Good Afternoon, all.

What fun receiving the images from the ISS! At the start of the 1819z pass,
there was a short DTMF burst that was so loud that I though one of the
locals was doing it. After hearing "RS0ISS" in CW, I received the images!

The strength of the signals reminded me of what U5MIR sounded like in the
90's.

Thanks to the ARISS team for putting this together.

Yes..that is what happened here in Michigan...1st half of the 18:13 UTC
pass was silent, then the CW intro and it about blew me out of my
chair..dont recall hearing sigs that strong from ISS recently. Got the
first two pix very clearly.. one in Robot36 the second in Martinn1. I
only got about 1/8 of the last one as ISS was setting.

And all on a J pole at 10' to a TM241. Couldn't get any simpler or
cheaper.

What a great time! Cant wait for more.

Hello All,

I just wanted to close the laptop (upstairs) and go to sleep and
I discovered an unexpected suprice afterwards.
During the ISS SSTV pass at 16:56UTC pass I had 2 SSTV software programs
running (MMSSTV and HRD DM780).
HRD DM780 window was opened and MMSSTV window
was minimized to the taskbar.
Just few moments before I wanted to shutt off the laptop I maximized
the MMSSTV window and saw a much better ISS SSTV image.
http://iss.ontwikkel.nl/ISSTV/12Oct2008_1656UTC_ISS_orbit_56702b.jpg
I still do not know why there is so much difference between the 2 images.
The signal from ISS was very clear and I could not understand why the
distortion came on the image (looking at HRD DM780).
Maybe HRD DM780 catched the audio from my internal laptop mic.
I asume DM780 works well and I had a little mistake in the settings.
I will look at it tommorow.

Hello Jim and other CW addicts,

I too, have been a CW junkie all of my ham radio years. I was first
licensed in June of 1960. I can't claim being a total CW operator but
that is certainly my operating mode of choice. I did a quick scan of my
last five log pages. (I keep a hard copy but I also enter my QSOs into
log-EQF so I have a double logging system.) I found only 10 fone
contacts out of about 125 total Qs. When we had AO-40 up and running
quite well I gave up on HF and devoted all my efforts to chasing DX on
that bird. I did actually make nearly 1000 Qs but I will sadly admit
that about 90% of them were on fone. It's not that I wanted to work fone
but there was very, very little everyday CW operation on the bird.
Several expeditions made good use of their time by operating both CW and
SSB. Since I was chasing hard for satellite DXCC I worked whatever DX I
could hear on whatever mode they were using. My first satellite QSOs
were via RS-12 and they were on CW! My first QSOs on AO-10 and AO-13
were also on CW. (Wish I could have been interested in the birds when 13
was in it's prime.) I too, operate , just for the fun of it, in some DX
contests but generally have much more fun doing the CW versions. I often
wonder if those high speed contesters I work can really copy as fast as
they send. I can because I still log on paper first and then e-log
later. I too, work Field Day whenever possible but make the stipulation
that I get to do the CW operating. No one has ever challenged me for
that.
Jim, I too am 70 years old and I'm seriously wondering if I'll live long
enough to see another HEO bird in orbit. At the current rate of putting
such birds into orbit the chances of my living long enough to chase DX on
a satellite again seem, as the saying goes, slim and none!! I love
chasing DX but the challenge of doing it via ordinary HF is certainly
less satisfying than working Cocos Keeling Island with less than five
degrees of elevation at both ends and doing so through a hole in an Elm
tree across the street from my satellite antennas.
BTW, I need only North Korea to have them all on HF but I have only about
120 worked via satellite so the challenge remains for me via satellite
but without an HEO bird it's only a vague dream.
I favor, at the moment, 30 meters only because there is no fone allowed
on this band. I hear quite a few 'struggling" CW operators there but I
have to give them due credit for trying. I don't currently operate 40
meters but I too have often called CQ on 30 without any answer
whatsoever.
Interest in CW is waning and doing so at a fast pace. Jim, let me know
if you'd like a sked for a CW QSO. Seems we have much in common. Please
promise not to send faster than 25/30 WPM. That's OK in a contest or for
a DXpedition but 20 WPM makes for a much more enjoyable rag chew!!
Long live CW both on HF and satellite but us old "die hards" can't
continue for much longer. Admittedly, we need help. Right, Jim?
73 to all. Frank, K?BLT

VP2EAG, FS/KO4MA, and KG4MA were all very well received on satellite! It's a
hoot to be on the other end of a pile up, and well worth the hassle of
taking the radios, and getting the license.

Hi!

Yes, Drew, it is fun to be on the receiving end of the pileup. I have not
done this on satellite from other countries (yet), but on HF I've done it
a few times from Argentina, Canada, and Mexico in the past few years.
Now that the satellite "bug" has bitten me and it's a terminal case, I will
make sure that I include satellite operating when I travel.

Next month, I will be in Vancouver BC for a few days. I will only take a
couple of HTs and portable antennas with me, and operate from around
the city (CN89) and possibly at Whistler (CO80) on the FM birds as
CJ7EWK - replacing my normal VA7 prefix with a special prefix that
Canadian hams are permitted to use during this month and November.

Other future trips... I used to frequently visit Mexico and get the XE radio
permits for those trips. The process was a hassle, having to pay around
US$ 100 to US$ 125 for a 6-month permit. Having the legal paperwork
when in Mexico with radios was a good thing, despite the cost and the
hassles, as not having it might cost a lot more in the end. I don't know
how the current struggles between different drug cartels and the Mexican
Army will turn out, but I hope to return to operating from there in the not-
too-distant future as XE2/WD9EWK via HF and now satellite.

For satellites, it looks like there are some very desireable grids inside
Mexico not far from the USA border for satellite operators. I've seen the
lists of some long-time ops and web sites like the one WI7P (ex-N7SFI)
has, to get some idea of which Mexican grids would be in demand via
satellite. I am not limiting myself to just those grids near the border, as
I might expand my travels further into Mexico in 2009. We'll see...

73!

For the next several days here are some Satellite DX opportunities that have
crossed the ANS Editor desk ...

+ Dave, G1OCN hopes to be using the call sign G1OCN/VP9 while on
holiday in Bermuda from Monday 1October 13 to Sunday October 19.
His equipment will be a Kenwood THD7G with an Arrow antenna, so he
will be operating V/U FM, on those available satellites.

+ Paul, 2E1EUB will be active on all birds from Scotland with the
callsign 2M1EUB. He plans to operate from October 11 - 21.

+ Joe K3SZH reports working EA8HB, G1WPR, PA1TNO, G7NFO, ON7EQ and
K8YSE on FO-29.

+ Congratulations to Mika, OH8MBN on AO7 on his 2000th contact via
AO-7.

Hi All,
I've been noticing that when AO-51 passes me, I have a much harder time
receiving a decent signal from it. It does not matter what type of antenna I
have ( beam or vertical). But it's much tougher copying a voice signal after
the bird passes . I'm doing the doppler shift, but it's still quite hard. Am
I doing something wrong?

The crew is only running the SSTV project in their Off time.

Tuesday is a Docking day, so all non essential radio projects will be turned
