You probably get one of their first model where the CAT system cannot be read

I just hope your HRD is working as up till now only FT-847 super control is
working. It's like when you buy the first model of a new car
model you are stuck with issues time to time on the first version...

How can I start out on packet mode with the ISS using a TH-D7AG in a handheld
operation with an Arrow antenna?

Hello all. I have just started out in SSB satellites and I have been unable to
have a QSO? through any yet. I can always find the downlink frequency but I
can never find the uplink frequency. Is there any particular or easy way of
tuning in the uplink frequency quick enough before the Doppler moves off
frequency on the downlink. I'm using a Yaesu FT847 with a collinear antenna.
Ive been searching everywhere but have not found out any answers yet.....any
help would be appreciated.! 73 de MM3YCG.

First, the bigger the antenna the greater the reliability.
If you are using QRP, then try during off-hours, Local time M-F 9am ? 3pm,
11 PM ? 5 AM, Weekends 11 PM ? 5 AM. All other times can be considered peak
hours, when it will be harder (not impossible) for a QRP station to access the
BBS or Unrproto on ISS.

I did a google search today for a list of frequencies that I could enter
into both my 817 and 857 for AOS thru to LOS for AO-7....Not sure when I am
calling on a frequency where to listen for a call back....
I remember playing years ago when I first started radio with the Russian
sats on 10/15...I think RS11 and 12.......and finding the person calling you
when calling CQ....
Good luck, I need help as well..

What I do is to set my rig to where things would be without any Doppler shift,
then adjust the higher band (the uplink in this case) for Doppler, and it gets
me pretty close. Mid-band on VO-52's transponder is 435.250 LSB up, and
145.900 USB down; that's what you'd use when the satellite is exactly mid-way
in the pass, when it's relative velocity with respect to you is zero. But at
the beginning of a pass, it's moving rapidly towards you, so you need to
adjust. For 70cm, that's about 10 kHz, and because it's coming towards you,
you need to go LOWER in frequency to compensate for the upward shift due to
Doppler. So, I start out with my receive side at 145.900, and the transmit
side at 435.250, and it's pretty close. Send a few dits in CW mode, moving UP
to find zero-beat, and switch to LSB. On my Yaesu 736R I can then select the
Reverse Tracking satellite mode, and move around the passband looking for
someone else calling CQ, or just stay there any talk to myself for th!
e entire pass, like I did last night when nobody else seemed to be on :-(.
Once you find yourself, you will still need to compensate periodically (no,
make that continually) for Doppler. It's best to leave the lower band alone,
and just tune the upper band (the uplink for VO-52), unless you can computer
control both of them.
If I recall, for RS-10 I would set my downlink to mid-band on 10 meters, and
the same on the uplink, and then tune UP from there on the uplink until I
found myself. I know that seems to contradict what I just wrote above, but I
think it's partly because Doppler shift isn't as bad on 2 meters, and partly
because VO-52 has an inverting transponder, where RS-10 was non-inverting.
Anybody have the mathematics to support this?

In an terminal program on the port that your MFJ is on, use the ALT and 3
keypad number keys
alt192 alt255 alt192
If this problem is a regular occurrence, look for a file on the internet
called SETKISS.EXE and you can then run it in a batch file to turn kiss on
or off.
If you can't locate it on the web, let me know and I'm email you a ZIP file
with the executable, sample bat file and configuration files to set the port
number and baudrate need to poke these 3 characters at the TNC.

Hi Callum,
The following may help you out...It pertains to
FO-29, so you can practice there...
I devised this in 1986 to work FO-12 when we
only had separate radios....But the frequencies
are identical to FO-29...it can be worked with
very low power, and it has lots of bandwidth...
I call them my "no ditters"...
Go to:
http://home.san.rr.com/doguimont/uploads
and take a look at noditter.zip
It is possible to duplicate it from the pics, but
if you send me an sase, 9" x 12" for one ounce of
postage, I'll send you one printed, and simply a
matter of cutting it out. I'll include the
correct size sewing snap for assembly, they are hard to find...
I had a bunch of them printed, but can only find one at this time..
And you could devise one for VO52 with a little effort..
Let me know and I'll send you my address...

Wow, that was easy. I am eternally grateful! It works now. Not an
intuitive way of programming (IMHO); the documentation states "there
are 2 combo boxes in the upper left side of the menu. The upper one
contains the parameters that have to be set (Model, Baud rate), the
lower one contains the settings available for the selected parameter".
I read that, and read it again, and I thought it was referring to a
different version of SATPC32, since that description was not clear to
me, but your explanation was a lot easier to understand. I guess it
was just a long day, of putting back up my satellite antennas,
installing new preamps, the radio, etc. Must have made me dizzy doing
all of that in one day!
And Nate, thanks but I'm aware of how to change the baud rate on the
radio, the problem was with the software.
And Luc, I don't know what club you are talking about; I don't feel
that I'm stuck with a radio with problems. Mine was sold to the
original owner on December 2002, so I don't think it's one of the
early ones. As far as HRD, it works fine with my 847, but I can't get
the latest satellite 'test' version (1901) to see either my Kenwood
TS-2000 or Yaesu FT-847.

That option is only configurable when the rig is in SAT-mode. I.e. both the
main and subreceiver is active, for use as a X-BAND-RPT.
Then you can set either the ENC or DCS-coding for opening your repeater.
I have used that setting on my own 847 for testing purposes only. (Not
allowed to have unlicensed repeaters in my area)
Hope the info was usefull.
