AO-16 Status Update

April 10, 2008

?

Hello All,

?

AO-16 continues to operate well in its new voice configuration as follows:

Uplink: ????? 145.920 MHz FM

Downlink: 437.026 MHz DSB (LSB and USB)

?

After several months of continuous illumination, AO-16 is again experiencing
short periods of eclipse. Recent telemetry indicates that the spacecraft
temperatures are decreasing a bit as a result.

?

As the eclipse periods of AO-16 continue to increase in the coming months, we
must continue to monitor the spacecraft power budget. ? Spacecraft control is
now limited to the Microsat Boot Loader (MBL). ? Therefore, the power budget
of AO-16 is managed by varying manually the output power of the transmitter.

?

Users of AO-16 are encouraged to report any aberrant operations by either
posting to the AMSAT-BB or by emailing the command team at ??
n8mh(AT)amsat.org ?? ?Aberrant operations? might include the following: ?
complete loss of signal from the spacecraft or significant change in the
transmitter frequency.

?

We are grateful to see significant activity on AO-16!

?

On behalf of the command team,

?

Mark L. Hammond, N8MH

It looks as if there will be at least one other Special Call active on
cosmonautics day RS3X to quote:-
'RS3X will actively FM / SSB / CW through AO7, AO16, AO27, AO51, FO29, SO50,

Hi AMSATs,

It has been a long time ago that I have been active "on-air", and here on
AMSAT-BB. Reason is to little time, and because of that I choose to improve my
home lab and spend my late after work hours there, and not in front of the
rigs hihi...

It is very interresting to see the work of the Delfi team, and they are now on
the place where I was in 2005 with the Indian HAMSAT (VO-52) :)
I can tell you its a hot place, in matters of sun and also hot (spicy) food
hihi... I wish the team a good launch, and I will spend some more time to get
my station ready to receive Delfi after launch...

I have not been active "on-air", but even more active with designing some new
transponders. The reason I had to improve my home lab is because I wanted to
design a very small transponder, that would fit easily in 1-cube satellite.
With 0805 SMD this was even not possible anymore, so I went even to smaller
sized SMD. (I guess the next step is my own made chip hihi).

My final design ended up in a 7cm x 7cm x 0,4cm prototype version.
I guess this is small enough to fit in a cubesat :)
Some details:
Mode-B, Power supply 3.3V, >500mW PEP out, 30kHz Bandwidth (flat), with AGC,
CW beacon incl, ~200 grams weight.

Now I am fixing up my design to get it from a home made prototype into a more
profesional "flight" version. My idea is to make several of these
transponders, and make them also available for other (cube)sat groups.

However, now I am stuck with the question what the standards are for mounting
hardware in cubesat structures.

I don't have a cubesat (for the moment) because they are not in the cheap
price class for me as a ham. On the other hand I have no experience in any
cubesat project, and don't know all the ins and outs.

Maybe some cubesat expert can give me an idea how to make my final PCB (screw
holes, sizes) in an efficient way to have my 7cm x 7cm x 0.4cm fit in other
cubesat projects, in case some group will be interrested.

Beside my analog transponder I also like to have a pacsat system, to have it
together in my future own cubesat. The pacsat system is an efficient system
and I think its worth to have it back again.

Does anyone know if there is a group or ham that made (can make) such a system
in cubesat format ? With todays small sized, low voltage, high speed and high
amount of memory processors it should be no problem for a digital guru I
guess. (I mean the pacsat system like KO-23/25 alike).

Thats all AMSATs,
Enjoy the sats, and listen for Delfi... the next linear transponder :)

Me too.
The last satellite QSO I had was with Vern, WA2LQQ on Oscar 8.

Mark:

Many thanks for the work it is taking to keep AO-16 up and running. It
is definitely a learning curve over straight FM birds. Makes a nice
bridge between pure FM and pure SSB birds.

Thanks,

A couple of minutes ago the launch preparation team has arrived at the Delft
University after an exhausting 24-hour trip from Chennai. We apologize for
the lack of updates in the last 5 days but there was not much too tell on the
two days off, and those were followed by a couple of extremely busy days in
which we performed the final steps of preparing Delfi-C3 for launch. Delfi-C3
has been placed in its X-POD and left in the cleanroom at Sriharikota, giving
the launch team mixed feelings about leaving without it.
Now that we are back home we can say that all the checks and tests have been
performed to satisfaction and we are convinced that Delfi-C3 is completely
ready for a launch. Right now we will start to focus on the launch and early
operations phase but we?ll keep you updated

Although the CubeSat ICD specifies the external dimensions, there is no
standard size of PCB or mounting scheme. Each university will come up
their own internal arrangement, mounting scheme, and internal
connectors, when designing their structure.

