Just heard Garriot on Voice over southern France, full scale on TH-D7 +
Rubber Duck.
Perhalps I wasn't able to get into the pileup...

Is there any particular modality to get an answer?

By the way, thanks for the answers on antenna matters...

Hi Nick,

Unsolder both primary wires from the 2A fuse holder and from the SW1
power switch and measure again the primary resistance and see if it is still
< .5 ohm

If the resistance is < .5 ohm and the primary winding has been completely
carbonized by the heat then your transformer should have smoket for a long
time before to go in short circuit and you should have been alerted smelling
the smoke.

If the transformer is not showing the classic smell of a smoked winding
it is possible that the short appens accidentally somewere between the first
and second wire feeding the primary winding so that the short can be found
and removed.

In addition measure if the primary winding is insulated or not from the
iron core i.e. from the ground and from both the low voltage secondary
windings.

In any case if the transformer is not longer available from Yaesu it is
not a problem to rewind it completely.

I would be very grateful if anyone could offer a recording of this morning's
8:31 am pass of Richard Garriott's transmissions over the Gulf of Mexico (1331
UTC).

I clearly recall listening to his father as he passed over in the Shuttle in
the early 80's. I was parked then along the Cane River, in Natchitoches, La.
Rig: Kenwood 7400A,
Auto: Old Bonneville...leaky trunk....mobile whip. Today it was my pickup
truck, 706mkIIG, and $4 worth of WA5VJB 4 ele beam on a pole in a stake box.
Expensive rotator...

Back to pediatrics...

Best Regards to all.

Hey everyone,

Between 11:48:48 UTC and 11:39:04 UTC this morning, I enjoyed another cross-
band, cross-mode, cross-satellite (AO-16/AO-51) contact ? this one with Rick,
WA4NVM, in Memphis, Tenn.

Rick?s beams were pointed east, and he heard me on AO-51?s 435.300 FM
downlink. I was listening on 437.026 in sideband and, as usual, was hand-
holding my Elk log periodic. It was pointed almost due west when I heard Rick
call me. I had transmitted an ID with my callsign and ?listening on AO-16.?

I transmitted 5 watts from VX-7R HT into a 0-gain eFactor omni antenna, using
the same 145.920 FM uplink for AO-16 that AO-51 uses.

I first copied Gerry, VE4GTB, from Winnipeg at 11:35 UTC. I then heard Pete,
AA1PL, confirm his first-ever satellite contact with Rick, KB1PAJ. Rick uses a
handheld station for the FM satellites, so his signal wasn?t making the trip
to AO-16. AA1PL, on the other hand, was loud, clear and strong ? and he was
mobile! I?ve emailed him to let him know that, because of the respective
footprints of the satellites when I heard him, his signal extended from
somewhere around 28 degrees west to about 144 degrees west ? not bad for a
mobile! I sent an MP3 clip, too.

Here are the numbers regarding the N3TL-WA4NVM contact. I?ll use 11:39:00 UTC
for reference since it was just slightly past mid-contact:

AO-51 was at 7.3 degrees elevation to Rick?s east at a range of 2,377.198 km
(1,477.122 mi).
AO-16 was at 11.6 degrees elevation to Rick?s west at a range of 2,221.306 km
(1,380.256 mi).

AO-51 was at 15.8 degrees elevation to my east at a range of 1,795.391 km
(1,115.604 mi).
AO-16 was at 4.7 degrees elevation to my west at a range of 2,794.482 km
(1,736.411 mi).

What a hoot!

Before closing - congrats to those who have worked NA1SS. How cool is that?!

Is the ISS uplink freq for voice still 144.490 for the US? I can hear W5KWQ
(Richard) talking to people but cant hear the other end even when the call is
fairly nearby.

Hey John and all.

Congrats on your contacts last night! Best of luck with 100 mW tonight.

I'm writing to offer some numbers in support of the following suggestion -
"flea power" isn't ONLY for AO-51's "QRP pair."

To date, I have made 57 contacts running 50 mW rf out, and 24 contacts running
300 mW rf out. Only 27 of those those contacts - exactly 1/3 - occurred when I
was working AO-51 on 144.880 up and 435.150 +/- down. The other 2/3 occurred
on AO-27 (when it was still operating), SO-50, and AO-51 when I was working
145.920 up and 435.300 down.

Here are the numbers in more detail:

Contacts on .05-watt rf out:
AO-51 (145.920/435.300) - 20
AO-51 (145.880/435.150) - 11
AO-27 - 13
SO-50 - 11

Contacts on .3-watt rf out:
AO-51 (145.920/435.300) - 6
AO-51 (145.880/435.150) - 16
AO-27 - 2
SO-50 - 0

Eleven of those 16 contacts noted just above on 145.880/435.150 occurred last
weekend, as posted here earlier. So, this time last week, I actually had made
more contacts on AO-51's regular frequency pair than on the QRP pair when
running .3-watt rf out.

Hi All,

I am delighted to report that all the gear has been set up and tested for
tomorrow's ARISS School Contact with Richard Garriott W5KWS on the ISS from
Budbrooke Primary School near Warwick in the UK.

Our testing included actually receiving SSTV pictures from the Space Station
and listening to Richard talking to a number of european amateurs - everyone
here is very excited!

In addition to listening on 145.80MHz it will also be possible to follow the
contact by watching www.batc.tv and clicking on "live events"

The contact takes place tomorrow Friday at 11:00 UTC

Wait for ISS Crew to call CQ or QRZ.

Send only your call sign and wait for crew to acknowledge your specific call
sign.

Listen closely for the call of the station he/she is talking with.

If you do not hear your specific call sign, do not transmit again until you
hear the ISS crew member say CQ or QRZ

Please be courteous.

Even the crummiest sound card will record everything
there is to record from a communications-grade audio
channel.

In the case of SSTV you are doing frequency demodulation,
and the more samples, the better. With modern computers
the compute horsepower required is a minor consideration.

hi folks, qsl NA1SS , got the call in the pic but not a very good pic. must
of been a weak signal (AT)18 degrees north. Will be there for the next good
pass. Found out my rig must be on fm not dig mode for SSTV. (ft-857) By the
way our 145.800 freq has lots of noise in my area of the world. (west
Michigan) Wondering how it is in other areas.
