Amazingly, we are now 3/4s of the way there, with a D7 and two antennas from
three different members! You guys are great! We are still looking for one
more D-7 to complete the two loaner stations, and once the packages
including shipping cases and instructions, etc, are finished we will start
looking for more opportunities to loan them out to DXpeditions and other
deserving groups.

What kind of interface are people using between the radio and AGWPE??
I've tried my standard soundcard isolation unit but it doesnt seem to
send decodable packets and receives nothing from ISS even though I can
hear the signals well.

If the transformers are a problem in the isolation method, what is the
alternative?

I too use UISS and AGWPE for 1200 just fine.

I am seeing a very strong, full quieting carrier on 145.825. It appears
to be external to my house since it is fully directional using the
rotator. I expect it might be a fair distance away since it becomes in
audible off the back of the beam. (6 el cheap yagi)

Anyone suggest any commonly found sources at that freq?

Its not my router, I turn that off--and it is pretty weak anyway.

Because of the dozens of packets being digipeated by PCSAT, none
or maybe one or two have enough power to get heard. And often
those are PCSAT's own packets. PCSAT has no battery capacity to
maintain the 10W needed by the XMTRs. So a packet starts, but
before even the TXD is up, the battery is dead, and noone gets a
full packet.

I use the term "digipeated" here, meaning that the TNC heard it
and the TNC keyed the transmitter and send over the audio, but
the XMTR dies before the packet is hardlly begun. So you can
hear them, but you cannot decode them.

Whereas conventionally when we use the term "digipeated" we are
assuming the RF gets out the antnena at the XMT end...

Curt, I appear to be encountering similar results as you. 1K2 - excellent,
9K6 N/G

I continue to experiment with little success using Packet Engine Pro, UISS ,
sound card and FT847. The FT847 has 2 options - a data IN/OUT jack and a
PKT 1200/9600 mini-din port. The 3rd is the external speaker and Mic jacks
which I ignore as an option. Further, I've used 2 methods to interface the
radio and sound card.

- SignaLink SL1+ to isolate the PC sound card from the radio PKT 9k6 port
- other times a direct connect between the sound card Mic IN/audio Out and
the radio data In/Out

So 2 ways to interface to 2 different radio in/out connections with rather
short passes to fiddle with audio levels on the RX side to get a decoded
signal and on the TX side to trigger a PTT.

Any combination of the above works wonderfully at 1K2

A further complication is the unknown viability of the sound card to handle
the 9K6 well enough to not distort packets and allow the software to decode
the packets. For now I'm using a Dell notebook. In a few days I may revert
to a desktop where I can try various sound cards including the one on the
motherboard.

The net result of this 9K6 experimenting is frustration and reversion to the
goode olde PacComm NB96 that works every time and all the time with any dumb
terminal program, stays hardwired so I can check for the resurrection of
GO-32 and is one button push away from 1K2 operation using Wisp32, UI-View,
WinPack or whatever. UI-View, WinPack and UISS work with AGWPE. UI-View,
WinPack and Wisp32 work with regular comports or USB virtual comports.

I hate the idea that with today's fast processors that we have to revert to
a hardware solution ( TNC ) instead of a "all software solution". But I
don't mind continuing with this experiment. We're facing a long cold winter
in EN19 and the shack is nice and warm and the rotator hasn't frozen up yet
:-)

At least there are fewer stations than there were earlier.
Apparently not enough, but at least the word IS getting around.
Here are a few that did make it recently.

Hi Alan:

Yep..I do alot of digital site recording of classical music using
off-board A/D boxes. I can tell you that, even great laptops have
really BAD sound handling ability. The stock AC97 system can be very
noisy and I'm sure that would play havoc with 9K6. An option for
getting the sound card to work is to let 2 computers talk to one another
via their sound cards. I did this early on learning the 1200 baud
system and it at least verifies most of the system without using up
prime "pass" time.

You at least have the data ports on your radio--mine are just plain old
mobil FM rigs so they might never work.

Thanks

Curt

Alan (VE4YZ) said :

...short passes ...goode olde PacComm NB96

I'm reminded of a comment made by Nader (ST2NH) not so long ago,
suggesting local testing between two of your radios to iron out kinks.

It sounds like you already even have one side of that link up and runnable
with your NB96 old-mode hardware... Thats a great start I'd think.

Better than where I'll start with two (un-tested) soundcard solutions
running back to back via two (un-tested) radios.
(That probably explains why I haven't yet started)
(The 9600 testing may well conclude, before I even get started ...)

I wonder if my soundcard is good enough to record some downlink audio.
Hummm, probably more of the same confusion/frustration.

Good luck, be sure to let us know what works...

Thanks Alan and Curt for the comments. Although none of this discussion has
addressed Dave's original email I will pursue the 2 radio terrestrial
testing method. This reminded me that I have an old TEKK 9k6 UHF rock bound
data radio in the junk box somewhere which I used for years on the TCPIP
44.*.*.* network via a JNOS gateway. Ah, those were the days when only the
amateurs, universities and military knew what the internet was all about -
telnet, gopher, ftp in text mode only... But I digress...

Thanks again for reminding me that I had the option of the "2 radio
terrestrial test"

With the wx getting more "cabin feavorish", the voices in my head are saying
we should have an impromptu AMSAT contest where the exchange would be your
grid square and your AMSAT member number. Something along this idea was
suggested by a member of the BOD of AMSAT some time ago. Lets see if this
idea has any traction.
