AMSAT sure is well represented at the ARRL Southwestern Division
Convention in Mesa, Arizona!
The AMSAT booth looks great...and I just attended WD9EWK Patrick's
presentation entitled, "Typical Radio Gear for Satellite
Communications." His room was darned near full...as was the crowd for
W7LB Larry's earlier presentation, "Future Satellites..."
Great job to all the AMSAT folks who made this happen. We looked first-
class and appropriately professional!

Hi,
I use SatScape and you need to update the "amateur.txt" file (which is
in the SatScape folder) with the keps for DO-64 using the keps provided
here on the list by Ray Hoad. Many satellite keps come with SatScape
when you down load the program but it might not be up to date with DO-64
so its best to update them with Ray's posting.
If I've confused you even more, contact me off the list and I'll walk
you through the very simple process.

If you use: http://www.amsat.org/amsat/ftp/keps/current/nasa.all
you will have all the active amateur satellites, as well as DO-64.

I just ending a near complete pass QSO with Michael KC9ELU on L/S. This
western pass was much better than the east one?. Always manually
tracking the uplink i found a way to control the doppler on the downlink
using
the AFC button on the PCR-1000 that i used to received the
output of the AIDC downconverter on 123mhz. There is no need to have a PC
tracking program just tune the downlink and let the AFC doing the
job!! It works and if you loose the downlink for few minutes the AFC is
quite
agile and he will retune by himself right on the center of
the downlink. You can always fine tune the frequency manually. The scope
feature is also usefull if you drift too far away from the
downlink you can see where the signal is without tuning up and down.
I don't know if this will work for other type of receiver but the FT-847
does
not have this feature?

Got the same results here i got explanations regarding this signal drop
for
polarisation change but as the satellite attitude is
uncontrolled i tend to believe it's more an effect of the antennas
pointing
towards the earth station and pointing away than a polarisation
issue. This change in the signal level start exactly pass the TCA point
and
signal degrade up to a point he's drop below the noise?
I try to figure out the satellite shape spinning and thumbing in space in
regard of the polarisation and it will be very odd that the
polarisation change happen just at TCA?
Any ideas here?

Hi Greg-
Too bad about the lonely pass. I haven't done a lot of research since
I (recently) got back into working the birds, but from what I remember
in the AO-40 days, my biggest problem working the microwave modes was
finding equipment. I remember Down East made microwave gear but they
were moving offices for what seemed like forever, and now it appears
they're swamped with backlog and aren't able to fill new orders.
My question is, what L/S gear do you use, and where does one find
microwave gear these days?

My Kenpro KR-500 elevation rotor has quit working. Has anyone the voltage
outputs on the wiring terminals to the rotor. Like to check the controller
before taking the rotor down.

Hi Robert,
The equipment is my receive side from my AO-40 setup, along with a newly
acquired transmit side.
The receive side starts with a home made 3 3/4 turn helix in the bottom
inch
of a grapefruit juice can, which makes up the feed for a BBQ grill antenna
that I lined with window screen in order to make it usable for circularly
polarization. There's a Khune 2.4 ghz preamp (highly recommended!)
attached
to the feed, and a short cable to one of those infamous Drake
downconverters.
I modified the Drake in an unusual way, moving the local oscillator from
whatever it was to 2100 mHz. That put AO-40's 2401.3xx mHz downlink in
the
middle of the Drake's design passband, and in a nice place between our 2m
and
70cm bands so that I could use either as an uplink without interference.
There's about 60' of Quad-shield RG-6 out the back of the Drake to the
shack.
where it terminates on a power injector connected to a multi-way Radio
Shack
RF (video) switch. The switch allows me to select our pre-Cable TV
antenna
(never throw anything away!) or the Drake as an input to an old ICOM
R-7000!
all-mode scanning receiver. The receiver is pretty deaf by many
standards,
and AO-40 was never more than an S1 or S2 on the meter, but it worked.
(I've
had AO-51 up to about S4 recently. Wow!)
The transmit side starts in the shack with an ICOM 1271A tranceiver that I
picked up from a fellow Ham last year. I'd never been on 1.2 gHz before,
so
this was new territory. The tranceiver feeds a few feet of RG-8-like
stuff
(RG-214, I think) to get out of the shack, then there's about 60' of 1/2"
hardline up to the roof, where it switches again to the RG-8-like stuff to
go
around the rotor and up to the antenna. The antenna is an 18 turn helix
that
I made from aluminum ground wire and wire ties. About 10 watts goes into
the
coax in the shack; not sure what makes it out the other end, but it's
apparently quite sufficient for AO-51. I didn't have the 1.2 gHz
equipment
when AO-40 was working, so I don't know how well it would have worked on
the
higher altitude satellites.
The rotor assembly is home made; ham and tv-type rotors, run from a
homebrew
controller.
Pictures at http://home.wavecable.com/~ko6th, at the bottom of the page.
So, to answer your question, a lot of my getting on the microwave bands
has
been through stuff that I have built myself, with a few key components
acquired opportunistically as they came around. From what I've seen
recently,
there are still downconverters to be had, as are the grill dishes, etc.
Lots
of folks have used the small 18" satellite TV dishes that many neighbors
are
giving away for free. The key is to be constantly hunting for stuff,
designing and re-designing as you go, depending on what you can come up
with.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

