The serial data commands are listed in the back of the manual for the
VC-H1. It looks like it would be easy to write software for a modern OS
to transfer files. I don't have a VC-H1 to try it with, though.
If anyone in the UK has one they'd like to sell, please let me know ;-)

Hmm. I'd be trying to run it under Wine, since I don't have any Windows
machines and I don't know anyone who does.
Looking at the spec in the manual, it doesn't really seem to mention
much about downloading pictures from the device. If I get hold of one,
I might give Kenwood a poke and see if they have any more comprehensive
information.

I will be leaving both running. Get to see the images instantly and then
record the audio if needed later. Also, if you can set it up, windows remote
desktop would allow you to view the image as it appears during the pass from
another computer via the internet.

I guess like everyone else I am looking forward to Richard Garriott
getting up to the ISS and starting to beam down the pictures!
Two years ago when the SSTV system started for a short period, myself
and David Barber (G8OQW) were fortunate to ("apparently" (so we were
told)) be two of the only hams in the UK to successfully download
images; that in itself made for considerable publicity for the hobby so
if anyone would like to read an article that I wrote and see some of the
pictures that we received then please click here!
<http://www.m0zlb.com/articles.htm>
Please be aware that the article was written in basic terms for an
audience consisting of mainly non-hams but the pictures are nice :-)

Unforrtunately I have no capability for 1.2 Ghz transmit so I won't be sending
any images to AO-51 but I would like to "eavesdrop". Since I have no frequency
pair programmed into SatPC32 for a 1.2Ghz/70cm combination I can just use any
pair that happens to have the right downlink frequency right? I think this is
a correct assumption but I want to be sure. If I need to add an entry to my
frequency parameters I will.

Yes, Michael you are correct
You can use any programmed pair that gives the correct downlink.

Hi Gordon,
I've got the Kenwood software (version 1.10) sort of running under Wine.
There is a tab for SSTV/SkyCommand configuration - slots for your call sign,
message, RSV, and colors for the text (at least I assume that's what they do -
I don't have a VC-H1). The other tabs let you configure all of the memory
channels, APRS parameters, etc. But, I do not see any place to download the
picture files.
The program is set up to communicate with the radio on any of the legacy COM
ports (1-4). I have not been able to get Wine to talk to my D7. The screens
come up, and you can make changes and all that. But it gives a
"Communications timeout" message when you try to read from the radio. I think
Wine is set up right. ~/.wine/dosdevices/com2 is a link to /dev/ttyS1, and if
I run kermit on /dev/ttyS1, I can talk to the radio's TNC just fine. Any
ideas how I can get this to work?
To Allen, I'm pretty sure that the Kenwood software runs under Windows XP Pro.
At least, I've got a configuration file from my D7 file on my hard drive, and
given that Linux isn't reading the radio, it must have been via XP.... I just
don't remember when I last ran it.

An update...

Confirmed... I just tried it again. Actually, it wasn't the dual-booted
Windows XP that I had used, but a Windows XP Pro install running under VMWare,
on the Linux boot. The serial interface was via a Keyspan USB->Serial
converter, that I forced to COM 3 (the default was COM 5, which the Kenwood
software won't talk to).
But VM or not, it was definitely running just fine under Windows XP. Maybe
the type of serial port has something to do with it?

Only heard my own SSTV downlink during the
last pass, mid Atlantic, from here at IO80SM.
I had to revert to manual tuning for the uplink
as the tuning/tracking program I use was way
out on the uplink.
I will give it another go during some of the
