We're probably looking at Saturday or Sunday for a technology preview.

Currently I'm adding dual radio support - radio 1 used for RX, radio 2 used
for TX. For example 2 x FT-857 or whatever you have in the shack.

Next week is 'add all rotators' week.

This evening - two episodes of Dr. House on Swiss TV :-)

Hi Mike,

Sent commands at 1006 UT at 8 deg el. on the eclipse pass last night and the
first three were acknowledged (14, 13, 16) but no further commands were
accepted. Tried again at higher elevations later in the pass but no
response.

First pass this morning (4.5 deg max el) all commands except the test beacon
command were acknowledged. No beacon heard but pass very short.

Hi Mike and Robert,

All commands sent and accepted at 2102 UT.
A test beacon was received 5min and 40 seconds after the test beacon
command.
A normal beacon began 3min and 40 seconds later but unfortunately Compass
was at zero deg elevation when the beacon began. I have a -1 deg horizon in
this direction so managed to get part of the frame as follows:
FF18090011710020........(LOS). The 11 in the middle was very noisy but
almost certain they are OK (Definitely 1 or 0) and just managed to confirm
that the heater was off before it went into the noise!

At least the system is up and running - good signal strength from the test
beacon.

Good Day Everyone,
For those of you that usually check into the Florida AMSAT Net at 19:30 ET
on Thursdays through the N4HHA repeater in Orlando, the repeater has a new
controller installed and appears to be working fine.
I haven't had a chance to speak with Mike about it, but I believe it is
capable of linking to the NI4CE repeater system as usual, so tonight's net
should go off without a hitch.
I won't be net control tonight due to water in my coax from Fay and a very
high SWR. I be present using a weak indoor antenna just to check in. K4ACB has
agreed to handle it tonight.

See you on the net,

Dave, AA4KN

These is my personal observations about DO-64.

The descending (morning) passes seem to be LHCP. My down link antenna is
fixed LCHP only, and I hear the descending passes really well and can access
DO-64 easily even at low elevations.

Above 45 degrees, DO-64 is loud and I can back off power < 5 watts CW. Up
link antenna is a 11 turn helix RHCP.

The ascending (evening) passes are very weak. Probably RHCP as I am fixed
LHCP. At this time, DO-64 is not in sunlight on the ascending (evening) passes
over the central U.S.

The beacon at 145.870 is easily heard. When you hear the beacon, you can put
a signal through the transponder.

435.556 MHz up puts you real close to the center of the 40KHz wide
transponder and 145.900 MHz down.

DO-64 does not have the booming signal as VO-52. I think I remember from the
video that the transponder output is 200 mW.

On the first half of the pass, the signals seem to be much stronger than the
second half.

It is a challenge and fun to work through this sat .

This no battery satellite is a good idea.

Many thanks,

Mike Williams

hi folks, thought i would try for compass-1. Had a good 81 degree pass my
location just now and listened and got the last of a cw beacon as I think it
goes/xmits every 8 mins. So to get a beacon is just a matter of luck if it
beacons while over head.
sounded powerfull though, will be looking for it the next pass's.

kc8gkf

p.s. had to change freq from 437.275 to 437.405 for the packet. wish they
were on the same freq.
guess I have to decide what one i want to try for.
anyone know how they xmit us the pics? or if any pics have been downloaded
as of yet?

Hy Tyler, KI4YLJ

I use a 0-360? protractor for the AZ and a 0-90? protractor for the EL
for my manual traking system used for several years in 432 MHz EME
and AO40

The moving needle in the center of the protractor is mounted on the
shaft of a Selsyn motor receiver wich is fitted in the control box while
the Selsyn motor transmitter is mechanically coupled to the moving shaft
of the antenna.

Only 5 wires are necessary to connect a Selsyn transmitter to a Selsyn
receiver.

