Hi Mike,

Well, this is interesting... Good news, I guess, but also a puzzle.

I just had a low pass, off to the west, 10 degrees at the maximum. I tried
sending the commands below, as I have tried before. As before, there were no
confirmation beeps. But, right in the middle of the pass, the beacon came on.
Nice and strong, as if nothing were wrong. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to
record it, so I don't know what it said. I let the beacon finish, and sent
the commands again. Again, no beeps.

I thought that I have been doing this right, but not getting a confirmation
beep tells me that my commands aren't getting through. I'm sending the
commands by hand - DTMF pad on my Yaesu 736r. I've set up another receiver to
verify the tones are being sent, and they sound ok. Any ideas? For example,
is there a specific rate that the tones need to be sent?

Fellow Hams,

Thanks to all who have helped us tracked CP4 in its time of need. With the
extra packets we've been able to fully characterize one of our voltage sensors
as it deteriorated. This information will be helpful in predicting sensor
failure for our other on board sensors. Even though CP4 is no longer in an
emergency state, we still welcome and appreciate any data you can collect from
CP4. Unfortunately though, CP4 seems to have reentered its brain dead state
where it no longer beacons. Hopefully this problem fixes itself soon so more
data can be collected.

On a more positive note, we are planning to launch our next satellite CP6 near
the end of this year on a Minotaur from Wallops, Virgina as a secondary to
TacSat 3. Our current plan is to release data acquisition software to the
community to make life for those who would like to track CP6 easier. Stay
tuned for more!

Hi Mike,

Home again and back in business re Compass.

Sent your new revised commands at 2131 UT and all acknowledged OK.
Compass had just started a beacon at AOS and I received another one 10 min
later. Both identical data except for battery temperature as shown below.

Hi all,

I got a lot beacons and we can see that COMPASS survives all the eclipses.
The battery voltage is increased to 3.67 volts.

Please keep on trying to listen the beacon and send the following commands:

****13#200# threshold heater off to -55 degr

****14#200# threshold heater on to -55 degr

****15#255# low batt threshold to max -> charge batteries

****16#255# critical batt threshold to max -> emergency mode (to

save power)

If COMPASS receive this sequence successfully you can hear a short
confirmation beep.

Thanks for your time and your efforts!

This looks very good. It is the first telemetry that has the heater
off, which should help the battery charge to full capacity. - Duffey

on the trans-Atlantic ascending pass at around 23:55UTC on Sept. 7, I
seem to have succesfully commanded COMPASS. At least it gave a beep
after the second command. Moreover, I heard (very chirpy!) telemetry
from it. Once I hunted for the signal with RIT, I lost a bit of it,
but the last elements seem to be 201800b72903 unfortunately, the
beacon decoder will not take a partial beacon, so someone else will
need to decode this.

I do hope that I just pressed a wrong button but I was listening to the
downlink on AO-51 during the 23:31/41 utc pass and halfway through the
pass (I copied P9HA, YY6IEA and W6NVE) I lost the downlink compeletly
and I just had the normal static - was this my error or has the software
taken a dump again?

Too bad that was the most refreshing news in the amateur satellite community

Just hope to know when something will be totally accurate as the author also
does?

It was the scheduled mode change. There were a number of commands that
needed to be done for this change, so I took the pass with the higher
elevation at my QTH in east TN.

AO-51 is now in L/S and V/U 145.88/435.150 dual repeater mode.

At the ascending pass around 01:40UTC Sept 8th, I received
confirmation on all four commands. Moreover, I once again got beacon
telemetry. 29000000000000201800bb2902, which reads as battery at
3.67V, heatermode: off and power level: emergency.

First attempt at hearing mode S.? pass wasnt the best, max elevation about 15
degrees.
receiving using a California Amplifier model 130099.? This is the MMTS unit
with the integral yagi with the washer shaped elements.? Yagi boom length
about 2 feet, supposedly 16 dBi gain on 2500 MHz.? Modified with the tape over
the hairpin tuning, etc....? original crystal, received on 123.2 MHz.? Used an
FT-50R for the IF.
Here is what I found:
Unit is linear polarized.? Heard the bird far better using vertical
polarization.
There may have been some tropo, as the time of the pass was about an hour
after sunset.? Temperature cooled off about 15? degrees in the 2 hours
preceeding the pass.
Signal strength ranged from full quieting to "in the noise". with a slow fade
to it.
Heard the bird 3 degrees above the northern horizon when there was a peak in
propagation.
Beasmwidth is workable, but it is tight enough that I'll need an elevation
rotator.? I'm not using one on V/U.
I do not have L band capability (yet), this was just a receiving test, but I
do hope to be able to work U/S or V/S if the bird is capable.
Wonder if this is typical for this mode.
Now some quirks regarding my own gear:? The LO is about 150 KHz off frequency,
but thats not really a big deal.
I just discovered I had the receiver set to AM.? Here I was slope detecting
the thing!? The HT is capable of FM, I was set to AM because I had a brain
lapse when I was pre-checking things before the pass.? Then I forgot to change
it back for the actual pass.
Trees REALLY kill the signal!? I kinda expected that though.
Looking forward to tersting tomorrow during higher and earlier passes, and of
course...using FM to receive!
I have another converter yet to be tried.? The other one has an N connector
for connecting to an external antenna.? I see many ops use helicals.? How many
turns is considered good for this bird ?

Hi All,

I am going to Mt. Nebo, AR this weekend for the Sept. VHF contest. I plan
to work all passes starting Thursday evening Sept. 11 thru Monday morning
Sept. 15. I will be on A0-51, S0-50, A0-27 and A0-16. Also if the contest
gets slow, I will commandeer the contest station to work A0-7B, V0-52 and FO-
29.
I will use the call NE5BO (our contest call) EM35. QSL to QRZ.com address.

Also, I will work A0-51 (1305utc) mobile from EM45 Thursday morning while in
transit.

One more thing, look for us during the contest. We will operate 6M, 2M, 220,
432, 902
1296 and the microwave oven!

Thanks and 73, Rick - WA4NVM

Hi Mike,

Had a Compass pass here about six or seven minutes into eclipse. Sent
commands and first 2 were acknowledged but it was low on the horizon by this
time so maybe it was too low for any further commands to be received.
Received a beacon as follows. Solar panel currents seem a bit strange given
that it was in eclipse!
