Dave,

How much output power are you looking for on 2 meters?

Although it WILL duplicate your 471 (inasmuchas it's HF/6m/2m/70cm), if you
want something more than QRP power levels, I'll recommend Yaesu's FT-857D
because I own and use one, and love it. It peaks at 50 watts on 2 meters, 20
watts out on 70 cm. Since putting together my own 2-radio full duplex station,
I've been routinely transmitting on it and listening on an FT-817ND. I have a
second 817, and so can assemble a fully portable low-power all-mode satellite
station.

Others may disagree, but my experiences suggest you wouldn't be disappointed
with an 857. I bought mine used at a very fair price, and it's fully
functional with no problems I've yet discovered on the satellites or HF.

I hope this helps. Best of luck in putting your station together.

Hello there,

I am rather new to satellites and I am wondering when you contact So50 is
there a plus or minus setting or is it supposed to be a no offset? Otherwise,
I have everything else going and heard So50 just about 5 minutes ago.

Have a wonderful day.

I assume by offset you mean like a repeater offset. SO-50, like the other FM
voice satellites, is cross band. SO-50 listens on 145.850, and transmits on
436.795 or thereabouts. You also need a 67 Hz PL tone on the uplink.

No offset - but there is a 67.0 hz PL tone required.

145.850 up, with the tone, and 436.795 (+/- Doppler) down.

Something else to note about SO-50. It's receive antenna is a 0-gain quarter
wave vertical mounted on one corner of the satellite. It's transmit antenna is
another 0-gain quarter wave vertical mounted on another corner of the
satellite, and turned slightly inward. It transmits a quarter-watt into that
quarter wave.

I like to think of it as a little QRPp station in Low Earth Orbit!

This afternoon before leaving for work I changed the DNS entry for my
web page. It should take between 24-48 hours for all servers worlwide
to update the entry.

Hopefully I have moved everything properly. If you experience a hiccup
on the new site with any broken links, drop my a quick email so I can
repair it.

Does one log contacts through the ISS repeater as a SAT contact?
If so -- ISS does not appear to be one of the accepted names.

tonights 23:49 UTC pass over East Coast -- the downlink was very
choppy -- as if someone was keying their microphone on
and off randomly but not saying anything -- was anyone else hearing the
same?

I suspect it was the result of a lot of stations trying to get in. I heard the
same thing. Never made it from here in North Ga., though. So ... I'll just
keep trying. Congrats on getting the contact!!!!

Frank, Thanks for that ISS special event info, when I posted there had been
no activity, so that's good news! In fact, I heard lots of activity on the
ISS cross band repeater tonight, UTC 02:40 12-6-08, over San Diego, CA.
USA.......

Now that were getting some HAM activity on the ISS, I sure wish the person
that keeps up the ISS pass prediction program on NASA's site, could find the
time to update the pass prediction data.......... as of UTC 07:19 12-6-08,
its showing pass predictions for November 23rd instead of the current date

I may be reading things wrong, but it appears that this next pass for
VO-52 and FO-29 might offer cross-satellite contact...

Check me. VO-52 uplink 435.270 -> downlink 145.920
AO-29 uplink 145.920 -> downlink 435.820     I might be a fool .

I haven't studied this but a few minutes, but it might just be.
Wish I was better prepared to try something. Maybe I'll get on VO-52
at 435.270, and someone else can listen for me on 435.820 ... or thereabouts

I might have been close... You were right Tom.. Thanks !
I went up on 435.230 LSB, and heard myself on 145.913 USB,
( and worked WB9YIG EM67 !)
I tried listening around 435.88x - and heard myself, but not via FO-29.
- I had too much adjacent antenna interference. That don't count.

Maybe I can be better prepared next time.
Thanks /;^)

It seems the final determinant is the list of SAT_Names in the ADIF
Editor in the TQSL program. There appears nothing in there that would
reference ISS.

Is there any other input on this?

I found a couple of older references to the sat naming issue in the
archives but nothing for ARISS.

Thanks
