Another interesting event is to have either CW or SSB on satellites with the
exchange being your grid square and AMSAT member number. Something like this
was suggested in one of the AMSAT board of directors meeting awhile ago.
Should you not have a AMSAT member number, might I suggest you get one.
Support is critical, rocket science isn't cheap.

It's not the size that is worrisome to me. It's the power budget.
The normal
guideline for cubesats is 1W total power. Every milliwatt you use on
DSP
and the like is power you don't get to use for the downlink. It's not
hard
to chew up your budget with cpus. For instance, an ATMEGA168 (the chip
used on the arduino) is 250 microamps at 1.7v and 1Mhz clock rate. It
can
go even lower in sleep mode. Yet these chips are actually quite
capable of
doing a reasonable amount of work. A dsPIC chip might go from a few
milliwatts to nearly 100mw when churning out 20 MIPS. It's not clear
to me how much compute power we need, but if we are in the 100mw range,
we are spending 10% of our power budget.
(Note: I know nothing about the viability of any of these chips in the
space environment. I picked a couple of chips that I know something
about
as typical examples of what we can get on the power/curve. I also tend
to think in terms of software, since I'm a software engineer by
training.
Hence, software defined radios have some appeal. It might be more
reasonable to consider a less computerized approach.)

Huh ... owning only a really neat Arizona Scorpion all-brass paddle I just
picked up recently off eBay, I guess the straight key requirement leaves me
out.
And I guess using the up and down buttons on my Yaesu hand mic through the
keyer wouldn't count either.
Dang....

Pactor III is a proprietary protocol developed by SCS for the commercial
market
and is, I believe, patented, so developing a soundcard program to decode it?
would land one in legal hot water.??
?
So, short answer:? No, there are no soundcard modems for Pactor III.

Don't recall anyone mentioning FM birds... VO-52 and FO-29 are good
places to do CW (linear transponders). :)

Straight Key Night has been going for many years. Of course, if you
really did want to use CW on an FM bird, you'd just need to key an
audio oscillator (like a practice oscillator) into your mic input. ;)
But you'd be best using the linear birds. :D

We can set up a repeater on AO-51 with a SSB uplink for SKN, so CW would
work fine.
A request to ao51-modes@xxxxx.xxx for this will get the ball rolling....

I heard a few passes of AO-51 in L/U mode.? Most stations came in strong.? I
tried to get into the bird using about 8 watts out into a 23cm horizontal yagi
on an elevation rotor.? It was to no avail, though the bird was at 50 degree's
and higher.? I am working on a CP antenna for mode L.
Can those that worked this mode give me an idea of wattage, EIRP or antenna
for Mode L that you are using.? I was sure 7-10 watts would do from the Icom
910.? However, it may have been the yagi and the lack of CP.
Thanks

Depending on the length of your feedline, you should have been audible at
least. Doppler tuning is VERY important, are you set up for tuning the
uplink?
As a reference, I started out on L/U last year with 10 watts, ~3db of
feedline loss, and a 24 element horizontal loop yagi. I was ok at 20 degrees
or higher, with bad fades. I added a 60w amp and am good from 5-10 degrees
and up, with occasional fades noticeable.

Just to clarify, WinMor does NOT do, and is not compatible with, Pactor...
it is a REPLACEMENT for the expensive & proprietary Pactor modems (& the
additional $$ license required for Pactor III...)
