Hi group,  I still struggling through selecting a radio for 2m and 70cm
satellite work. I already have a G-5500 and a 2m and 432 antenna from M-
Squared, and the computer interface, and pre-amps.  I'm thinking I'm starting
okay but now the hard part -the Radio.

A friend has a Yaesu FT-7800 unit he wants to sell me.  I'm all atwitter
thinking that two radios, one for each band, is better than one and need some
insight.

I can get some older ICOMs (471A and 271A) and was wondering what the group
thought of (1) two radios versus one; (2) the Yaesu FT-7800; and (3) the ICOM
471 and 271 as my base station.

I'm thinking I'll need CAT and I'm not sure the FT has it.

What is one to do? Advice solicited!

Hi Dave- I have used an IC 471A and a IC 251A for years.  The only issue is
with the older Icoms you need an outboard preamp for the mic and I don't
believe they can interface for doppler, at least I never tried.  They can be
had very reasonably.

Hi!

Thanks to John K8YSE for the Friday evening activity via AO-51
from DM51 in southeastern Arizona.  A new grid for my logbook,
and I'm sure for several others.  I was down in that part of
Arizona in May 2008, and except that time and tonight I
haven't heard DM51 on the satellites in the almost 3 years I've
been on.  John's trip earlier this week to DM31 in another part
of southern Arizona was also a good time to put another rare
Arizona grid into satellite logs.  Nice to see others trying to
activate unusual grids, allowing everyone a chance to put them
in our logs.

Tomorrow (Saturday, 22 November) afternoon and evening, into
Sunday (23 November) on the UTC clock, I will be out in another
corner of Arizona.  I will go out to southwestern Arizona for
grid DM22.  My plans are still to work several passes there.
I am planning to work one AO-16 pass, then two passes each on
AO-51 and SO-50, hoping to put many stations in my log and a
new grid (or, if I am on a grid boundary, possibly 2 new grids)
in satellite logs across North America.

DM22 has been on over the past few years.  There were a couple
of stations on from Yuma, Arizona, about a year ago working the
FM satellites.  Over the years, there has been some activity
from Mexicali on the Mexican side of the border fence, across
from Calexico and El Centro in California.  Apparently DM22 has
not been on enough for many to work, or to get confirmations
for that grid, via satellite.

As with many of my recent trips, it will not be necessary to send
me a QSL card to get one of mine for DM22.  Just e-mail me the
details of our QSO(s) so I can check that against my log and audio
recordings.  If you are in the log, you'll get a card.

And, after all my travels in 2008 up to now - at least 3000
miles/5000km by road plus a recent trip to Canada - portable
satellite operating is still fun.  :-)

I was in a similar situation several months ago. I had a pair of M Square
antennas along with the elevation rotor and a Ham M to turn the antennas. What
to do for a rig. Well I bought a brand new Icom 910H. A great rig. I use
SatPC32 software which interfaces to the Icom via Icom's interface accessory
(plug and play). You forget about your doppler shift once set up. I still
control antennas manually with both rotors. The Icom 910H is a top of the line
satellite transceiver. The only thing I would improve on it would be the RIT
control. It only offers a 1 khz range but that is no big deal.

It sounds like you are going to setup for the SSB satellites. They can become
very lonely. AO7 is  used but by a handful of USA stations (you will not work
Europe from CO. It suffers from some stations using excessive power and
generating trash up and down the band too. FO 29 and VO 52  (both SSB/CW) also
have a handful of operators.  No hashy trash because they are newer birds. AO7
is 34 years old and easy to trash it with hash if you use excessive power.

If you live on the East Coast of the USA you could work Europe. QRZ.COM shows
your location is in Colorado. Forget about working Europe. The FM satellites
are very popular with AO 51 being the most popular. It suffers too from some
poor operating at times. Most of the time it is OK. That early evening pass
can be bedlam. SO 50 is useful but not used very often enough. It works well
in my opinion. AO 16 is interesting but will be off the air very soon.

The reason I mention all of the above  is because it impacts your selection of
a rig. If you want to work a lot of grid squares which many of us do, the FM
satellites are where the action is located. You do not need an Icom 910H and
the money it represents to work the FM satellites well. You can do that with a
HT (hand held). There are other dual band 440/144 FM rigs available for a
fraction of the cost of an Icom 910H. The Kenwood TS2000 is a good rig but it
has a birdie on SO 50's downlink making it impossible to use that FM
satellite.

There is a big difference, in my opinion between the FM and SSB/CW satellites.
FM being used to its capacity on AO 51 and the SSB/CW birds suffering from
inactivity. Just a fact of life. Some may disagree with these observations. I
was on the satellites back in the 1970s and  came back in August 2008. I have
made QSOs with 15 countries and 200 Grids and 45 states in that time. I think
my intense 3 months of operating provides me with enough observations to make
these statements.

