Good Afternoon everyone!
I wanted to be the first to thank Drew and the AO-51 Command Team in advance
for scheduling the Second Channel for September.
It is appreciated, to say the least.
That being said, according to AMSAT.org, AO-51 has the "capability" to do
PSK31:
*Mode A/U Digital: Operational* Uplink: 28.1400 MHz PSK 31 BPS
Downlink 435.3000
MHz FM 31 BPS
Has this ever been activated? If it is possible, how has it worked out
before?
Thanks again!

Hi John,
We have tried the PSK 31 mode A/U before without much success.
If you have the AO-51 book, there is a screenshot of PSK-31 in operation on
page 34. The major problem is that the 10M uplink has to be received with
the 2M whip antenna, not a great match. The signal strengths were low and
it didn't prove to be very popular.

Gould, WA4SXM

Perry;
I have had recent experience with ATT DSL. About 8 months ago My wife decided
to change our COMCAST cable service to an ATT DSL/DishNetwork bundle. (She did
this w/out consulting me!) She was assured by ATT that the DSL service would
provide the same or better than 6 gig service we were enjoying (trouble free)
from Comcast. In fact ATT made a big point that using a cable modem we were
sharing bandwidth (you still do with DSL upstream of the DSLAM).
Truth be told, ATT could not deliver 6 gig service to our home 15,000 feet
from the DSLAM. The copper network is very old and deteriorated. In fact after
having troubles: 1) they wanted to downgrade the GOS, 2) They no longer
offered the 6 gig GOS to my block. I also spent a lot of time rewiring the
phones in the house to deal with DSL filtering issues.
ATT's real reason to market the DSL/Dishnetwork bundle is to pull customers
from the local cable service in anticipation of their fiber to home video
service that they are slowly rolling out. I would avoid ATT DSL unless you
have a DSLAM in your neighborhood and you have neighbors who are satisfied
with the service. Otherwise, steer clear. Also the DishNetwork service has
been a bit troublesome in performance and HD channel packages. So now I am
back with Comcast for internet and stuck with Dishnetwork HDTV for 10 more
months.
Also ATT has blocked usenet binaries groups so if you were getting manuals,
files and schematics from ABSE or similar newsgroups, you are out of business.
Has anyone on the BBS had any experience with AT&T's DSL Internet
service????
I will be using a Apple IMac computer and the people here in town
don't seem to know anything about a Mac computer.
I would also like to know if upgrading to DSL will cause any
interference on my TS2000????

As of the 2010z pass, it sounds like AO-16 is off again.

I have had ATT DSL for several years here in the OC. I pay the minimum $20/mo
and average around 1.5mbps down, 700kbps up- faster than they advertise. I
run it through a wired/wireless router. No issues with filtering. I have a
TS 2000. no issues at all. They are just starting to advertise faster
options but this seems fine for what I do (I don't download blu-ray movies
LOL). Best deal around.

It sounds to me as though the relative age of the equipment in a given service
may significantly impact the quality of service subscribers receive.
My experience here, pre-ATT bundle, was with Charter Communications. After
taking a job that provided me the chance to work from a home office, I decided
to add Charter's telephone service to get unlimited long distance instead of
switching everything over to AT&T. That proved to be the worst mistake I've
ever made with any kind of utility-related decision.
My home security system activated multiple times in the middle of the night
when Charter's phone service burped. The first time, I woke up to hear the
alarm going off for the first time ever. Rather than waiting for someone from
Central Control to check in, I decided to call 911. Imagine my reaction when I
found the phone line dead. I grabbed a handgun and slowly made my way
downstairs from the bedroom, only to find everything locked up tight and
undisturbed - except for my sleep and my blood pressure.
Service calls here did nothing to mitigate the problem, which I solved by
taking everything to AT&T. That being said, my 6-meg DSL has delivered as
advertised, and it doesn't seem to suffer the periodic lapses of service that
were pretty consistent here with Charter's high-speed.
I don't have an HD package for TV, but I am very pleased with the satellite
service through Dish Network so far. It gives me NASA TV, for example, which
Charter doesn't even offer (or, rather, didn't as of the date I ended
longstanding service with them). Same way with NFL Network, which Charter
pulled after making it available for about 30 days shortly after it launched.
I haven't any filtering issues at all here related to DSL, including with the
security system.
I suppose there is a mix of good experiences and bad with the phone comapny
and with cable. I hope you end up pleased, whichever way you decide to go. I'm
really glad I made the switch here to AT&T.
73,
Tim

Hi all!
For those interested in different grids, I'm going south
of Phoenix for the AO-51 pass this evening (early Sunday
on the UTC clock) at 0150 UTC. I'll park on the DM32/DM42
grid boundary, north of I-8 in Pinal County, Arizona. I
haven't been down here in a couple of months, and enjoy
handing out the unusual grid DM32 from a location not on
a military bombing range - and without having to cross
the border into Mexico.

I've had it since it was first offered. Other than the major hassle of getting
my ISDN service changed back to analog and getting the DSL configured, I've
had very few problems with it. I had to replace the cable from the NID to the
phone jack after about 6 years because it was falling apart. I replaced it
with outdoor rated cable, as the cable they originally used was indoor rated,
and the jacket degraded to the point it was crumbling. I also replaced the
original Westell WireSpeed modem with a newer one when I upgraded the service.
No HF interference that I can detect, but then I run shielded CAT5 everywhere.

