Interestingly enough, we were making a sked between the US Naval
Academy and the US Coast Guard academy for the morning on the

Keith
There was an update on P3E at the Amsat-UK Colloquium in July 2008.
This was filmed and archived at www.batc.tv > film archive > Lecture 9.
Lecture 10 gives an update on P5A.
In a nutshell :- Amsat-DL are treating P5A as the primary mission, with
P3E being a 'test bed' for P5A carrying some of the P5A communication
systems, along with some rather useful transponders of course. The
rationale being that P3E flies first to prove the various systems
required for P5A, thus de-risking the latter.
Amsat-DL are seeking funding for the combined P5A/P3E project.
Full details in the presentations - recommended viewing.

That appears to be the consensus. Now is that GS-232 compatible? Or
does it only work with certain programs? Perhaps those questions are
already answered in your review, I'll look for it. I use HRD, and am
trying out SATPC32.
Thanks for everyone's suggestions. Now if only I could find a really
accurate way of initially pointing my antennas, but that's another
matter. Sometimes the program will tell me to point it at say 310
degrees, but I might find I have a better signal at 300, or perhaps 320.

I would like to see an Annual Report to the membersip. I think that
would be a great forum for the status of our mission. If there is a
committee that does that I am happy to help. If not I would really
like to know to whom I could make such a reccomendation.

Hello Robb and the BB,
AMSAT presents a report to the membership each year at the annual meeting
during the Symposium, generally Saturday afternoon. See the Symposium
registration page at http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/symposium/2008/index.php
We are planning on a Saturday session in Atlanta this year. Robin, AA5RC
and his team in Atlanta are working on providing an Internet broadcast of
the annual meeting, and possibly a way to take questions.
It is a matter of getting the volunteers and equipment to do these things.
I haven't announced this officially yet since I don't have all the i's
dotted and t's crossed, but we are close.

I was able?to copy the Beacon approx one week ago when DO 64 came out of
eclipse at?the exact time?indicated by SAT32PC?here in CN89.?? A few weeks ago
I heard some very weak SSB within the passband.
?
My attempts to upliink to DO64 with approx 200W eirp?using SSB?have not
worked.??? I have made numerous VO52 contacts so I am fairly sure my gear is
working okay.
?
I'm going to wait untill I hear an actual VO52 QSO before I spend much more
time on the TX side of things.???
?
Does any one know if the typical transponder signal levels are comparable to
the Beacon ??? The beacon is weak but readable for me.?? If the typical signal
levels thru the transponder were say 10 db down from the beacon I'm not sure I
could hear a QSO.
?
DO64 might prompt me to upgrade my station somewhat (:
?

I have never heard anything on DO-64 (but I've only had my satellite
antennas up for a few months). I was wondering if there was something
wrong on my end.

Hi,
Re: SatPC32 Interface to Yaesu G 5400B
New to the group... I tried to access the archives but there isn't an easy
way to search them, so forgive me if this question has come up and been
answered before.
I'm helping a friend migrate to a new USB-only XP computer where he wants to
run SatPC32 and interface it to a Yaesu 847 radio and a Yaesu G 5400B Az/El
rotor.
Our first problem is coming up with USB-to-serial converters that will work
with the serial feeds to the radio and rotor. I tried one brand of converter
and that didn't work. I know such converters are finicky, so I'll try
another brand and hope that works. If I'm successful, that should solve the
CAT control of the radio via SatPC32.
But I'm not sure how to interface to the rotor. SatPC32 does not have a
rotor control choice for the G 5400B. Has anyone solved this problem?
Comments and suggestions welcome.

I forgot to mention that he's currently using the Unitrac interface to the G
5400. That's not supported by SatPC32. Any recommendations on an interface
to use, preferably one with a direct USB connection (if such an animal
exists).

Hi,
I use the USB converters from Parallax. I haven't had one that didn't work
in an application yet. I've also used a keyspan device, one USB to 4 serial,
they're on the pricey side and mine died but it worked quite well when it
was working.

Hi Mark!

I've also made contacts on VO-52, to confirm my portable setup (two
FT-817NDs, TX radio at 5W, Arrow Antennas handheld 2m/70cm Yagi)
works OK for U/V operation. For DO-64, I can hear its CW beacon on
most visible passes when it is operational. As for the transponder, it
is much weaker than VO-52. I can hear my own CW through it on
most passes, but for SSB I need to wait until the satellite is above 40
degrees elevation to hear my own voice.
So far, no QSOs on DO-64 yet. Until I get a 2m preamp, I won't have
as many opportunities to make QSOs on DO-64 compared to VO-52.
> I'm going to wait untill I hear an actual VO52 QSO before I spend

Probably a good thing. I did the same thing initially, and then started
working on tuning my radios so I could keep hearing myself on the
downlink. After that, I worked on keeping up with other stations so I
could make some QSOs and have nice conversations. Computer
control is right now not a high priority when operating portable, but
eventually I will make that happen.
Good luck working on your station. I hope to work you soon on VO-52
or some other satellite - maybe even DO-64.

Hi all,
Please keep in mind that Delfi-C3 has no active attitude control
system and therefore does not have a constant polarization sense as in
slowly tumbles trough space.
So it is important to switch polarization both on uplink and downlink.
The beacon is about 10dB below the transponder PEP, and off course the
transponder PEP is shared between transponder users.
A 2m pre-amp will be a huge improvement on your station and is well
worth considering the expense.
The beacon and transponder of Delfi-C3 are switched on together, so
once you hear the CW beacon the transponder is also on.

Hi Joe,
Thanks for the mail. I kind of lost interest after the latest
extended stay in hospital but I got back on AO-7 today ... to find some clown
knocking six kinds of excrement out out of the transponder.
Probably another 100w/10 element beam uplink and rusty six inch nail for a
receive aerial.
Have a good weekend mate.

Hi John,
Is the U/V (B) transponder working on AO-7?
