Hey Everyone,
>From 22:48 UTC to 22:54 UTC later today (16 October), AO-16 and AO-51 will be
"up together" again. AO-51, during that period, will cover much of the eastern
U.S. and Canada, according to Orbitron. AO-16 will cover all of the western
U.S. during that same period.
Stations in the Great Lakes and Upper Midwest, please note - it appears as
though Alaska stations may hear folks working the 145.920 uplink on AO-51 if
they're working AO-16 after both kick me out of their respective footprints -
in the 22:55-56 UTC area.
I am going to work AO-16 that pass. That is, I will be transmitting 5 wats
from my HT into an omni antenna at 145.920, and tracking AO-16 for receive
using my Elk log periodic, handheld, at an FT-817ND to receive on UHF
sideband.
AA1PL banged into AO-16 from Rhode Island this morning, mobile. Anyone running
an omni antenna could have their signals reach both satellites, and those
stations pointing beams to reach AO-51 to the northeast have a chance to reach
AO-16 from the back side. That's what happened during both of the cross-
satellite contacts I've made so far, with WB9L and WA4NVM.
I find passes like these to be great opportunities for a very unique kind of
contact, so I'm going to see how things go tonight beginning at 22:48 UTC.
73 to all,

own W7LRD won the photo contest with a beautiful picture of his satellite

Nice going Bob!

Came home today after leaving the rig and the PC running all of last night and
today to find that Windoze had downloaded an update and restarted my computer
at some point. I forgot to turn on autosave on CPIX and completely forgot
about automatic updates being on so I got nothing!
Oh, well back to the drawing board.

The first picture copied during the 18:15 pass over the west coast (orbit
#56766) was a very nice view out the window, however the second one and both
of the two pictures copied during the 19:50 pass (orbit #56767) were blank
(dark blue screen, no image).

Hello All,
Just decoded my second set of telemetry from DO-64. So far I have heard
the 145.870 beacon every pass. Unlike during the first 3 months when it
was heard 1 pass in 10.
A question for the designers - are the two beacons separate transmitters
or just separate feeds to the one transmitter? The 145.870 is far more
reliable.

Hey folks,
Mike, WB9L, and I worked cross-satellite at 22:50 UTC. Mike was on AO-51 to
the northeast, while I was working AO-16 to the southwest. I heard some other
stations that I know were working AO-51, but didn't get any other contacts.
Both satellites were low elevation to me here in north Georgia.

minutes in) at http://www.innismir.net/article/49

It's counterintuitive, but through the magic of sampling theory, once
you sample at twice the maximum frequency of the signal you are
interested in you know _everything_ about it! As a practical matter,
most ham gear audio rolls off sharply above 3 kHz (and SSTV is lower
than that) , so sampling at a measly 8 or 11.025kHz rate is plenty.

Hi David,
yes, we have received your telemetry, thanks a lot for that!
the 145.870 and 145.930MHz are separate transmitters (which are only
combined just before the antennas), they are connected to the same
databus from the On Board Computer.
The drop out issue is not an issue with one of the transmitters
itself, but is related to the databus mentioned above, and it occurs
when large volumes of data are transferred. (And it is not dependent
on which transmitter is on).
Delfi-C3 is currently in basic mode, in which the datavolume no the
bus is relatively low since no payload data is gathered from the
payloads, in fact, the payloads are switched off, causing the dropout
issue not to occur (and it also does not occur in transponder mode).
This is why the downlink is still on when the satellite is over your
qth down under hi:)

Hmm. That's not quite true. Consider a signal at 4kHz, being sampled
at 8kHz. What you'd see is a triangle wave, if you were sampling at the
peaks of the incoming signal (if you were sampling at the crossover
points, you'd see no signal at all!). How do you tell what the waveform
of the signal originally was? You can't...
If you sample your 4kHz signal at 16kHz, you've got four points across
each cycle, so at least you can start to get an approximation. If the
input signal was a sinewave you might see a sample at a crossing point,
then a sample at a peak, then a sample at the next crossing point, then
a sample at the next peak. You'd get a roughly sinewave-y signal, if
you squint a bit.
When I'm recording digital signals or SSTV I use 44.1kHz 16-bit mono
.wav files. Disk is cheap, and the ISS doesn't fly over that often...

It's annoying how many really good pieces of software for amateur radio
are closed-source Windows-only things. I don't know about anyone else,
but I think that rather goes against the spirit of amateur radio. I'd
rather play with something hacker-friendly that I can take apart and
adapt than some big sealed-up box'o'tricks. I wrote a bunch of music
synthesis plugins and made them available free (free as in beer and Free
as in speech). Other people have sent me back little tweaks and
improvements, that I've folded back into the code. That way, *everyone*
gets a better toy to play with, and we all get to learn something.

At some point I must finish my rewrite (for copyright reasons) of the
Ensoniq Mirage sampling guide. It's got a great explanation of it.
