All,

In the past 24 hours, two e-mail "Press Releases" were sent out by Miles
Mann, WF1F, about ARISS related activities. Please ignore these e-mails as
they are not totally accurate and Miles was given direction to not release
this information.

What was accurate is that the ARISS team has been working very closely with
Richard Garriott, W5KWQ, his father Owen Garriott, W5LFL, the International
Space agencies and Space Adventures on ARISS related activities for
Richard's flight which is planned for mid-October. This includes several
educational outreach contacts with the USA-based Challenger Centers, several
other internationally based schools, some opportunities for general QSOs
and, if the hardware is flown, an opportunity to receive some SSTV downlinks
from Richard.

However, the ARISS team is still working out the specifics on this
initiative. We have not totally vetted these specifics through the ARISS
international team. We have not completed coordination of our efforts with
the requisite space agencies---RSA/Energia in Russia and NASA in the USA.
And we have not completed coordination of our efforts with Space Adventures,
who is working with the Russians to fly Richard on the Soyuz to ISS.

I hope you can be patient with the ARISS team as we work this coordination
out. We should be able to provide additional details in the next 14 days.

And I hope you all get prepared for a lot of excitement this fall. Richard
Garriott will fly almost 25 years after his father, Owen, W5LFL, made
history as the first ham radio operator to communicate from a vehicle in
space. And Mike Finke, who flies up with Richard, will take the helm as the
ISS Expedition 18 Commander. Mike is a true ham radio enthusiast who plans
to keep the ARISS microphone hot with lots of QSO excitement.

On behalf of the ARISS international team I appreciate your patience on this
and thank you all for your interest in the ARISS program.

73,

Frank H. Bauer, KA3HDO
AMSAT-NA V.P. for Human Spaceflight Programs
ARISS International Chairman

I have had AT&T DSL since at least 2000. Other than spending a month
screaming at AT&T to fix their lousy phone lines, it has performed flawlessly.
I also have a TS-2000X and have had no problems with either the DSL
interfering with it or with the TS-2000X interfering with the DSL. The TS-
2000X does take out my WiFi WAP on 6 meter SSB, but the antenna is only about
15 feet away and the WAP only cost me $20 - you get what you pay for...

getting my ISDN service changed back to analog and getting the DSL configured,
I've had very few problems with it. I had to replace the cable from the NID to
the phone jack after about 6 years because it was falling apart. I replaced it
with outdoor rated cable, as the cable they originally used was indoor rated,
and the jacket degraded to the point it was crumbling. I also replaced the
original Westell WireSpeed modem with a newer one when I upgraded the service.
No HF interference that I can detect, but then I run shielded CAT5 everywhere.

I have run 2 meg DSL from Frontier (there are only so many ways one can
install ADSL) and will be similar to AT&T. I have had not had any problems
of interference from the DSL. The cheap routers and access points sold
today, yes but nothing from the DSL carrier on the twisted pair. I do all
my filtering at the DMARK point, which happens to be just where the cable
enters the house. I also have my modem and AP there with a router feeding
the rest of the house.

And as to the poor sales guy who claimed 6 meg (let alone 6 geg) at 15K feet
from MTSO...physics has a problem with that.....

Frank...

excitement is really high...wow...more canned QSO's for schools that really
could be done via the TDRS link and no one would know the difference.

If some QSO's come from ISS that are really amateur radio...well thatmight be
a Mach buster.

great job

Hi all,

Thanks for all the reports and beacons I received over the last 3 weeks.

The Voltage has never climbed over 3 volts (in full sunlight). We can assume
that COMPASS is totally OFF during eclipses.

If COMPASS enters the sunlight she will reboot. Because the low voltage
COMPASS is switching into emergency mode.

That means, that CDHS (Command & Data Handling Subsystem) and ADCS (Attitude
Determination and Control Subsystem) units are completely off. Unfortunately
this means also, that we CAN NOT change the threshold values by commands.

That's the main problem. It seems the satellite is "locked" because in
emergency mode she will accept only two commands: hard reset and TX enable.
Both commands are impractical for recovery.

The only thing we can do is WAIT. Wait for longer sun periods and voltages
over 3.47 Volts. That's the standard threshold value in emergency mode to
switch into powersafe mode. Only in this mode we can change the threshold
values.

We may have lost a cubesat, but we've definitely got some new friends :-)
Thank you all for your efforts!

73, Mike

Hello Frank,

I?m sure this mission will be so excitant for hamradio, we knows that Mike
Finke is hamradio entusiast, and we are looking very close to his mission,
not only for the ARISS events, but also for the modifications on ARISS
Kenwood radio onboard ISS.

I hope we can listen Richard here over Lisbon/Portugal, to say Hello!

ARISS team is doing an excelent job!

Hi all,

just heard a very good sounding beacon from COMPASS.

07.09.2008 09:50UTC 70074030370000210100b807ff

---------------------------------------------------

Solar Cell Voltage 2.20 V

Solar Panel 6 Cur 43.92 mA

Solar Panel 2 Cur 0.00 mA

Solar Panel 3 Cur 345.10 mA

Solar Panel 4 Cur 301.18 mA

Solar Panel 5 Cur 401.57 mA

EPS Reset Counter 0

Power Level Critical Battery Capacity

Heater Active Battery Heater ON

Power Safe Counter 1

Emergency Mode Counter 0

Battery Voltage 3.61 V

Battery Current 43.92 mA

Battery Temperature -1 ?C

Voltage increased and powersafe counter as well. That means no reset during
the last eclipse.

Can somebody try to send the commands, please ????

Thanks ,

Hi all,

I don't want to impose but I received some good COMPASS beacons from Japan.

COMPASS has no reset since several eclipses and remains on! The voltage is
increased to 3.67 volts and the heater is partial OFF (depends on
temperature).

Now it's important to observe the beacon and send the commands for changing
the heater threshold.

My next pass is at 1900UTC - so I am on pins and needles. I hope you'll back
my plan. Thank you all for your efforts.

Hi all,

I got a lot beacons and we can see that COMPASS survives all the eclipses.
The battery voltage is increased to 3.67 volts.

Please keep on trying to listen the beacon and send the following commands:

****13#200# threshold heater off to -55 degr

****14#200# threshold heater on to -55 degr

****15#255# low batt threshold to max -> charge batteries

****16#255# critical batt threshold to max -> emergency mode (to

save power)

If COMPASS receive this sequence successfully you can hear a short
confirmation beep.

Uplink: 145.980 MHz FM

Downlink: 437.275 MHz

Thanks for your time and your efforts!
