I reloaded my machine with Debian 4, backed from ubuntu 8.04.CPU load is
normal again and compressed forwarding is working. Note with this
cpu(crusoe) I did not have to build a new kernel, the one from the most
recent debian site seems to be working.
I have one issue though, when I try to forward out on my HF port of my Kam
nothing happens.
I have everything using the ax25 ports. All ports are working using the
ax25 tools, the bbs is even accepting
calls on the HF port of my kam. issuing a "fw callsign" for a station on
the hf port doesnt make it to the radio.
Including port.sys below in case anyone might have a clue. My forward file
uses port D in the definition for HF port. I assumed this was correct
since the other radio ports are forwarding okay.
thanks for any insight.

Bob,
Have you tried what Bernard suggested to start the kernel without SMP?
The stock kernel with my Debian 4 included SMP support, and Bernard
reports issues with fbb and SMP.
I'd try loading the kernel without SMP support and see what happens.
We are starting to see some strange issues evolving due to kernel
changes. Post 2.6.18 seem to be badly infected with problems for ax25
and fbb.

I am running a 2.6.18-6-686 kernel. If netinstall kernel is an smp kernel
then that is what I am running. I have compiled a 2.6.18.6 set without
smp but I was not seeing any of the other symptoms I had with ubuntu so
just wasnt convinced that non-smp kernel would fix me.
When I was on ubuntu 8.04 and a non-smp kernel I was seeing this same
issue with the hf kam port but since I was also dealing with high cpu
utilization and compression not working the hf port was the least of my
concerns.
it will probably be tomorrow night before I try my kernel. We have to
leave to pick up the kids shortly from the AMtrak station about an hour
away. They went with the grandparents to washington DC for vacation and
have been gone for 10 days. It will be late time we get back.
I was just hoping that given the symptom it might be a user configuration
error on my part that was keeping outbound connects from working :(
thanks
bob
