Gordon,
My station here is in a deed restricted area. I temporarily mounted a
Texas Potato Masher (similar antenna to the M2 Eggbeater), left it pointing
straight up, and made contact yesterday with Richard while running only 27
watts. Also received 70 percent of my photos with very little to no noise on
the image.

Hi folks,

Ok, I give up. What IS that thing in the last two pictures? I received the
same image this morning (station on auto pilot), and have been staring at it
since I got home. I'm pretty sure the dark square thing is a laptop screen,
but what is the dark round thing?

HI Gordon,

Don't rule out putting up a rotor and some moderate sized beams, even on a
rental...

What kind of roof do you have? I built a small "tower" from some scrap lumber
and metal bracing, and it's been serving me very well for nearly 10 years now.
See http://home.wavecable.com/~ko6th/DSC00031.JPG for an old picture of it (ca
2001).

The design is a 3-dimensional "T", built from 2x4 lumber. 8 feet wide at the
base, which goes horizontally across the roof with some rubber pads at the
tips, and 4 feet up the roof to a vent pipe. There's a 4 foot 2x2 vertical
piece that rises from the junction of the two pieces, and is braced to the
base on 3 sides. The whole contraption basically just sits on the roof, and
is kept from sliding off by lashing it to the vent pipe. My roof has a
relatively mild pitch (4 inches per foot, I think), so there's not too much of
a tug on the pipe. There's a 5 foot piece of steel mast pipe (Radio Shack, I
think) lashed to the vertical wooden part, and the rotor sits on top of that.
None of this is permanent; it can be unlashed from the pipe and dismantled,
with no trace.

I've had no problems with stability or wind, and it hasn't even broken any of
the roof tiles (cement shingles). Since the picture was taken, I have
upgraded the BBQ grill (for AO-40 13cm) to 30 inches, added a 23cm helix (AO-
51), and upgraded the 70cm beam antenna to 2x15. The 2m beam remains at 8
elements. The biggest problem is keeping the steel mast from spinning when
the wind blows hard, but I think I've got that fixed now too. We'll see what
happens this winter :-).

We own our house, so the last part of the puzzle may be a problem for you.
Getting the wires into the house. I mounted a power utility box (the kind you
put circuit breakers in) outside the room where my Shack is located, and
drilled a 2 inch hole in the wall to feed the wires through. Lightning
arrestors go in the box. There's a 2 inch conduit running from the box, up
the side of the house to the underside of the roof overhang, so water can't
get in. Perhaps you have some other means to snake the wires inside?

The whole setup is controlled by my computer in the shack, and I've gotten
some beautiful pictures from the ISS this past week. I also worked Richard
over the weekend. The ISS has been full quieting, from horizon to horizon.

The other antennas in the picture, by the way, are a 2 meter J-pole, and my
10/15/20/40 meter HF dipole strung over the wooden supports along the ridge.

Good luck!

Greg KO6TH

Has anyone considered putting the pictures together in sequence as a slide
show? With a short second or two per frame, we've got enough material to
almost make a movie.

Richard up and active during the 05.50utc UK pass this morning.

Keyed up for some while whilst tapping away on the keyboard then sent an
SSTV image, cw ID first followed by a "Goodbye from Space" message.

I had a great view of them streaking across the sky this morning while I
listened to their carrier and then some tweeting (SSTV). . .I heard them ID in
CW mode too which was a first for me . . . the signal was not as strong as on
previous passes either but I could see it . . . it was at 18 degrees and I
stepped out of the shack into the cold and there it was . . . of course I
have had a lot of experience seeing before so that was easy . . . . the sky
was clear and Orion was beautiful as it always is in the Southern Sky. Good
luck. I did not hear any voice QSOs. I worked them on the 21st when they were
about 25 degrees up and were S9. . .

Well that's it for me and the UK. Pass 12.09utc, the last visible here in
the UK before Richard leaves, and another picture to add to the collection.
Seems to have been a small problem up there as the first image started
before the TX keyed up and only a quarter of the second image was sent
before the TX went off.

Anyway great effort by all, thoroughly enjoyable.

Where did the last 10 days go?

Thank you.

The first image is *nearly* all there, judging by how much qsstv
attempts to decode. I can't get it to "lock" though so I've got an
interesting stripy pattern of lines. I'll play some more when I get
home from work.

I did hear an MM station calling, very faintly, near the start of the
recording - MM3YCG possibly?

To All,

Those of us who participated in Richard's adventure in Space, either
monitoring his transmissions, SSTV or direct contact felt, in some way
connected to his flight. I believe in the power of collective good
thoughts; let us all take a quiet moment to wish Richard and his crew a safe
return to earth in the Soyuz capsule and hope it's not a ballistic reentry!
And if you can, watch their return live on NASA TV, thank you.

I had found information on listening to the ARISS School contact last
week at the Challenger Center but can not find anything referencing a
site to listen in on the Armada Michigan contact tomorrow at 17:13 UTC.

I have a classroom with web access but no Echolink that would like to
listen to the contact.

Someone point me to the information??

Thanks,

Hi all,

Every time I post the ARISS announcements, you will see a file to grab that
has the complete schedule and any instructions for Echolink and IRLP.

Here is a part of the announcement I sent last night:

The complete schedule page has been updated as of 2008-10-23 04:00 UTC.
(***)
Here you will find a listing of all scheduled school contacts, and
questions, other ISS related websites, IRLP and Echolink websites, and
instructions
for any contact that may be streamed live.

Thanks,

Curt
