I had just talked to OH8MBN this last pass when AL1F in AP90 came on. His
first AO-7 QSO. I told Joe he would be a popular fellow on AO-7. Keep an ear
out for him.

Disappointing to note that the BBC's on line news report of the ISS school
contact today with a school in England noted that the contact took place via
"satellite phone" doh!
Bearing in mind there were three or four TV crews there, it is surprising that
they were not given a handout with the facts or that the organisers failed to
brief the media properly!
A bit of a waste of good publicity for ARISS and the amateur radio service
methinks!

If you are offering to help to do PR then please do so. I don't think any of
the _volunteers_ today profess to be experts in that field.
Of course we'd love to have amateur radio stated everywhere. That is my
prime objective after making a successful contact. It was mentioned in the
BBC clip, but only once. We welcome help from those who are able to make
this work better.

Hi Howard,
Always happy to volunteer but geographically speaking I can't really be
much help to AMSAT-UK except on rare trips home :-)
Trevor (M5AKA) is the AMSAT-UK PR guru and does a fine job - after I
brought this to his attention I believe he will be in touch with the BBC
to have the article corrected.
Of course mistakes happen but if no-one notices them and reports them
then errors remain and for something as high profile as this we really
can't afford to pass up on any publicity.
In response to your e-mail though, I am not sure why "volunteers" would
need to be "experts" in PR - the question asked by the media would be
"/how is the contact made/", the answer would be "/amateur radio"/ - how
satellite phones got mentioned and by whom is more the issue I would
have thought!
Having been part of a team that conducted a highly successful School
contact a couple of years ago, I am well aware of the enormous pressures
that are ever present with these things and therefore things can slip!
We had two TV News crews and 3 local papers in attendance and we had
pre-prepared Q&A crib sheets for them to ensure that the subsequent
reporting was as controlled and therefore as accurate as possible.

News on the mission on:
http://english.cri.cn/3126/2008/09/26/1461s409334.htm
On Schenzhou 5 we get a vague summary of their frequencies:
Radio systems of Shenzhou
Chinese media did provide some insight into the radio systems of Shenzhou-5:
" ..... in addition, the ultrashort-wave communication of "Shenzhou-5" will
also be able to collect the physiological data from the
astronaut. ...." To prevent sudden external interference jamming, this
time "Shenzhou-5" spacecraft will also use seven different wave
bands ..... in addition to transmitting data, the spacecraft will also use
short wave, ultrashort wave, S-band, C-band as well as wave
bands with different frequencies for transmission......" (1)
So, UHF was used for transmitting biomediacal telemetry it seems. Normally UHF
means frequencies in the 300-1000 MHz range. S-band
frequencies for transmitting telemetry from the craft is logical since the
Malindi station operated by the Italian Space Agency ASI
probably supports only S-band. C-band is the traditional Chinese TT&C
frequency band. The use of shortwaves is interesting and it is
obvious from pictures of the re-entry vehicle that shortwaves is used during
the touchdown phase. Whether or not shortwaves is used on
orbit is unknown.
The only illustration that could possibly indicate that there are shortwave
transmitters in orbit can be found on the PLA Daily headline
banner reprdoced below. The two whips at te bottoms of the service module
couldpossibly be a real representation of antennas.
Is anyone knows the exact frequencies they are using aboard on Shenzhou 7?

Yup, it's working. Had a nice chat during the 02:46z pass with N6PAA this
evening. We probably could work each other simplex (he's about 30 mi down the
hill from me), but mode LU through AO-51 was significantly more fun.
Thanks, Drew!

I see the BBC has changed it to a "live teleconference link" now so
thats a bit better. Here!
<http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/london/7636229.stm>
Trevor - any chance of getting the BBC to add more specific websites to
the "Related Internet Links" panel to the right of the story? RSGB would
be a good start!

I think you want to look at asatlogger.
Unless you don't have a d700/d710/d7/ts2000, then I don't have a clue
how alogger works.
asatlogger just needs a serial connection to the radio, and the
scripts are customizable.

I don't suppose anyone has any frequencies being used by the crew, do we?

Just heard a bunch of stations on the high angle pass about 1600 UTC.
One thing I am noticing is that FO-29 downlink is 4 kc higher than expected.
I could hear my CW and SSB signals no problem, but they were higher than the
satellite programs predicted.
I did hear a bunch of SSB stations, which is great! Did not work anyone on
this pass, though. :(
