Thank you, Domenico for the information,
A lot of reading and study on this is in order. I'm probably different from
many microwave ops, as I started high and am working down in frequency, hi.
well, sort of, as I was on 1296 before I was on 10 GHz. I used the sun noise
calculations that you gave, Domenico, as referred to me by another microwave
op (for 10 GHz). Basically he directed me to a website, of which I do not
remember, but you were quite correct, I measured 5-6 dB on 10 GHz using my 60
cm offset fed dish. I am still relatively new to 10 GHz, being only active
since last summer.
Without doing a lot of study, (of which I plan to do anyway, when I get the
time to do so), you answered my question, and that is no, I will not see
enough of a change in the noise floor (when aimed at the sun) with the antenna
gain that I am using to be able to measure, however I should see an increase
in the noise floor when aiming at a warm body, ie the earth, or perhaps some
object such as a tree, building, etc.
Anyway, that's what I was looking for, a way to test what I have using simple
means (and my not having a calibrated signal source).
I HAVE checked the converters using a signal source at a friend's shack, but
the unit with the antenna attached we couldnt, of course make a meaningful
measurement. So I know the frequency is correct, not an image, and the LO is
calibrated well enough that I shouldnt have any problem finding the bird once
it comes online in mode S.
So I will consider that if I point from cold sky to earth, if I see a change
in background noise, things are probably working.

OK, sorry Drew.
For some reason I thought that the reload had been sucessful and it was
back on! I had a sked organised with Patrick, WD9EWK in Arizona this
evening and "heard" that it (AO-51) had had another software problem
earlier this morning and was off again!
Obviously not true! :-[

Both the AO-51 repeater and the BB are active again.
The software crashed during the start procedure of the PL tone task late Wed
night. The command team has reloaded the software and setup the repeater and
the BB.
We will be coming out with a schedule for September shortly.

ISS Amateur Radio Status: September 5, 2008
By Miles Mann WF1F,
Slow Scan TV from ISS planed for October 2008
MAREX-MG News www.marexmg.org
Manned Amateur Radio Experiment
Hello all, Great news.
I have recently returned from the ARISS meeting in Moscow (august 2008).
During the meeting we received detail on Richard Garriott?s upcoming mission.
Below is a joint memo from ARISS regarding Garriott?s mission.
Richard Garriott:
On Oct 12, 2008, Space flight participant Richard Garriott will launch
from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on his way to the International Space
Station. After docking with the ISS on Oct 14, he will spend 9 days
conducting experiments and doing extensive photography of the Earth.
Since he is also a licensed amateur radio operator (W5KWQ), he will be
making several school contacts, talking with operators on the ground and
transmitting Slow Scan Television images.
The standard downlink of 145.800 will be used for voice contacts, school
contacts and SSTV transmissions. Anyone with a FM receiver capable of
monitoring the 145.800 MHz downlink can receive audio and SSTV images.
The standard voice uplink frequencies of 145.200 for ITU Region 1
(Europe, Africa and Russia) and 144.490 for ITU regions 2 & 3 (N.
America, S. America, Southern Asia, Australia) will be used.
Free software to decode the SSTV image tones is available online.
Additional info on SSTV operations is available at:
http://www.marexmg.org/fileshtml/howtouseiss.html
Ground stations are encouraged to capture as many of the transmitted
SSTV images and forward them to the ARISS team at ARISS-SSTV(AT)amsat.org.
After you receive an image, please rename the images using the following
format, (All Lower case letters). All dates and times must be in UTC.
Year 08, Month 10, Day 14, (UTC time), Call sign,
(optional Short text description) .JPG
Example:
0810141905wf1f.jpg
or
0810141905wf1fgreatlakes.jpg
If you are not a licensed amateur operator, just place your initials
after the time (0607311905abc.jpg)
We would also like to know the following information in your email:
Name or Call sign
Country / State
Receiver
Software decoding tool
Elevation or range of ISS when you decoded the image.
The best image received for a given time period will be posted to
http://www.issspacecam.org/
and
www.marexmg.org
Additional information about Richard Garriott's flight and activities are
available at:

Hi!
I gave a satellite-related presentation last night for the
Yavapai Amateur Radio Club in Prescott, Arizona. The club
meeting had a good turnout, about 60 people. Even though
AO-51 was not available for a demonstration I hoped to do
before the meeting, it was still a good evening for talking
about satellites and AMSAT.
Thanks to the club for inviting me up there and for the good
time last night. Even though I returned to Phoenix much
later than I had originally planned, it was fun. And thanks
to those who were prepared to work that AO-51 pass during my
demonstration. Having some stations standing by for those
passes ensures a good show for the audience.
Have a good weekend, and 73!

ISS gets a new TM-700 transceiver and VC-H1
MAREX-MG News www.marexmg.org
Manned Amateur Radio Experiment
Hello all:
There are tentative plans to fly the backup spare Kenwood TM-700 from Russia
to the International Space Station on this months September 9th Progress-30
cargo rocket. The current Kenwood D700 on ISS has been in space since August
2003 and in Powered-On service since December 2003.
In anticipation of Garriott?s upcoming mission in October 2008, the Russian
team decided to fly the spare D700 along with a complete set of cables and
computer interface VOX box into space. In addition to the D700, there are
also plans to fly the Kenwood VC-H1 SSTV image communicator.
Disclaimer:
As with all payloads going into ISS, the priority of a project determines its
status. If another project comes along with a higher priority, it is possible
that the Amateur radio hardware can be removed from the flight manifest at any
time before launch. We will not know for sure until a few weeks after launch
if the Amateur Radio hardware was actually shipped to ISS on Progress-30.

Betreff: [amsat-bb] AO-51 is operational again
Both the AO-51 repeater and the BB are active again.
The software crashed during the start procedure of the PL tone task late Wed
night. The command team has reloaded the software and setup the repeater
and the BB.
We will be coming out with a schedule for September shortly.
73,
Gould, WA4SXM
