands consist of 4 stars, two numbers, a hash, 3 numbers, and a hash.
If COMPASS receive this sequence successfully you can hear a short
confirmation beep.

Hi Alan,
great - that sounds very good :-)
This is a good sign, that the batteries are not dead and the voltage is
around 3.2 volt.
So we can only wait to the next passes. Maybe the battery voltage is
increased and the beacon on. Could you please continue trying to send the
codes?
I think we have only a good chance if COMPASS is in full sunlight.
Thanks again and best 73,
Mike

HI,
"The fault lies in thyself", was uttered many moons ago but that quote now
applies to me! In summary I could not get my SSB 70cm preamp to work with
my Icom 910; Jerry of SSB gave me terrific support to try get it working,
and found it hard to believe that the relays engaged and it did not
function. He said in 15 years not one was DOA, and said the only conclusion
was that it was connected to the wrong antenna. I did the system checks
that were suggested by this BB and still no joy. Convinced that the unit
had a problem I sent the SSB Preamp back to Larry, no surprise it checked
out fine; guess what the coax was put to the wrong antenna upon
installation. I'm the "village idiot"! I want to thank all those that
responded, this BB is a terrific asset to anyone interested in getting help
with Satellite activity, thank you and my sincere apologies for taking up
the bandwidth an so much of Jerry's valuable time.

Hello All,
It appears that the 7806 voltage regulator in my Yaesu G-5500 control box has
gone bad; the output is measuring more like 10.8 Volts (!). This explains
why both position indicators were off by a factor of 2 (e.g., elevation meter
showing 90 deg, array pointing 45; azimuth meter showing 180 deg, but array
pointing 90 deg., and so on).
Question---has anybody used a 7805 to replace the 7806 regulator in this
control box?
I don't have a 7806....so this brings the next question--anybody have a 7806
(or 2) that they want to sell?)
Thanks,

Hi my friend Nader, ST2NH
If the rotor works I don't think that preventional maintenance is actually
strictly necessary.

Okay, thanks to all for the quick suggestions!!
I forgot about the trick of using a diode (or two) on the ground leg of the
regulator as a means to increase the regulated voltage. Another good
suggesion was to use a LM-317 and adjust it as needed.
Other info: I found inexpensive 7806 devices with LOW shipping (via US Post)
at Parts-Express.com, so I should have some arrive here in a few days.
Again, thanks to all for the suggestions and help!

COMPASS-1 CubeSat in Emergency Mode - Telemetry Reports Needed
AMSAT News Service Bulletin 230.03

Since Sunday, the COMPASS-1 CubeSat has been in emergency mode. The
battery voltage is very low and the satellite is rebooting every
pass. The CW beacon is on in sunlight - but it only transmits on
8 minute intervals.
A hard-reset of the satellite has occurred, which brought the satel-
lite back into a vicious circle: Once the heater is being switched on,
the battery power drops drastically, which causes another hard-reset.
This goes on and on. The only chance to recover the satellite is to
avoid the activation of the heater. This can be done by adjusting
threshold values.
The COMPASS team needs as much telemetry as possible. Amateur radio
stations around the world are asked to listen to the COMPASS down-
link on 437.275 MHz. Any reports will be appreciated. You can find
a simple CW telemetry decoder at: http://www.dk3wn.info/software.shtml.
MP3 or WAV files would also provide useful information.
Please send your reports to compass1cubesat(AT)googlemail.com.

AMSAT Headquarters received the news below. Martha said, "It is
with great sadness that I report the death of Howard Ziserman, WA3GOV
at the age of 55."
For many years, Howard served as the Area Coordinator for MD & VA.
He volunteered for EVERY hamfest in this area, sometimes traveling
over 100 miles away.
He had a love for the Space Program working at the NASA Bioprocessing
and Pharmaceutical Research Center in Philadelphia in the early 80's.
When he moved to MD in 1989,he combined his love of education and
space working on Space Shuttle Mission STS-94 and later on the ARISS
program.
Howard had a B.A. from Cornell, a B.E. in EE from Johns Hopkins, an
M.S. in Chemistry from U of MD. His dream was to get his PhD and so
he left MD in 2001 for Kansas City. There he received his PhD in
December of 2006

1. School Contacts
An ARISS contact was held the with Town of Berkeley Heights, New
Jersey, Summer Playground Camp on Wednesday, August 13. The New
Providence Amateur Radio Club has been involved with this camp for
the last four years. It has provided an introduction to ham radio
on the air by setting up HF and VHF stations and having the campers
communicate with hams around the world. The ARISS contact will be
an extension of this activity.
An ARISS contact has been slated for Thursday, August 21 at 14:55 UTC
with Los Padres Council Troop 105 in Santa Barbara, California. Boy
Scouts, ages 12-17 will work on their Astronomy, Space Exploration and
Radio Merit Badges. Cub Scout units will have materials available to
work on the Astronomy and Science belt loops and Astronomy and Science
academic pins. The University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB)
Physics Department will make available its astronomy observation deck
for the contact and will provide faculty members to instruct the Scouts.
The Scouts will be presented with information on the ISS and its crew
to prepare them for this activity and the media will be notified.
2. Training Session Contact Scheduled
A simulated ARISS contact has been scheduled for Tuesday, August 12 at
approximately 14:00 UTC between ESA astronaut Andre Kuipers, PI9ISS,
and youth attending the European Space Camp (ESC) in Belgium. This
training session is a terrestrial-based amateur radio contact using
ARISS-equivalent equipment. EchoLink and IRLP coverage is expected.
3. Terrestrial Contacts Successful
Two simulated ARISS contacts were scheduled for Tuesday, August 5
between U.S. deployed soldier dependents visiting the European
Space Center (ESC) in Belgium and astronauts Koichi Wakata, KC5ZTA
and Soichi Noguchi, KD5TVP. The NASA Johnson Space Center was closed
due to tropical storm Eduardo which caused the training sessions to
be cancelled. Astronaut Mike Fincke, KE5AIT, stepped in to speak with
the youth and answered one question from each of the thirty students.
Audio will be posted on the ARISS-Europe Web site when available.