I am often asked why not more activity on non-FM satellites. My answer has
always been : 1) Doppler shift and 2) equipment. Unless you have software to
manage the doppler shift on 435 mhz  your signal will travel quickly across
the band. Some experienced ops can do it manually but they are pros. Equipment
for SSB/CW is relatively (emphasis) scarce compared to FM only rigs. You do
not need software to control Doppler shift on FM. . . . you can control it in
other ways.

To choose a transceiver depends on how you want to spend your time. If you are
preparing for the HEO (German venture) then go with the Icom 910H type rig. If
you just want to get on the satellites for the satellite experience you may
find an FM only rig is more suited for you. Of course since you are not
currently on the satellites ( my inference ) you would not have the benefit of
personal knowledge. I hope my observations are helpful.

Selection of the gear depends on how you are going to use it. If you do not
know that there are really two different roads to currently travel you could
be wasting your money.

Just my 2 cents and probably not worth even that amount of money.

Hi all!

I bought this HT a few months ago and still trying to find the time to
operate it! :)  I have a question about the full duplex operation.  From
reading the manual, it describes how to set up the duplex operation.
However, it doesn't describe how to set it up on crossband operation,
144/430.  When I want to operate on AO-51 using the 144 up / 430 down setup,
which band does the duplex occur, where the "D" is inserted next to the
frequency?  144 or 430?

The 'D' indicates which band is selected for DATA (eg APRS),
... and has nothing to do with duplex mode :-)

Regarding duplex: when you press duplex then the THD7 is
immediately into duplex mode, eg band A 145.920 and band
B 435.300 Mhz.

Select band A (a/b) if you want to transmit on A.
Select band B (a/b) if you want to transmit on B.

While you transmit on A, you still hear sound, coming from band B.
This way you can hear yourself back via eg AO51.
(you may need either external mic or a headphone in this set-up)

If you go to http://www.pa3guo.com, click on OTHERS in topmenu
and then DOWNLOADS in left menu you get sat-memories for the THD7
which you can quickly donwload via a PC into the THD7.

I was extreenly interested in your discovery that the UISS
program
decodes 9600 bps from GO-32 - (and AO-51).

I lost interested in packet radio in 1990 when I moved to Frei Island.

non-starter for me, 'm too far north.

However, I just checked - and I see that GO-32 'is' workable from my QTH
occasionally. I know how to modify rigs for 9600 bps but my question is ...

Is it possible to make some sort of relatively simple tuning indicator for
9600bps ??.

Tone decoder, centre meter, LED's, old 1 inch tube type RTTY indicator,
comparator system ... I can't find any information on the net. 1200 bps is
easy but
I believe 9600 bps is a different matter - (I am of course showing my digital
ignorance
here).

Do you have any references to any circuit diagrams Nader ??.

I know you can't actually *hear* 9600bps modulation, hence my request for
an 'indicator'.

I believe one way is that the white (background) noise goes quiet when 9600bps
is being received.

Confirmation - (or strong denials) - of this would be appreciated from the
digital
experts among us.

Any advice, tips, references or relavant URL's would be greatly appreciated.

I'm looking for some sort of 'INDICATOR' for 9600bps signals ... (if it's
possible).

program? If I understand correctly, if you use an uppercase "T" command, you
will get voice announcements periodically. Doesn't seem to want to work
here, am I missing something? No big deal, just curious!

Hummm, Guess I've been away a while also. Would this be the same 'predict'
program I had set up many years ago on a linux webserver to generate pass
predictions on demand ? Perhaps it has been updated to also do sound...
Could have some interesting possibilities...
Or maybe there is a Windows version these days ?

I succeded to decoded the AO-51 TLM and GO-32 TLM
using UISS?and AGWPE softwares with soundcard .
?
9k6 bps?seem works fine with soundcard !

some where I have read ,It is impossible to decode 9k6 by
soundcard ! but it seem ok with my RX experment from sat.
And in shack TX experement was ok between 2 setup using
a soundcard at one end and on the other end a TNC at 9k6 speed.

I used the Icom 275 and 475 for several years, and even with the CT-16
satellite interface, it was a chore.  Borrowed a 910H for Field Day 2001,
and was hooked.  I picked up a barely-used one on e-Bay for $810, and it was
probably the best ham purchase I've ever made!  Takes up less than half the
desk space, and is SOOOOOO much easier to work with than the 2 separate
radios were.  One of these days, I'll add the 23cm module.

I use SatPC32 for doppler (FAR Circuits CT-17 clone) and tracking control
(FOD-Track and G-5400B rotors), and have never looked back.
