A discone might be OK for an uplink antenna where you can generate
higher power to make up for the poor antenna, but I would not consider
one for a downlink antenna.

I have both the M2 EB144 and EB432 for sale. They are less than a year
old and come with the radial kits. Asking $400 includes UPS shipping to
Lower 48 ONLY. Reason for sale, I am upgrading to the M2 beams for SSB
operation. US Postal Money Order or Pay Pal (you pay fees)

It looks like the temperature has come up enough on AO-16 that the watchdog
problem has gone away. I turned the satellite on this afternoon on the
~1920Z pass, collected some telemetry, and then commanded it into bent pipe
mode. On the next orbit, it was still on, and in bent pipe mode. It may or
may not stay on. The command team will monitor http://oscar.dcarr.org/ and
amsat-bb, and if the satellite goes quiet we will endeavor to restart it as
soon as possible. Occasional interruptions to gather telemetry are likely.
Just as a reminder, AO-16 now operates as a cross mode, cross band voice
repeater, with an uplink on 145.920 FM. The downlink is reduced carrier AM,
similar to double sideband, on 437.026. Most stations find receiving the
downlink on USB works best.
Work is continuing to predict how long this latest period of operation may
last, but initial estimates are around 2-3 months total, symmetric around a
period of continuous illumination in October. There may not be another
opportunity after this one, as the satellite will generally head towards
longer eclipses (and lower temperatures) for several years.

Hi Alan, WA4SCA
As a satellite operator I need to stink at sunspots and sun activity looking
periodically at the Solar Radio Flux here let say every week
http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/ftpdir/indices/DSD.txt
http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/ftpdir/latest/curind.txt
When I know the value of the Solar Flux in sfu's I can measure the Sun-Noise
received by my satellite receiving systems particularly at 2400 MHz and I
can see it the healt state of it is nominal or not.
The above procedure is particularly used by all EME'rs
Our very well calibrated signal source at no cost is the Sun
If someone is interest in the above procedure and the software to be used
please let me know.

I have an ICOM w32A in very good condition for sale. I bought it new and it
has been well cared for. Includes radio, antenna ,wall charger and manual. I
do not have the original box.
This model is the last handheld that was produced with full duplex. Great
for the sats with an Arrow.
Price is $200 (includes shipping in CONUS). Inquiries off line at N4NAB(AT)
amsat.org.

Hi all,
I cannot remember this question being discussed before!
If you have a nice array of VHF and UHF antennas - 2 stacked X 8 foot long
yagis one ach band plus a 2 foot S band dish, is it best from wind loading and
other reasons to park it:
vertically pointing straight up (the dish has a hole at the bottom)
pointing to the horizon towards the prevailing wind
somewhere else?
I know that at SSTL in Guildford they are usually parked pointing straight up
but I have never been able to find anyone with a really good explanation for
doing so.
If you look at 193.51.07.114 you can see the sort of array that I am talking
about!
Many thanks
Graham

Hi Graham, G3VZV
Pointing straight up with the main supporting boom in direction of the
dominant wind is the best because the dish will offer the minimum surface
to the wind while both yagi's are aligned in a way to be seen by the wind as
about a single antenna.
The above is my experience with less damages into the windy gulf of Naples

Hi All,
I read the last AMSAT journal and saw the very well written history of
the Eagle project in the most recent issues of AMSAT Journal. The bit
I felt was missing was the plans for the future including a plan,
schedule, and budget.
To that end I want to ask if anyone knows where one can access the
strategic plan, budget, committee assignments, and annual report?
Thanks,
Robb
