Hi; I have finally been able to download Winorbit . The problem is that
it has very few satellites

And a date of year 2000.

I tried to update the keps but I couldn,t get this to work.

Does anyone out there have any better luck with the program.???

You update the Keps via a "stripped" (or what AMSAT
calls a 'bare') Two Line Element (TLE) file. By
"stripped" I mean it has ONLY the TLE data, without
any other characters. Go to the AMSAT website, and
then to the "Tools" page. Go to the "Keplerian
Elements" section, and select the "Bare NASA (2-line)
format elements". On that page, in your browser, use
"Select All", and then "Copy". Open Windows Notepad,
and "Paste" the files you just copied into the Notepad
window. Save this file as "keps.tle" in the "keps"
folder of WinOrbit. The next time you start WinOrbit,
you'll see it updating the keps, *IF* you have "Enable
Automatic Updating" enabled. To enable it, open the
"Setup" tab at the top of the title bar, and select
"Misc. Settings". Make sure the box for "Enable
Automatic Updating" is checked.
I've been using WinOrbit since it I first had a
Windows PC, and it's a great little program.

Hi Domenico, Bob & all

it's a nice idea but I am thinking also that, the relay between AO-7 & FO-29
needs UHF Uplink and UHF Downlink as well !
Therefore, we need two UHF systems (TX-RX) working simultaneously
for Full-Duplex operation.
And even if the AO-7 Uplink is 3.7 MHZ lower than FO-29 downlink,
we need two antennas in the same band and probably
a repeater-style *Hi-Q duplexer* in order to avoid the desense.
Or just a UHF antenna and a circulator dr Domenico ?
Difficult components for the most of us!

However, it's a great challenge. For example (AT) 18:30 UTC the overlap took
place between
the 2 footprints over W.Asia. From E.Canada, Atlantic Ocean, Europe, Asia
upto
E.Siberia it was possible a QSO... !

Amazing distance for LEOs ! Can you imagine that ?!?!?

Yes, I know.. it's difficult, yes. But a great-great challenge for the
hibernal months !
And the AO-7 is working 24/7 for the next months - out of eclipse.
Great opportunity !

Hi Jerry,

I have used Winorbit but am not in front of that computer at the moment but
I'll try to help.

To get the new list of satellites, download new keplerian elements. AMSAT has
them:

http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/tools/keps.php

Download the .2li file.

Save it to the keps sub-directory of the directory you installed WinOrbit to.

There is a manual update and automatic. If you turn automatic on, when you
restart Winorbit it will see the new file in the keps directory and load it.
Autoupdate can be turned on under: Options:Misc Settings

The Winorbit helpfile explains this further.

Hope this helps.

Kevin

Thanks all for the mode meanings. I guess there was a transition that was
confusing me. One last question although what about a satellite that is
either duplex or simplex UHF uplink AND downlink or VHF uplink AND downlink?

Thanks

Hi Michael,

Unfortunately we have a report that the transmitters are off.

During the 7:30 EDT pass tonight I will try to turn the transmitters back on.
If I can't we will have to reload the software which will take a day two.

With the no eclipse period for the next 8 months we should be running Mode S
more often. So, you shouldn't have to wait too long to test your converter.

So if I understand this correctly, the S-band downlink is a mirror of the
UHF downlink? I've been wanting to test an S-band converter to see if I can
hear the bird. Tonight will be a good nite then to test it. Got it working
just before the final S-band pass last month, but it wasnt a good pass for me,
and I didnt hear it.

Hello John,

AO-51 was changed into mode V/SU Monday night to assist our friends at GENSO
in testing a new station setup.

You can check the current mode of AO-51 at
http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/echo/CTNews.php

We are just entering a no eclipse period and since I can't get telemetry
while in this mode, I needed to reduce the power of TXB so that the total
power was equal to the power being used by TXA and TXB just before the mode
change.

TXB is running about 380 mW, Sunday it was 600 mW. I will be switching back
to V/U analog and L/U digital mode to night on a US east coast pass.

Gould, WA4SXM

AO-51 experienced a software crash sometime August 28th between ~0900 and
~1000 UTC. The command stations have begun to reload the spacecraft
software, and one of us will let everyone know via -bb and the webpage when
the satellite is back open for general use.

How much more difficult was working two linear satellites with regard to
doppler correction, given that the satellites are moving relative to each
other as well as the operator??

Hi Mak, SV1BSX, Bob W7LRD & All

It's not a problem for me Mak because I currently use a 70 cm TX only
connected to a RHCP 10 turn Helix antenna and another different RHCP
10 turn Helix antenna connected to a 70 cm RX only and both Helices are
separated about 10 meters over the roof.

I tried to transmit to AO-7 uplink at 432.150 MHz center frequency with
about 100 watt without experiencing desensitivity at 435.850 MHz downlink
center frequency of FO-29 even using a low noise and high dinamic range
homebrewed cavity input GaAsFET preamplifier.

But at 18:30 UTC of day 28 august during the overlap the orbit of AO-7 was
ascending northbound while the orbit of FO-29 was descending soutbound so
that the relative speeds by which each satellite see at the other one add
togheter and this make the doppler shift compensation another challenge to
play with.
