For Compass-1, try 437.275 CW mode for the beacon. Should come every 3
minutes or so. The cw is very "chirpy"; once you hear it you'll know
what I mean.

The cw can be copied in FM mode, but the "sound" you hear will be the
space between the dots and dashes, not the dots and dashes themselves..
think about it and you'll understand... NH7WN has good luck copying
"visually" by recording the audio and then analysing it visually in
Audacity. Send him an email if you're interested.

You might  hear AFSK 1200 baud packet on 437.405 as well, but only very
occasionally, and never in eclipse.

With M2 30 elements CP and a SSB preamp at the antenna, I only get the
bird S-7 to S-9 tops, so you might have a hard time hearing it with an
eggbeater.
Your actual mileage may vary.
I have considered an eggbeater as well, if for no other reason than to
save wear and tear on my 20 year old Yaesu 5400 rotor !

Tim,

You realize that the "low-noise figure" preamp is most affective when
placed at the antenna and that this is because the feedline will
degrade the noise figure.

How the noise figure is affected, is that the amount of loss in the
feedline is directly added to the noise figure of the preamp.  So if
your preamp is 0.5 dB NF (a common value for a good Gasfet preamp)
and your feedline loss is 1.5 dB (what a medium long run of RG-8 or
RG-213 will have at 70cm) then your overall receiving noise figure is
about 2.0 dB (actually there is a small amount of degradation
contributed by your radio's noise figure (which may another 0.1 or
0.2 dB if your preamp gain is 20-dB or more).

So when you place your preamp at the antenna, your receivng system NF
will be close to that of the preamp.  You do not need super low loss
feedling if the preamp is at the antenna.  Use what you have
now.  The feedline loss will add directly to the NF of your radio in
the shack, but the total will be reduced by the gain of the preamp.

I plugged these numbers into my NF program and the result is:
preamp in shack:  system NF = 2.08 dB
system sensitivity: -139.3 dBm  (assuming 2-KHz SSB bandwidth, 150K
of sky temperature, and 100K of antenna temperature)
preamp at antenna:  system NF = 0.58 dB
system sensitivity: - 140.9 dBm

So the NF is dramatically reduced and one can copy signals about 1.6
dB weaker (about 1/2 S-unit).  If signals are S7-9, this will not be
significant but if signals are S0 to S1 it may make the difference
between copying the signal or not!

By all means move the preamp to the antenna.  No change in feeline is
need for reception improvement (assuming here that you are not
planning to use this antenna for transmitting).

Right at the end of this morning's FO-29 pass (about 17:50z) I heard a station
that sounded like "AL1S" in grid square AP90.  That grid would be in Alaska,
which was in the footprint, but there's no AL1S up there (nor KL1S, for that
matter) according to QRZ.com.  Anybody know who that was?

I was at about 5 degrees elevation on the satellite, and I think he caught my
call sign correctly.  I was just about to confirm it all, then my south-
centered antenna controller decided it was time to swing around to the other
side of zero azimuth.  By the time the antenna came back around a minute
later, he was gone.

Related side-question:  Does anyone know if the latest version of Predict
(Linux version) supports "flipped" antenna rotor operation?  My rotor and
controller can do it, but Predict 2.2.1 doesn't.

posted reports for the pass you mentioned and later in the day.

One suggestion I had posted some time ago for these rotors was to change the
bolts holding both halves together when the rotor is NEW and before it is
put up in use, to Allen head bolts.

The standard bolts with flat screwdriver heads become almost impossible to
remove once the ravages of weather have had their toll. The Allen head bolts
can be moved easily as the wrenches do not slip or damage the slots

Also if the end stop limit switches fail, the rotor drives the unit past the
stops ( which are just bent tabs on the mounting plate) and bends the whole
thing out of shape. I have had this happen twice.

Here is my $.02. First smell the motor. If the motor has burnt windings
you  can smell them. mesureesure the resistance
between the winding. If the resistance beteen the winding is roughly
the same
suspect the capastor in the control box. If something mechanical has
failed a visually inspection will reveal it. There a lot of parts in
there but is faitly intutive on how to assemble them.

Hello all!



Two questions on telemetry..



1.       I was considering dedicating a 70 cm "eggbeater" with a preamp as a
good, omni-directional antenna. So far though, it doesn't seem to pick up
below 12 degree elevations. Currently the preamp is in the shack (I know, at
the antenna) and my coax is not optimum. If I use heliax, put the preamp at
the antenna, is this feasible or should I plan on a steerable beam?

2.       I'm having a dickens of a time figuring out what the telemetry
frequencies are. I've looked at DK3WN's site which has the decoding software
but I seem to be having issues finding frequencies, am I looking in the
wrong places?

I will summise that:
Object B was the original crew/payload module.
Object B then split into 3 induvidual parts to become Object F, the re-entry
module and Objects B and E are the propulsion module and crew module.
Object G is the satellite they ejected.
Objects A, C abd D are the rocket body and shields.