In SatPC32, you select the rotor interface that you are using with the
5400B, not the 5400B itself. I use the FODTrack interface with an older
laptop with a parallel port for portable operation, and a desktop PC at
home.

Greg,
There is a way to figure out how much power you are getting to your
mode-L antenna. Times MIcrowave has a on-line calculator for many of
the more popular cables.
http://www.timesmicrowave.com/cgi-bin/calculate.pl
If you use the numbers for LMR-600 (3.056-dB/100-feet) in place of
your 1/2-inch hardline you get:
60-feet of cable: Loss=1.8 dB Efficiency = .656
For RG-214 (8.472-dB/100 feet):
10-feet of cable: Loss=0.8 dB Efficiency = .823
add the loss in dB = 2.6 dB, or multiply the efficiencies = 0.54
So 10w x 0.54 = 5.4w
This is a lot for AO-51.
Ain't math fun ;-)

Thanks for the compliments!
In addition to Larry W7LB and me, we had additional help at the AMSAT
booth throughout Friday and today. Ray Fobes W1OTH, an AMSAT
member from Prescott AZ, has been *very* helpful at the booth. With
Ray sitting at the booth and talking with anyone stopping by, Larry and
I were able to make great use of the 2-hour slot we had in a presentation
room this morning. All three of us have been able to wander around the
convention, get lunch when we wanted, and also has allowed me to go
outside the convention hall to attempt demonstrations during the past 2
days.
I apologize to anyone who may have been listening for WD9EWK on the
satellite passes today. There was some really loud QRM that completely
wiped out the 70cm satellite subband throughout the day - most likely from
a generator in an RV parked nearby. I will try again Sunday morning and
possibly early afternoon to do more demonstrations and make more QSOs
for my log from the convention.
There is still a half-day remaining for this convention - 0800 to 1200
local
Sunday morning. After the convention, I will post the slideshow I used
for
my Saturday morning presentation to a web page for anyone else to see
and download.

Where do you suggest mounting discharge units such as the Diamond CA-23RS
- on the mast between the antenna and preamps? and grounded to the mast
which is well grounded?
- on the mast below the preamps and before the feedline enters your
house/shack etc?
- at the radio in the house or shack?
- grounded to your service panel ground cable or grounded to the outside
where your tower is grounded to something like I use - a copper rod driven
5
or 6 feet into moist salty soil.
Knock on wood - I've never had an issue with static discharge that
emanated
from the antenna that has effected any radio or other equipment. Antennas
and mast/tower are well grounded to earth outside my house and not to any
inside cold water pipe. I ground my radio chassis ground lug to a copper
cable run to my electrical panel's ground cable. All the 120 VAC is 3
wire
and grounded to the same electrical panel grounding.
I support there could be a potential between the service panel ground and
the ground for my mast, but, I've never bothered to check this.
I am slightly amused that these units are referred to by the various
manufactures as lighting protection or surge suppressors. Lighting runs
down the outside of a conductor. However, I can see an antenna building
up
a charge with wind or if my neighbour got a direct hit by lightning I
house
probably get some residual EMP. I suppose the discharge created by
shuffling across a carpet in socks with low humidity and touching a wall
switch could be call lighting of a few orders of magnitude less than what
is
commonly understood a lightning.
Am I over thinking all this grounding and static discharge stuff and
unnecessarily worrying about which ground to use. If I get a direct hit
with lightning, all bets are off.
Thanks all...

Where will a version of this be made available to the membership in
the event one cannot attend?