Three wires are needed to connect in parallel S1-S2-S3 of both stators
and two wires are needed to connect in parallel R1 and R2 of both
rotors while in general a 115 volt AC 50 or 60 Hz depending on the
model is supplied to R1 and R2

Depending on the size and torque of Selsyn motors it is possible to
move a long needle for high accuracy as about 1/2 degrees as in my case
using a 15 cm long needle mounted over the shaft of a 2" Muirhead
Selsyn motors originally used to point marine guns on battle-ships
during the WWII

Using an integrated circuit AD2S80 from the Analog Device it is actually
possible to make the conversion Syncro to Digital showing the angular
position in digital form and get out as well a 0 to 5 volt DC to be used for
the automatic antenna traking with a computer and this is what I plan to do
as soon as possible.

In a separate email I will send to you some pics of my actual manual
control box showing the schematic diagram and the type of Selsyn
motors that I have used.

Selsyn motors of different type and different voltages are actually
available as new or as used at a really low cost on ebay.

Hi Jeff,

thank you for listening to COMPASS. Could you decode the beacon or did you
record it?

COMPASS is in emergency mode and the beacon is transmitting every 8..9
minutes if the voltage is higher than 2.8 volts. The RX/TX seems to work
with voltages down to 2.4 volt. This explains why COMPASS responds to
commands but no beacon sends.

If the batteries are charged and the voltage is higher than 3.7 volts (!) -
COMPASS will switch autonomous into NORMAL mode. Only in this mode the FM
transmitter (437.405MHz) is on and the satellite can send packets on
request.

To take a picture the following points must fulfilled:
- NORMAL mode
- ADCS active and in control mode - that means COMPASS is not tumbling and
stabilized,
camera is pointing to earth
- COMPASS must command to take a picture
- everyone :-) should listen to COMPASS and collect the received packets (
300 Kbyte data )
- request the missing packet frames
- compose the frames to an picture

But we are far away from this point. The first goal is - bring back COMPASS
into normal operation mode.

Thanks and 73,
Mike

location just now and listened and got the last of a cw beacon as I think it

goes/xmits every 8 mins. So to get a beacon is just a matter of luck if it
beacons while over head.
sounded powerfull though, will be looking for it the next pass's.

kc8gkf

p.s. had to change freq from 437.275 to 437.405 for the packet. wish they
were on the same freq.
guess I have to decide what one i want to try for.
anyone know how they xmit us the pics? or if any pics have been downloaded
as of yet?

I recognize the CommScope brand name in this website, and know that
lots of commercial folks use their hardline... but the other
manufacturer I don't recognize.

"True" LMR-400 is only made by Times-Microwave. There are a lot of
"copy-cats" on the market now, but little engineering data on whether
or not it performs to rated specifications.

Has anyone on the list tested any of this "400-series" type cable from
either of these two manufacturers to see if it lives up to real
LMR-400 specs?

I hate to say it, but I've been burned enough times by the old adage,
"You get what you pay for" that I'm leery of these LMR-400 "series"
copies.

LMR-400 has also been traced to PIM (passive intermod) problems on
many commercial sites when used in feeding repeaters, due to the "foil
over braid" design, and many repeater owner/operators won't use it
anymore. (Every little "bump" in the braid touching the foil is
another tiny little junction where diode-behavior can create IM mixes.)

Still good specifications for simplex services like satellite, no
doubt -- but just mentioning that it does have some limitations/
downfalls in duplex service on FM repeaters.

Hi all,

I have one day off and tried to command COMPASS in full sunlight.

The first pass (for Europe) this morning was low, only 6?. All commands were
accepted and confirmed several time by COMPASS.

At 0801UTC the beacon came with 00 compass ff0660000000002100009800ff

It shows, that the heater was still on ? in spite of confirmed commands. I
will try the next pass (nearly 90?)?

Thanks to all that i've worked, both in Europe and state-side. Not
traveling solo, it's been hard at times to be both available and have
a good horizon for trans-Altlantic passes. Half the time, no one has
been on! But they have been alot easier to work than those over Europe.
I'm experiencing lots of QRM soon after the bird goes overhead on
morning AO-51 passes and people calling CQ who can't hear the bird.
But on less busy passes, i'm making contacts and hope to talk to more
of you from mainland Scotland. Internet access has been sparse but you
can suggest a sked and i'll respond if i can. Hope to talk to more of
you, especially across the pond, from now until roughly September. 73's
and good luck!
