I have had no luck uplinking on Mode L. I even followed a suggestion to
increase TX delay to 999 ms and tail time to 100 ms to give the bird extra
time to grab me. However, 10w from my 910H on 23cm with a single twisted
helix 1.2G antenna does not cut the mustard. I also have had very limited
success on the 70cm downlink grabbing the DIR. All in all - a bust.

Hi Jeff,

I would not swap your 6 el. Yagi for any eggbeater (neither the original M2
one nor the homebrewed eggbeater II design).

I've build an Eggbeater II and it was very "nully" due to the many lobes of
the antenna. I had it mounted about 20ft over the ground on the roof top and
connected to a low noise GAsFET preamp. I removed it again after only one
week of operation and was quite disappointed and went back to my homebrew
ground plane.

Furthermore the antenna is only circular overhead and horizontally polarized
towards the horizon. Even the simple 1/4 wave groundplane + preamp gave me a
better reception of 70cm LEO birds at low elevation angles and much less
nulls.

Generally I found vertical polarisation to work better most of the times
with most kind of satellites (although by theory when receiving circular
signals this shouldn't be the case - but you can centrainly confirm that
with your yagi)

If you look for an omnidirectional antenna I would give the parasitic
lindenbald antenna a try as described by Tony AA2TX in the AMSAT proceedings
2006 and 2007. I haven't tried it yet, but I expect it to work even better
than any Eggbeater design (maybe someone ever compared such antenna types
and could report here?)

Oscar DJ0MY

Hello Jim,

I routinely get the downlink quite well using an 8 element 70 cm yagi, with
a pre-amp at the antenna, fixed elevation, tracking in AZ . The digital
transmission is currently about 500 mW, but you need a good S/N ratio to
decode the data, even if your modem locks on to the clock.

The AMSAT Digital Guide has a very good description from actual experiments
by Mike, N1JEZ on what is need in a 1.2 GHz uplink signal for digital
operation on AO-51. GO-32 also has a 1.2 GHz uplink, but it has also needs
more signal than you are delivering.

The downlink reception is pretty easily and inexpensively corrected. I am
not sure how the increase in TX delay time to a second will help your uplink
as you didn't mention an amplifier needed to switch in.

A good deal of the enjoyment for many of us is the challenge of getting
operations on the satellites and the multiple modes they present. I am sure
the digital guide would be of assistance to you.

Gould, WA4SXM

I think we are ready. The Houston AMSAT Net is now available as a
Podcast. You can subscribe to

http://www.amsatnet.com/podcast.xml

Please let me know off the list if there are any problems. Net #734 and
#735 are available. They will remain online for 4 weeks then roll off.

You can always download and listen with an MP3 player at
http://www.amsatnet.com
or the direct link
http://www.amsatnet.com/audio.html

Thanks to Dale, WD0AKO, for doing the encoding and creating our album art.

I have submitted the link to iTunes but who knows if or when they will
pick it up. And...off our website, it is commercial free.

Hi All,

Simple question about the manual...

On page 19 there is a statement:

"....transmission can only be transmitted on the MAIN band - not on the SUB
band. In the case of satellite operation, the SUB band is used for the
transmission band."

This seems to be contradictory - could anyone tell me what it actually means/

many thanks

Hi Graham,

Nice to hear from you.

This is what I understand about the IC-910H. In non-satellite mode, the
MAIN band is on the top of the LCD and the SUB band is at the bottom. This
means that TX can only occur on the top (MAIN BAND) and RX is possible on
top (MAIN) and on the bottom (SUB).

However, if satellite mode is engaged, this is reverse. Meaning the MAIN
band (where you can TX) is now on the bottom of the LCD display. And the
SUB band (where you can only RX) is now on the top of the LCD display.

Nothing very much different, other than they are the opposite in satellite
and non-satellite mode. One thing that I have learn is that, when using
WISPDDE client + IC-910H, when not in satellite mode, the RX (downlink)
comes on top (as the main band) and the TX (uplink) comes on the bottom (as
sub band). Then when PTT is keyed, you transmit on the downlink instead of
the uplink. This forces me to use the satellite mode even for non-linear
transponder satellites such as AO-51 and GO-32.

Hope this helps. :)

Sion Chow Q. C.,
9W2QC.

Hi Graham.

It is contradictory and its right!

With the 910 in "normal" mode you can only TX on the main band not the
sub band.

BUT..... when the radio is in "Satellite" mode it will TX using the SUB
band and the main band becomes your RX downlink.

hope that clears things up :)

cheers

Tim

In non satellite mode... the top freq is the one you are transmitting on.

In Satellite mode, you are transmitting on the bottom freq and recieving on
the top freq.

Yes slightly confusing.

Graham

Yes thats how it operates. In non sat mode it only TX's on the main
band. In sat mode it TX's on the sub band. Trick is to have the right data
cable to work in both modes for digital work.

HQ8R SWAN ISLAND DXPEDITON
SATELLITE COMMUNICATION

Florida AMSAT Net, on the 443.1 MHz N4HHA repeater, On the NI4CE system of
repeaters and over Echolink at KG4YZY-R, node# 4429, on Thursday April 10th
at 19:30 ET.

Following a Preamble and announcements, Bill Dzurilla, NZ5N,
http://www.qrz.com/nz5n will present his adventures to, during and from the
recent Swan Island Dxpedition which ended about March 27.

Web site: http://www.hondurasdx.com/

Please email questions you would like to ask Bill to: David Jordan, AA4KN,
at: aa4kn(AT)amsat.org Dave is only accepting questions sent PRIOR to net
time.
Additional questions will be allowed as time permits.

This will allow reduction of duplicate questions and also allow David to be
heard by everyone via the repeater. Please include your Name and Call Sign.

Credit of the Name and Call Sign will be given over the repeater for those
questions sent to David.

During prior events, many mobile units were unable to present a consistent
r.f. signal into the repeater. Also a more smoothly run net will occur by
reducing the number of "overs" etc.

Hello BBS Readers,

This Saturday, April 12,?is the Raleigh, NC hamfest--RARSFest.??? I have made
all of the arrangements for the space/table/AMSAT goodies, etc. and have a
committment from Barry Baines WD4ASW to assist.? Two others had hoped to help,
but have circumstances which prevent them from helping afterall.

I know that this is short notice, but sometimes that works out best for some
folks!? If you are willing and able to help with the table on Saturday, please
contact me directly off the list at??? n8mh(AT)amsat.org ?? No experience
necessary, on the job training is available at no charge :)?