AMSAT-NA VP Operations, Drew KO4MA reported this week, "It looks
like the temperature has come up enough on AO-16 so that the watchdog
problem has gone away. On September 1, I turned the satellite on
collected some telemetry, and then commanded it into bent pipe mode
which is VHF-FM up and DSB-UHF down."
The command team will monitor http://oscar.dcarr.org/ and amsat-bb.
If the satellite goes quiet they will endeavor to restart it as soon
as possible. Occasional interruptions to gather telemetry are likely.
Just as a reminder, AO-16 now operates as a cross mode, cross band
voice repeater, with an uplink on 145.920 FM. The downlink is reduced
carrier AM, similar to double sideband, on 437.026. Most stations
find receiving the downlink on USB works best.
Work is continuing to predict how long this latest period of operation
may last, but initial estimates are around 2-3 months total, symmetric
around a period of continuous illumination in October. There may not
be another opportunity after this one, as the satellite will generally
head towards longer eclipses (and lower temperatures) for several years.

1. Upcoming School Contact
An ARISS contact has been scheduled with Prairielands Council, Boy
Scouts of America at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, IL on Satur-
day, September 13 at 15:54 UTC. The contact will be facilitated by
telebridge station WH6PN in Hawaii. During the event, Scouts will
earn the Space Exploration Merit Badge, which includes the Mars
Mission Design and the Moon Base Model construction. NASA DLN will
assist with teaching these two topics. Scouts will design and launch
water rockets and explore robotic technology. Segway of Chicago will
assist in Robotics education. Participants will also complete many
of the Radio Merit Badge requirements. The local rocket club will
provide rocket launches throughout the event, two during the outdoor
viewing of the movie "October Sky." The event will conclude with a
hot air balloon launch. Boy Scouts (ages 11-17), Cub Scouts (ages 6-10),
and adult volunteers have been invited to the event. The Space Jam-
boree has attracted the attention of regional media outlets. Four
television stations, radio stations, and local newspapers are planning
features on the Space Jamboree.
2. Swiss Contact Successful
On Saturday, August 30, youth attending Schulehaus Feld 1 in Richterswil,
Switzerland participated in a successful ARISS contact via telebridge
station VK4KHZ in Australia. To prepare for the event, children produced
drawings, plays, research papers and multimedia products which were dis-
played the day of the contact. More than 500 students, parents, teachers
and visitors gathered in the sports hall to watch as 21 students posed
questions to Greg Chamitoff, KD5PKZ, aboard the ISS. Additionally, an
audio link was set up outside the sports hall for other visitors to listen
in. Two television stations (SF DRS Aktuell Schweizer Fernsehen, Regional
Fernsehen Tele Z?rich), one radio station (Radio Z?richsee) and three
newspapers (Z?richsee Zeitung, Neue Z?rcher Zeitung NZZ, Tages-Anzeiger)
covered the event. The audio was fed into the EchoLink AMSAT server, which
received 12 connections, and also into Internet Radio Linking Project
(IRLP) Reflector 9010.
3. ARISS Presentation Given at CLC Conference
The Challenger Learning Center (CLC) Lead Flight Directors Conference was
held in Wellington, Kansas on August 24 - 28. An ARISS presentation was
given during the conference on August 27, covering the ARISS program and
the school application process.

All,
In the past 24 hours, two e-mail "Press Releases" were sent out by Miles
Mann, WF1F, about ARISS related activities. Please ignore these e-mails as
they are not totally accurate and Miles was given direction to not release
this information.
What was accurate is that the ARISS team has been working very closely with
Richard Garriott, W5KWQ, his father Owen Garriott, W5LFL, the International
Space agencies and Space Adventures on ARISS related activities for
Richard's flight which is planned for mid-October. This includes several
educational outreach contacts with the USA-based Challenger Centers, several
other internationally based schools, some opportunities for general QSOs
and, if the hardware is flown, an opportunity to receive some SSTV downlinks
from Richard.
However, the ARISS team is still working out the specifics on this
initiative. We have not totally vetted these specifics through the ARISS
international team. We have not completed coordination of our efforts with
the requisite space agencies---RSA/Energia in Russia and NASA in the USA.
And we have not completed coordination of our efforts with Space Adventures,
who is working with the Russians to fly Richard on the Soyuz to ISS.
I hope you can be patient with the ARISS team as we work this coordination
out. We should be able to provide additional details in the next 14 days.
And I hope you all get prepared for a lot of excitement this fall. Richard
Garriott will fly almost 25 years after his father, Owen, W5LFL, made
history as the first ham radio operator to communicate from a vehicle in
space. And Mike Finke, who flies up with Richard, will take the helm as the
ISS Expedition 18 Commander. Mike is a true ham radio enthusiast who plans
to keep the ARISS microphone hot with lots of QSO excitement.
On behalf of the ARISS international team I appreciate your patience on this
and thank you all for your interest in the ARISS program.
73,
Frank H. Bauer, KA3HDO
AMSAT-NA V.P. for Human Spaceflight Programs
ARISS International Chairman
