Hi all,
I've been trying to receive the 2.4 ghz from AO-51 using an AIDC-3731
downconverter with a grill. Any time I plug in the wall wart that came with
the unit, I get S-9 noise on my receiver. The receiver is an Alinco DR-1200.
I know it's not the best. But it's what I got. From the material I got with
the downconverter, it needs 24 volts. Is that fixed in stone, or can I use
something less for voltage? I think I'll try a couple of 12v batteries in
series. Has anyone else had the same problem? Any suggestions will be
appreciated.
73 and hope to make some more contacts on AO-51. de Doug KA8QCU

It's normal. Most of these MMDS downconverters have WAY too much gain. I had
better results adding a 6~12dB Radio Shack attenuator to mine. I added it to
the "radio" side of the DC injector ("bias tee") so it wouldn't dissipate any
of the DC power being fed up the coax.

I just wanted to report on the fine group the last few nights on L/S. Last
night I heard/worked KC9ELU, VE3NPC, and N0JY, and tonight there was VE3NPC
and N0JY again, and N8MH and KD8CAO. Signals are strong as always, although
there was some buzz on the L band uplink that might be radar related. If you
have L/S gear leftover from AO-40, c'mon up and join us this week on AO-51
L/S. Just make sure your CAT cable is hooked up, or your tuning finger is
limber!

We did get your request, sorry if we didn't reply. As Ib has already
indicated there is no squelch on the receiver on L band. The power and
antenna you describe should be good enough to access the satellite on FM,
especially at time of closest approach. The Doppler tuning is very
important!

I'll see if the -modes group is amenable to running a few days of the L/U
mode at the end of the month with a SSB uplink. If so, I'll let the -bb
know, and of course change the text schedule on the webpage. Be sure to
check the -text- schedule, as I do not believe the graphic one has a L SSB
option.

I can used the 12v from the FT-847 without any noticeable change. I was told
that 24v was used on mmds system to compensate for very long
coaxial cable run and i think there is some kind of voltage limiter in the
downconverter.

I used about 100 feet of RG-59 and i have about S1 to S3 of noise but when
signal are at TCA signal peak at 40DB over S9. If you cannot get
an attenuator used a coax coil this will reduced your noise signal level.

Where is the Doppler.SQF file located. I wanted to edit the AO-51 freqs but
did a complete search for the file on my hard drive and could not find it
anywhere.

Al,

I am assuming you mean the Doppler.SQF file that is associated with SatPC32.
If so, it is (or should be) in the same folder as SatPC32. It should be at
the main SatPC32 folder level, not in a sub folder under SatPC32.

Gould, WA4SXM

Al,

Click on Satellite tab....
Below it will show the path to where your Keplerian data is kept.
Doppler.SQF is in the same directory on mine. Using the Windows "search"
also did not find it.
BTW....I'm running VISTA Ultimate....XP may keep it in the initial SATPC32
folder...VISTA tends to do things in its own way.

Mike, BB,

Compass heard 2008-09-11 18:31 and 18:35 with the famous tsjiep tsjiep
signals. It was a max. 9
degrees elevation pass with good and stable signals. See wav audio files:
