That was quick. I was thinking of Satscape. Its good... give it a try. It
is available cross platform, and as i recall, it has a script on the site that
checks to see if you have a good version of java installed.

the URL is http://www.satscape.co.uk/iweb/Satscape/Front_page.html

Hope that helps.

Hi Mike, DK3WN

COMPASS-1 is not an amateur satellite http://www.raumfahrt.fh-aachen.de/

Last I checked Amateur Radio is science. I think as Radio Amateurs we
should be more then willing to assist the science community at large.
Asking for Quid Pro Quo is childish and silly and reflects badly on the
entire community.

The manual says it runs on Linux under Wine so it's not Java.
My guess is it's written with Borland's Delphi 5.

I've tried it in Linux, but if its in Java, it (should) work. Might want to
give it a try anyway, its pretty good, and I use it occasionally in Windows.

On my 0553EST pass the SSTV downlink audio was OK i succeed to send pictures
but i was alone on the sat. The transmitter is switching on as
soon as SSTV signal is received but when the carrier is shutting down i can
hear a very weak carrier just above the noise level i will try
to recorded it on spectran. It looks like some sort of beacon carrier who is
always on but at a very low power or some RF is leaking
out???

Hello all, if you'd like to take a trip back 25 years in time to the
AMSAT and packet radio activities of the early and mid 1980s, you're in
luck. I am scanning my collections of two old newsletters from that era
and placing them online with permission:

The AMSAT Satellite Report (ASR) edited by the late Vern Riportella,
WA2LQQ, and the ARRL Gateway newsletter on amateur packet radio.

With permission I am placing these pdf scans on my website. The
following ASR files are up now:

http://www.ka9q.net/asr-1981.pdf
http://www.ka9q.net/asr-1982.pdf
http://www.ka9q.net/asr-1983.pdf

http://www.ka9q.net/asr-1985.pdf
http://www.ka9q.net/asr-1986.pdf
http://www.ka9q.net/asr-1987.pdf

This covers from the first issue of ASR in 1987 through mid 1987. I will
finish the year 1987 and add more years when I find that batch of
newsletters.

I have scanned two volumes of the ARRL Gateway bulletin so far:

I will add more of these as I find and scan them. Preserve the past!

Does anyone know if there is a satellite tracking program that can run on

It would be nice to have it running always on my phone.

Hello All,

Last week, there was a flurry of postings about sighting
AO-51. The initial report was from Riverside, CA,
USA, 34.0 N 117.4 W, Elevation 250 meters.

After much checking, I believe what was actually seen
was an upper stage of Soyuz booster that launched
COSMOS 1184 on June 4, 1980.

In the original post, the observer reported the object
"directly overhead" at 6:10pm PST (0210 UTC
06 November 2008). The SL-3 rocket body
was 80 degs high at 6:10:39pm PST.

AO-51 on the other hand was 83 degs high a
minute and a half later at 6:12pm PST, so the timing
is a better fit for the SL-3 R/B. The SL-3 R/B is
about 12 ft. long and 8 ft. in diameter. It orbits
about 140 miles lower than AO-51.

In the summer of 2006, I made a visual sighting of
AO-7 using a 70mm "goto" telescope at 25 powers
of magnification It took many tries, but finally on a
near perfect 88 deg pass I spotted it. It was about
7th magnitude at is brightest and very tiny.

Since then I have made a couple of serious attempts
to spot AO-51 using 11x80 binoculars, and a 70mm
telescope and have not succeeded. My next attempt
will be with my 8 inch telescope, but not until the
weather gets warmer.

>From my personal experience, I do not think AO-51
would be visible to a casual observer. One must also
keep in mind AO-51 is in a polar sun synchronous orbit.
This is a very popular orbit for satellites to be launched
into and consequently there is a lot of stuff up there.

It's kind of like watching US-101 during the rush hour
and expecting to see a white car at 4:30 PM.
You'll see one.

Enter the lat/long for Riverside, CA,
( 34.0 N 117.4 W, Elevation 250 meters), plug in the
follow keps, set your clock to 0200UTC, 06 NOV 2008,
and see what you think....

I think a couple of "it is my opinion" or "I believe" phrases would go a long
way in softening some of these valid questions.

Dom:

I followed the link you gave above, but I couldn't see how it showed
that COMPASS-1 is not an amateur satellite. If you mean that it is a
commercial venture, I cannot see proof of this. If you mean that
amateurs are not involved, I cannot see proof of that, either. (The
absence of callsigns with the names of the people involved does not,
to me, prove that they are not hams. Websites like this have multiple
audiences, some of which might not understand or appreciate
callsigns.) There is a place for hams to contact, moreover, and a 'big
thank you' to those who have collected telemetry.

With all respect, I take the position that is converse to this:
namely, that COMPASS-1 *is* an amateur satellite, and therefore the
COMPASS team has assisted us greatly by building it. COMPASS happens
to be the only satellite that I have commanded from my groundstation,
operating on amateur frequencies, of course. In some sense, it is, to
me, more of an amateur satellite than, say, our much-loved FO-29 or
AO-51, or any HEO that might get launched. These, I assume, I will
never control; COMPASS I have.

> Is the COMPASS-1 scientific organization in Germany donating contributions
> to AMSAT-DL to build P3-E or not ?

If the economic hurdles are overcome, P3-E will be wonderful fun. But
I wonder if by focusing on it, we are in danger of not enjoying the
many amateur projects that are underway and of feeling embittered by
the financial forces that are, ultimately, out of the control of the
amateur satellite community.
