I've always gone the 2 HT route, mainly because I have never owned a
full duplex capable HT. I'm another who is a big believer in full
duplex operation on the sats. It gives you a LOT more insight into
what's happening on the bird. I can operate without full duplex, but
I prefer not to.

All of my contacts (http://log.thathamkid.com/view.php?ViewCall=KE5GDB) have
been made on a FT-60. It doesn't have the capability of full duplex, but
it's still an awesome radio. After having it for about 2 1/2 years, mine is
still working fine despite the wear that I've put on it (numerous drops,
scratches, and water).
I recently have been experimenting with 2 FT-60's (one is my dad's) for full
duplex, and it seems to be working OK. I still have some more tests to do,
but it should work out to be just fine.

I do the same thing with my 2 FT-60's in full duplex (I just got it working
tonight). I have a pair of headphones and my iPod with the iTalk module to
record all of the contacts I make. I find it a lot easier to do that then
trying to scribble calls as I go.
Bill, if you're looking for a full duplex radio, I don't really have many
suggestions, but you mentioned having a VX-2. The VX-2 has a VERY nice
receiver, so with the VX-2 for RX and a FT-60 for TX I think it'd work out
pretty nice for you.

Hi Guys,
I am not being negative and "Yes if Only" - However there is more than
the provision of amateur radio equipment and antennas to consider.
It would not meet with the original objectives for the spacecraft - Apart
from the consideration of the rubbish
on board it would become another piece of "junk" in space and therefore a
hazard especially when it starts
to fall into the orbit paths of other spacecraft.
Someone would have to be responsible to monitor and control this aspect
which among many other considerations would I regret mean it would be
rejected.
Don't forget that this is only the first of a number
of these spacecraft to be launched and the past few weeks with the dummy
runs being used as part of a
procedure for the future.
This area alone must have cost a significant amount time and money for the
Safety Cases,Risk Assessment, documentation ,training etc. etc. etc.
I regret to say I do not think that we would have any positive agreement for
a re-run of these costs just for the
sake of amateur radio.
I am sure that the "SuitSat" team and others participating in some of our
projects could confirm the way things have changed since our earlier days.
The
process and current difficulties in time and costs now do
mean it is very hard going for our hobby sad to say.
Ideas are always worth listening to and also prove a useful learning curve
to all, so thanks for your proposal
and I really do wish that it could be adopted.

The schematic for the rotor and controller is in the back of the G5500
manual. If you don't have it and can't download it from Yaesu I'll scan it
and email it to you.

Hi Bob,
I ordered the fiberglass M2 boom from RANDL.com, item HDFGBOOMKIT
(http://www.rlham.com/cgi-bin/shop/modellookup.dbw?MODEL=HDFGBOOMKIT);
however, is a bit pricey at $184.95 plus shipping. I have read where other
homemade methods have been used with success.
Are you going to use both azimuth and elevation rotors or just azimuth?

Pretty simple to make a fiber pole functional equal.
use a pc of schedule 40 PVC pipe. apply a couple of wraps of 5 oz glass
cloth using epoxy or polyester resin. The glass will prevent the PVC
from sagging and adds great strength.

Hi Tyler, KM3G
Here is the description of a serious and simple Noise Figure Meter that you
can build with easy
http://gref.cfn.ist.utl.pt/cupido/noisefm.pdf
And here is the schematic diagram
http://gref.cfn.ist.utl.pt/cupido/nf_sch.gif
I use this Automatic Noise Figure setup with success.

I had good luck with Schedule 40 and a broomstick, as well. Run the
broomstick through the PVC and bolt it twice on each end such that each end
has two bolts running through it in a 'cross' configuration.
It's not as light as fiberglass but the rigidity is great for my 2x8element
array 25 feet off the ground.