Some groups will use the off-the-shelf CubeSat Kit from the folks at
Pumpkin.
	http://www.cubesatkit.com/
They may buy the Pumpkin structure and/or electronics, so they will
design their custom modules to be compatible with that. So, if you
wanted your transponder design to be ready to drop-in to a CubeSat Kit,
you should follow their board-outline and mounting points. You can get
the specifics from the CubeSat Kit Breakout Board Datasheet:
http://www.cubesatkit.com/docs/datasheet/DS_CSK_Breakout_Board_711-00380-A.pdf

The folks at The Stensat Group, designed a 2m/70cm transceiver for
Libertad-1 and their fit theirs on a Pumpkin CubeSat Kit form-factor
PCB. See http://www.stensat.org/satellites.htm

I hope you find this information of use.

Very cool Bruce! It's working great in iTunes here.

For those unfamiliar with how to add a non ITMS (iTunes Music Store)
podcast to your iTunes software (on either Windows or Mac, should be
the same...) ...

Go to the top of the screen to the menu.
Click on Advanced.
Click on "Subscribe to Podcast" in the menu.
You'll get a box that says "URL:"
Cut and paste Bruce's URL above -- http://www.amsatnet.com/podcast.xml
-- into the box.
Click OK.

You're done. You should now see the podcast in your list of
subscribed Podcasts in your Library on the left side of the screen.
Depending on your settings (see below) you'll either get automatic
updates of the Houston AMSAT Net every time Bruce releases one to the
server, or you'll have to go to the podcast in your library and click
on the Update button.

Now some thoughts on settings -- these apply to any "podcatcher" type
software, of which iTunes is just one of many -- but this set of
instructions and comments below is focused on iTunes, since a lot of
people have it and may have never used it for podcasts before...

If you normally go a long period of time without LISTENING to any of
the downloaded files, iTunes tries to help the podcasters out with
bandwidth by NOT downloading or checking the XML file... you can right-
click on the title of the podcast and clicking "Update Podcast" if you
ever get that far behind.

You can also be "nice" to Bruce's server by going into your
Preferences for iTunes (iTunes Menu, Preferences) click on Podcasts...
then:

Check for New Episodes: [Set to as low as you can for your podcasts
you listen to -- if they publish weekly, once a week. If you track
some that update Daily, Daily. Avoid "every hour" if possible.]

When new episodes are available: [Choices are Download All, Download
the Most Recent One, Do nothing -- choose as appropriate, keeping in
mind that if you're not going to listen to EVERY one, and/or you have
no other podcasts... manual downloads are "nicer" to the server
bandwidth.]

The last one is a setting for how long you want to keep your downloads
and you can decide on that... it doesn't really affect the server.

Just a little "iTunes settings" intro for anyone trying it out for the
first time -- so you know where to find all those nice settings.

Sitting here listening to #735 on the laptop! Cool stuff. Of course,
#734 and #735 will also download (if I don't delete them after
listening to them) into my iPod whenever I get around to "syncing" it
with the laptop next. Yay! Something else interesting to listen to
on the long commute! (Sorry ClearChannel, you can keep your boring
talk show hosts... I'll be listening to the Houston AMSAT Net!)

:-)

Follow-up...

See? I already learned something -- maybe I missed it here on the BB,
but in #735 you have the announcement that SuitSat II is under
development!

Cool! Didn't know that! (Looking forward to it!)

Dear Folks,

Does anyone out there have any experience in setting up MacDoppler to
work with MacLogger?

I have tried everything I can think of and can't manage to make it
work. I have been told that a file called 'log.dat' should appear in
my 'MacDoppler Folder'. As there didn't appear to be any 'MacDoppler
Folder' anywhere on my computer, (only the MacDoppler application), I
created one under my 'Documents' folder. But nothing appears in it
when I try to log from MacDoppler.

Also, does anyone know of a program out there designed to log
satellite contacts, as MacLogger is not really designed for the info
I normally manually record for my satellite contacts.

Thanks,

Dear Folks,

While I'm at it, has anyone had experience using MacDoppler with the
IC-821?

I find I am unable to manually tune the radio while using the MacD
program to control my frequency(cies) for doppler shift. I can tune
the radio while holding down the button above the 'VFOs Locked' box,
but when I release the button the radio returns to the previous
frequency.

I have been working around it by finding myself, noting the
frequencies and then manually adjusting the frequency with the uplink
and downlink arrows, but this is neither convenient or quick.

(It seems to me that I should be able to manually tune the radio and
have the program follow it, as happens in SATPC32.)

Thanks,

Dear Folks,

Re my earlier problem on Logging from MacDoppler.

After much poking around I found that the 'log.dat' file created by
MacDoppler does not automatically save the file to 'the MacDoppler
folder' as stated in the manual, but it saves it in my 'Applications
Folder'.

So, problem solved, sort of.

I don't suppose there is a way of changing where MacDoppler puts that
file, at least it's not evident to me. So I guess I'll hafta figure
out a way to move the 'log.dat' file to a more logical location using
OSX.

Any suggestions?
