Greetings,

Does anyone know of a pass scheduler program that produces satellite pass
times graphically for multiple satelites over say at least a day?
A ficticous 1/2-day example of what I am looking for appears below.
I know Bob's aprsdos does it but I don't run dos level programs anymore in
Vista if I can help it. I built an Excel spreadsheet to kind of produce a
graphical pass schedule but it is a painfully manual process to generate.

Thanks.

InstantTrack does, but it's a DOS program.

I'm by no means an expert on 9600 bps modulation, but the few times I've tried
it, I found that there is a different noise-like sound when you have it tuned
in, but it definitely does not go quiet. There's pretty much no way to
describe the difference - it's a bit softer, perhaps, maybe a little higher
pitched (less low frequency components). I expect you'll recognize it when
you hear it.

I checked the web page for VUCC, and it says no active satellites or
repeaters can be used for the award. Whoops, maybe I misunderstood but I
thought these SAT QSO's, once confirmed, would count towards VUCC.

InstantTrack does that.

What platform? Did you build it yourself or get a binary somewhere?

PREDICT does the voice announcements through a separate program called
"vocalizer". Do you have that program? It should be in the vocalizer
subdirectory of the Predict directory. You can run it standalone to see if it
works by itself:

./vocalizer 123 45

Vocalizer works on Linux by writing to /dev/dsp. Do you have such a device? If
you cat a .WAV file to it, can you hear anything?

Three new QSO's in three minutes today: WA4NVM (Anderson), KC9ELU (Mike),
WB2OQQ (Pete). All three gentlemen (and several others I heard after I was
done), were polite, did not transmit on top of each other, and exhibited
outstanding comms discipline. Sure taught this newcomer to AMSAT some good
examples of how to work the bird like a professional! Thanks, OM's!

You should also see a difference in received
signal strength too.

Swing your VFO either side of the frequency,
listen, you will hear a difference, and
watch your S meter.

Even without a mast head pre-amp you will
see and hear a difference.

An indicator on a suitable TNC would be the
receive DCD LED.

Nader,

The problem seems to come about when people use the same isolation
transformers as they do at 1k2. If you make direct connections, it usually
works. Being lazy, I still use my trusty DSP-2232 for 9k6.

Jim,

As others have mentioned, ITrack works on Vista machines, including mine.
You may need to fiddle with the window properties for sizing, but it gives
you exactly the sort of display you asked about. Depends on what your
threshold of pain is, I guess. ;)

Mark,
Welcome to the Birds and nice to work you.
I will look forward to working you again soon.

We all just hope A0-16 will stay with us for
a while longer. About twelve of us just worked
Patrick in DM22 (rare grid) on the last pass of A0-16.
Look for him on the FM birds the rest of tonight.

Hi John,

I have written a 9600 baud soundcard modem called
Willow which includes a 9600 baud signal quality bargraph
meter and an eye diagram. The bar graph will give you
a visual indication of the received signal (including
packets, good and bad, and even if only HDLC flags are
being received). The eye diagram should look like two
superimposed sine waves that are one hundred eighty
degrees out of phase.

Willow also has some helpful audio indicators that it
will display such as "No audio" or "Too loud" depending
on the audio coming into the soundcard.

And, there's a DCD light which will flicker or light
up solid yellow based on the signal quality.

It also demodulates the 9600 baud AX.25 packets. :-)

You can download a copy of Willow at

http://quagliana.com/willow/WillowSabins.zip

It's free. (The Sabins program is the AO-51 telemetry
program that comes with Willow. It's also free.)

No installation is necessary, just run Willow.EXE and
select "File/Activate Soundcard" to get started.

Let me know if you have any questions, and let me know
what you think of Willow.

I have to second the expressed opinions about the AO16 operation . . . there

why but no need to do that . . . those that frequent that satellite really are
the best ops I have come across in the satellite game . . . a pleasant

That's right. No voice announcements for DOS. There's really no standard way
to do it under DOS. The closest thing would be to use the SoundBlaster
hardware and hope that something similar is installed. Not nearly as easy or
as portable as the sound support under Linux.

Mark, you must have looked at Logbook of the World (LoTW) which
doesn't support VUCC at all.  You need to do it the old fashioned way;
collect cards and send them to an ARRL approved card checker. If you
are wondering when LoTW is going to support VUCC, here is a 'response'
I received from their president concerning this:

From: dsumner@xxxx.xxx
Subject: RE: VUCC on LoTW
Date: September 10, 2008 4:58:35 PM EDT
To: w4as@xxxxxxxx.xxx

Sebastian,

The reason for the delay is simply programming priorities. We realize
there are many members who would like to use LoTW credits for VUCC -- I
would like to myself!

Hi Patrick, thanks for being there, and for calling me back. That was
a very low pass for me on SO-50, just above 1 degree, but I heard you
in there. I'll be sending you a card naturally, but I just wanted to
sincerely thank you for making the effort! You were the only station
that I heard on there, during the approximately 20 seconds or so that
I had reception from the bird.

Ha! I didn't know that it would do that. It seems to work for me (version
2.2.1), on my OpenSuSE 10.2 system.

If you hit "i", for program information, what does it say about the Vocalizer?
It should show "soundcard detected"

Poking around the source tree, the vocalizer seems to be a separately compiled
program. Did you start from source?

Finally, have you fiddled with the system's mixer settings? That's usually
what trips things up on Linux.

Good luck, and thanks for the tip!

Hi Mark,

Satellite contacts do not count towards a "normal"
VUCC but there is a separate VUCC for satellite-only
contacts. For satellite VUCC, you can even count HF
contacts via modes A, K, and T.

73,
Tony AA2TX (VUCC-satellite #58)

Mark,

Here is the pdf file url. Read section 4. (b) and (c).
I hope that explains it for you. Also, look at (e), that
explains the rule for ROVERS giving us all those rare
grid squares. These rules are DIFFERENT from the
VHF rules for rovers and grid confirmations.

See you on the birds, Rick
