Michael has discovered what many of us have been preaching for many
years. Preamps at the antenna makes a world of difference in what you hear.

But he also discovered how most preamps are blown. Its not from
leakage via the antenna but from transmitting on the coax going from
the radio to the preamp.

Solutions:
* Use coax relays to bypass around the preamp. (I am doing this
for 222 and 432 terrestrial antennas/preamps)
* Purchase a preamp designed for a transceiver (usually rated for
certain maximum power levels such as 25w or 160w, etc.).
* Modify the radio so the receiver has a separate antenna
connector. (I have this done on my FT-847)
* Use of protective devices that absorb transmit power (up to
50w, usually) and only reduce preamp gain a little bit.
So one should not be afraid to use Gasfet preamps. They are not
usually blown by signals entering the input side. However, If you
are in high lightning country you should provide for shorting the
antenna input to the preamp to avoid HV static discharge.

Always locate the preamp close to the antenna to avoid cable losses
in between the antenna and preamp that directly add to the noise
figure. Use low-loss coax in that jumper. Coax from the preamp
output to the radio may be low cost coax since the preamp gain will
usually overcome these losses.

Thanks for your experience, Michael.

Does KG7P have an email address? Worked him 2x today on SO-52, good signal
into AZ, also heard Patrick, WD9EWK, strong signal. I can get into the
sat, and can hear it, now working on coordingating tx and rx.

Thanks for the signal report! That was a 75-degree VO-52 pass
out here in DM44ha, and at times my little FT-817ND receive
radio was up to S-7 and S-8 as the satellite went by. I'm not
making lots of SSB satellite QSOs, but I am making QSOs.
Little by little, I am improving my skills in dealing with
these satellites. Still fun!

I did not see an e-mail address for KG7P in a quick search.
Not a problem here - Stan said he was going to QSL, and I
will certainly send my card his way for another VO-52 QSO
in my log.

> can get into the
> sat, and can hear it, now working on coordingating tx and rx.

Are you going with computer control, or just manually doing
that initially? Have you tried AO-7 and Delfi-C3 (DO-64), or
just VO-52 so far? I don't remember if you have preamps in
your setup - do you?

Good luck, and hope to work you on the SSB birds soon. You
can see my portable SSB satellite setup in 2 weeks, at the
upcoming ARRL Southwestern Division convention (12-14
September). I'll be on VO-52 as well as the FM birds doing
demonstrations during the convention.

One of the nice features of the old FT-780R is the switch on the back
of the rig that allows one to activate a "SAT" mode which allows one
to switch between having the transmitter changing frequency during
transmit and having it locked during transmit. This is a nice feature;
one gets the best of both worlds. I would think this would be easy to
implement in software with today's modern radios. - Duffey

It should be a standard stereo 1/8" jack (it is on my 910H)... for a
paddle, tip is dot, ring is dash, and shell is common. You have to set
"paddle" from the SSB/CW "set" mode, and you can choose normal or reverse
polarity, or "bug" mode.

I was a non believer too but preamp for VHF UHF is mandatory If you don't want
to use the sat 3 minutes only at TCA or calling CQ in the
void. When someone like you is using as much power answer you it is already
too late the pass band is close as all the other user also
cranked up their power.

BLOWN PREAMP

Who never blow his preamp please raise your hand? I blow 3 repair 1 2 to go.
But as the famous "transistor" is always hard to get! on
my icom i order 6 just in case..Even if they are protected i managed to use an
external voltage bias source who was always on when
switching between bands. I ended up with the bad combination plus a mike who
fell down just over my straight key and POOF not exactly it's
insidious when you switch back to normal you don't hear the noise increased
then you say !!!! (censored)

Here is below the solution i found. I know they are not the best for signal to
noise ratio but as the run for the curliest girl on the
dance floor syndrome the next one can also dance.

AO-51 will be unavailable for a few days beginning Tuesday morning EDT. The
command team needs to reload part of the spacecraft operating software
beginning at that time. The repeater should be back up and running within 48
hours, with the BBS following soon.

Due to the reload and the recent return to continuous illumination, we
haven't finalized a schedule for September. There have been a few special
requests, including the return of AMSAT College Night, and requests for some
L/S time. As soon as the second reload is complete, we'll have the schedule
up. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Hi all,

I will spend a fortnight at IM76QM in the west passes over Spain in the AO-51
and AO-27 sats.

My setup is an IOio antenna and a THD7 HT, I have just successfully worked
several passes. I have yesterday worked to ea8bwy/p from Canary Island, He was
working with the same setup, and IOio and 5 Watts. The AO51 let us an
impressive contact.

A comment; Google will often dig up some good stuff, but, because the way
some amateurs title their personal web pages and use descriptive text, and
googlers select search phrases, not even Google can get all the neat stuff.
I'm sure some really fine setups don't even get published to the web.

If AO-51 will be running in L/S or U/S mode more often during its full sun
period, perhaps some of the replies to Drew could be copied to this list for
everyone to tweak their systems.

Once-upon-a-time, AO-51 had experimenter's Wednesday when those who were
building their own 2.4 and 1.2 patches, helix, etc had an opportunity,
within the next week or so, to test their construction skills. I miss that,
but, with the second radio on AO-51 running less conventional modes on a
regular basis, we again have that opportunity. For me, that means I might
be able to continue tweaking my setup and install a more permanent version
on the roof before the snow flies.

Hi Drew, here is my mobile setup for AO-40 mode U/S. I?ve worked lot of
stations using this little gear:

UPLINK: Kenwood TM-455 with my comet SBB-5 dual band mobile antenna (fixed
on the roof of my car).

DOWNLINK: Kenwood TH-F7E HT with a pair of earbuds + Wimo PA-13R-20 Flat
Panel Antenna (33cm x 33cm) with a DB6NT converter.

Looking at the DS3000A from AOR USA. Wondering if it isa good
backup/permanent installation versus the portable of handheld yagis like the
Arrow.
