I bought a used G5500 rotor that the previous owner had stored in a closet for
several years and hooked up the power. The azimuth rotor is functioning as
specified but the elevation side has a problem. When pressing either the up
or down switches on the controller, I hear a hum from the rotor, indicating it
is getting power, but nothing moves. Where should I start looking?

Hi all,
Just for interest, AO-07 switched from mode A to mode B at 2050 UT today.
(Cut me off in the middle of calling CQ on mode A so I went to mode B and
worked VK2MAL and VK2AYE who had just heard it come up.)

Jim,
First thing to do is swap the connectors between the rotators and see if the
problem follows the rotator. The controllers are essentially identical,
except for the meter scales. That test will eliminate anything external to
the rotators.
If the problem does follow the rotator, check the DC continuity of the 3
motor leads. That should be the bottom 3 screws on the controller. Expect
to see about 5 ohms or so with the wires disconnected from the controller.
If that is good, then it is _probably_ the phase shift capacitor. With that
open, the motor will hum, and may even move a bit with no load, but will
have little or no torque. Unfortunately the capacitor is inside the
elevation rotator. Replacing it is straight forward, but tedious, and
messy. Been there, done that, last month.
Good luck,
Alan

Hi again Mike,
In my rush to get the beacon info off to you I left out another interesting
bit of info. Prior to the normal telemetry frame I received the following:
00DP0COM-COMPASS-1-012345-COMPASS-1
This was 38 seconds after I sent the beacon test command.

I am going on a trip that will pass through some rare grids. It is not a
grid expedition and the main purpose is work related travel. The person I
am traveling with has agreed to a few "rest stops" for me, my hand-held and
arrow antenna. I cannot guarantee exactly when I will be in which grid, but
I will leave Watertown, SD Sunday, August 24th around 6:00 AM.
My trip will take me through the following grids EN-15, EN-05, DN-95, DN-85,
DN-86, DN-76, DN-66, DN-65, DN-55. I will cover the same ground in the
other direction August 29 or 30th.
Please listen for me on AO-51, SO-50, and AO-27. I don't expect to make
every pass, but I hope to get quite a few of them.
73,
Joe
kk0sd
P.S. If you really need EN-15 or EN-05 they are not that far from my home
and I would be willing to do a sked.
