But do the orbits whilst it is still attached to the launch vehicle count?
And do partial orbits count (i.e. if it is launched from a site just south of
the equator in a northerly direction the first eqx would be only
after a very small portion of an orbit) or only complete orbits?

I have always wondered why so much discussion around noise figure
ignores the application of a SINAD meter in tuning receiver system
preamplifiers? Does not the SINAD meter accomplish the same goal without
having to disable AGC etc?

Let me point something out here. The PL tone on SO-50 or AO-51 does not
prevent QRM. It just makes it where you do not hear it. The offending signal
is still present at the satellite receiver, and will still block you out if
it is stronger than your signal.
Considering we have shut down several stateside Echolink nodes that thought
145.850 was a pretty good spot to operate, it's very important to have some
means of monitoring the uplinks. PL does a fine job of saving power, which I
suspect is it's primary purpose on SO-50, but it is actually detrimental to
preventing QRM on the uplink. Fortunately we identified these guys via
AO-27.
There are other effects of the PL that we have observed on AO-51 when
several legitimate users are in competition for the uplink. When collisions
occur, often none get through, and none of them know why because nothing
gets repeated so the situation continues. With an open uplink, all stations
can hear the logjam and hopefully enough stand down to unclog the uplink.
This is why we stress the importance of full duplex operation.
The issue is moot with SO-50 anyways...AFAIK the satellite is primarily
hardware driven. Considering it was an unexpected gift from the Saudis,
let's not look in the horse's mouth too much.
A simple way to solve this is to use U/V instead of V/U for future FM
satellites. SO-35 was a dream to operate, with a strong downlink easily
heard, and an uplink that swept itself clean due to Doppler shift.

I was told that while the bird(s) is still attached to the rocket body the
orbital count increases to all objects by 1 by each passing of the equator
in the south to north movement. In most cases the bird separates from the
body well before the first orbit is completed, yet when it reaches the
equator on it's south to north move, orbit number 00001 is logged.
As for determining the orbit number with a launch site south of the equator
it would be the second south to north equatorial crossing after launch since
the first crossing wouldn't count since it was just lauched and hasn't
completed a whole, or near whole orbit or achived orbit.
Now here's a kicker. If a bird is launched from the southern hemisphere and
it headed in a southerly direction, towards the south pole it would cross
the equator south to north on its first equatorial pass but won't count as
an orbit until the next pass. Which would technically mean the bird would
have to orbit, say 1.25 to 1.5 times before the first "official" orbit is
logged.

Jeff WB3JFS

No, it would cross the equator on a S to N direction around half an orbit
after launch.

Yeah. I keep them in machine readable form. I know I'll need a lot

I have a nearly perfect Icom IC 820-H for sale. Comes with hand mic and
manual. I do not have the original box. I would say this rig is an 8 out of
10. It's in great shape and the only reason I don't rate it 9 out of 10 is
that a previous owner switched out the N connector on the 70cm side for an SO-
239. I bought it used a little less than a year ago from a gentleman on this
list and now I've decided to go to an all in one HF and satellite radio. I'm
asking $450.00 for the radio. This includes shipping anywhere in the lower 48
states.
I also have an Icom AG-35 70 cm receive preamp for sale. I am asking 125.00
for it. This also includes shipping anywhere in the lower 48 states. If
someone would like the radio and preamp both I will sell them together shipped
for $560.00 Paypal only please. Contact me off list if interested. I will be
glad to provide pictures to any serious inquiries if needed.
Tnx and 73,

Sebastian,
I do not understand why requiring 2 different tones lessens QRM. If the
transponder is set to turn off after 10 minutes, why can't the regular 67 hz
tone be the trigger to turn on? Is it that bootleggers aren't smart enough to
send two different tones?

Hi Peter,
I think you will be disappointed with the results. The fluffy oak trees near
my house are practically opaque to 2.4 ghz signals, so I imagine that a solid
roof will be even worse. If there is space between the wood strips (vs a
solid wood decking), you might have some luck going just through the asphalt.
Water one thing that kills microwave signals, and wood is always wet.
(Concrete is another signal killer, in case that is another option...)
