I was interested in Bob,VK6BEs selection of satellites, very useful
especially if you like sports as he does.
It sparked off a little memory of being in a shop in the 1980s where they
had on sale, satellite receivers which were quite large and were tuned by
three knobs. One tuned around for the stellite you wanted, the second
tuned in the vision carrier of the prog you wanted on that sat, the third
tuned in the sound, this could be either mono or stereo or even one of a
selection of languages. I didn't buy one as they were very expensive and
no one I knew did.
I do wonder what happened to them.
By 1990 we had a few people on the Sky boxes with progs from the Astra
satellite. You selected the channels you wanted by push buttons, remote
controls came later, after you had tuned in which ones you wanted and set
the polarisation of the LNB.
I was disgusted by the number of repeats and managed to find a flaw in
their one year agreement and made them take it out after less than six
months.
I know I mentioned having a dish on a pole later on but that was on a
rotator giving me various free to air channels. I don't believe in paying
for rubbish. The dish and STB were second hand and free so it cost nowt.
Does anyone remember the o;d continuous tuning sat boxes I mentioned and
what happened to them ?
