Bruce,
This is being done by Steve Dimse k4hg. Steve is working on app approval
from Apple for the application which ties to Findu and several other servers
I believe. More info is in the APRSSIG archives.
Looking forward to the Sat tracking app for iPhone as well!

A bit off-topic, but has anyone considered writing an application for
the iPhone that spits out position reports to the APRS internet
gateways? It would make a phone self-tracking.

Don't forget the Asus Eee Pc range too.
Even if you get the 4G Linux version,
it works very well with a cut down version
of XP, with no problems at all.
I have a 701 and cant fault it.

Hi,
A similar note book computer manufactured by HCL ( India) and using Windows
XP has been on sale in the UK for the past few months. It retails at
?169.00.
I have used it for tracking and presentations with a projector or external
display. But it has been most useful at many locations with an Arrow antenna
and HT radio for satellite work.
Also ideal for travelling whether it be by air, sea or land as it can be a
useful of way of storing information
and photo's to demonstrate etc. It does have hard drive but not a CD
device, but that it not a problem as I
also use memory sticks which are so cheap these days.

Yes, and make it part of the new "Universal Amateur Radio
Messaging" Initiative. We hope that someone will make
applications for all wireless gizmos used by Hams to be able to
link into the APRS system. See:

Phil,
thanks for the treasures and a great trip down memory lane.
I have a couple old copies of the Orbit magazine from 1982, if I scan
them can you find a home for them on your hosting I am limited to only
10 megs hosting on my ISP.
I find one thing amazing. 2008 we are talking about operation AO-7. 1982
they were talking about operating AO-7. I doubt many commercial
satellites can say the same thing regarding lifespans. We owe a lot to
the pioneers among us who blazed the trail for us. Now it's up to us
follow their lead and continue to make amateur satellite operating a
viable and vibrant mode of communication.

I have read about those Asus machines. I went with the Acer Aspire
One since it was what I wanted in a new laptop (smaller than my current
old Dell Inspiron 8200 Pentium-4 laptop) and a bit more, plus it was
in a store for me to look at before buying. The Wal-Mart stores are
apparently only stocking the versions of the Aspire One with 120Gb
or 160Gb hard drives (there are versions with 16Gb solid-state drives)
and Windows XP Home (there are also Linux versions). Three USB
ports and a couple of card slots - one for SD cards, another one for
many types of cards including SD - have come in handy, for adding
programs or data or copying pictures from my camera's memory card.
Not having an internal CD/DVD drive is not a problem. I have an external
DVD burner that can connect via USB, and I have already installed a
bunch of software including 5 different satellite-tracking programs. It was
nice to sit at Vancouver airport on Tuesday and, with a small USB phone
handset and Skype, be able to make free phone calls from there before
my flight home. The airport security in Phoenix initially thought it was a
DVD player, and asked me to remove my laptop from my laptop bag. It
was already out, taking up only half of the plastic trays intended for loose
items going through the X-ray machines.
I want to use this laptop initially to control my two FT-817s in the
field, since
I have a pair of Yaesu CAT cables and serial-to-USB adapters for those
cables. I also want to get a 6-cell lithium-ion battery pack for more
operating time. I get about 2 hours' usage with the supplied 3-cell pack,
not bad for the size of the pack.
73!

Hello everyone.
That Acer is a beautiful machine. I like the size of the micro laptops.
If a less expensive micro is desired, though, people shouldn't overlook the
older SONY VAIO PCG-505F series. I have one, and it is pretty capable. It
runs Windows ME (I actually like ME), and has a USB port on it. I have used
a 4-Port USB adapter to run 2 USB-to-serial cables, and it works quite
well. And you can get them on eBay for as little as $100.
Even though it has an older OS on it, its size and performance are adequate
for what I ask it to do. (Sometimes, the LATEST OS just isn't necessary
when all you need the PC to be is literally perform as a man/machine
interface)
Food for thought.

Great! And if I could be so bold as to suggest...
Maybe, since your APP will know where it is, and since it will
probbly know the callsign of the user, then would you also
consider having your APP send out a PACKET to first.aprs.net (or
whatever is the best APRS server) so that then anyone in ham
radio community can see where he is an can communicate with that
person by callsign alone?
This is part of the "Universal Amateur Radio Messaging System"
initiative to make it possible for hams to communicate with hams
by callsign alone, anywhere, anytime, using any device (ham
radio or cellphone, or whatever). For details, see:
www.aprs.org/aprs-messaging.html

Yep, and universal connectivity by-callsign has great potential
to keep our dwindling numbers in touch.
Thanks

With all that happening on the iPhone, the actual Amateur Radio part
seems a bit redundant.

I have a few old copies of "Oscar News" from the 1975-1978 period if anyone is

Perhaps we can get these historical copies of various publications together on

Like you, I would set as a design requirement that the app be able to
be turned off :-)

I would prefer to see it as integrated with other services, and
therefore more useful. Besides, the iPhone app would not currently be
practical for many common uses of APRS. If you really want vehicle
tracking, for instance, you're not going to buy a phone and put it in
the car. But for occasional use an iPhone tracker would be excellent,
and increase the general utility of APRS, including that which is
available through satellites.
Perhaps others had already noted this, but for java-based phones with
the 'JSR 179' API for GPS, there is this application:

Samsung Instinct; I think this would fit our APRS bill.
