There is another way...
Look for PCMIA serial cards for laptops. Most laptops still have them and it
is possible to get more than 2 real serial ports doing this method.

Actually, PCMCIA is going the way of the dodo as well, but most
midrange or higher laptops these days have an ExpressCard/34 and
ExpressCard/54. For those who are US-based, Buy.com has a card for

99% of the laptops out there these days have only USB ports. To use them
with older serially controlled devices, you have to use a USB-to-serial
converter. I happen to like the Keyspan products, but there are many others
available.

NOt any more.
PCMCIA is now an obsolete standard in favour od something half the width and
only 10% as useful.

My laptop has an Expresscard/54 slot but most cards are 34 width (connectors
are compatible and there's also a USB connector in there)
It wallows around in there like a prick in a shirt sleeve. Be nice if they
fitted the hole more snugly.

There was a similar thread on TAPR_APRS group and many good
suggestions were made.
I had a similar need and bought a TOSHIBA TECRA A9-9019X (WIN XP PRO)
about 6 weeks
ago. I have noticed they are rapidly disappearing so others must like it too.
I
believe it has been out of production for about 8-9 months.

Dear Friends,
In the same vein, I can recommend the Dell D600 (WinXP Pro)
which comes with a serial and a parallel port as well as the
usual WiFi, USB, Ethernet etc.. These were extremely
popular business laptops so they are still widely available.

Luc,
The relay is available from Newark electronics, but since they seem to be
the only supplier, they price it up there just under an ounce of gold. I
recently bought 3 to rebuild my antennas and one for a friend of mine. The
first one was $30. After I bought the first one, they raised the price to
$45 for the next 2.
Just checked, it's still available, $52.93 for one, plus and applicable tax
and shipping. It's the exact replacement. Unsolder the old one, drop in
the new one, and solder the pins. While you are at it, probably a good idea
to recoat the board with fiberglass resin before you replace the relay.
It's pricy, but it's a lot simpler and faster than trying to jerry-rig
something with else.

I agree the D600 and other Dell refurbished notebooks are a good way to go.
Generic memory and/or HD upgrades are readily available at your local
computer shop or nationally at places such as TigerDirect.com
Just Google "Dell D600 Refurbished" and get stuff such as
http://laptopcentre.ca/dell-latitude-d600-pentium-512mb-dvdcdrw-wifi-p-511.h
tml
My personal preference is the D800
http://www.usanotebook.com/1297-DLAD800_dell_latitude_d800_laptops.php
which is about the same price, larger ( thicker ) and was sold originally as
a desktop replacement for business. You can swap out the DVD for a second
battery. Again, generic component replacements ( memory upgrades, HD,
batteries, A/C adapters, etc ) are everywhere.
My D800 is my dedicated ham radio PC and I keep all the neat new ham
software and experimenting away from my mission critical PC.
That being said, the 2 USB ports are never enough nor the one serial port so
I run a powered USB hub and serial/usb converters. e.g. A serial port for a
PacComm for Wisp, serial CAT for FT847 on a USB converter, and a bunch of
other USB connections for LVB Tracker, printer, external hard disk etc.
These old business work horses are fast enough for any ham work I do.
... Alan

I All,
Got a nice SSB QSO via FO-29 this night october 4 on skedule with Luc
VE2DWE during orbit 59911 from 01:50 to 01:56 UTC when the bird
was at the apogee about MA 128
The contact like a conversation with Luc in FN36KA with me in JN70ES
lasted about 6 minutes and the distance covered is 6742.8 km
Signal reports were 5/6 to 5/7 and my maximum elevation was about 2.5
degrees only.
Discussing about a stuck relay with Luc was not a problem at all because
both signals were not affected by QSB and no one word was losted.
If someone in USA or Canada is interested to contact my grid square via
FO-29 on CW or SSB please let me know off line.

Congrats to both of you. Luc es Dom!!
From San Diego on LEO's my "rare" DX is only NE Russia, and have
heard nothing up there in a long time..I get deep in to South America
on occasion, but nothing heard from there recently..
Your successes should encourage more neophytes to try the ssb/cw birds...
It takes a little more "doing", but well worth it, as a lot of us know...
I wish I knew how to rattle some of the "old timers" out of the
bushes, most of them have given up because of some of the garbage on
the reflector...
But still hanging in there for ANYTHING BROADBANDED!!

Thank's John for the info's i will have a look at it. Just before i read you
message i was just ending a FO-29 eastern very low pass 7' max
elevation with Domenico I8CVS. Many thank's Domenico for burning the midnight
oil in the Gulf of Napoli under the rain. Your signal was S4
at the beginning and just when you said your elevation was 0.5' your signal
suddenly increased to 58 59!!! i know you where switching you
polarization at that time i don't know if it was in direct relation or someone
stop sending a carrier but that's what i hear.
I also get you idea about rewinding the relay coil but i will wait for you
message as you told me with your notes about fixing the relay.
John give also an alternative solution a bit pricy... but these ultimate 3
DB'S with the shipping and the custom fees will cost me about
