As a schoolboy I read of the experiment performed by Sir Michael Faraday
(after whom the Farad is named) in front of his students.
He would take a jar lined inside and out with foil. Charge it with a
Wimshurst machine or similar and then dismantle it, putting the jar and
two pieces of foil in three seperate drawers, often for months. On re
assembly, it was possible to discharge the jar, giving a large spark.
His question was "where did the electricity go ?"
I remember learning about 'dielectric stress'. Yes capacitors can be air
spaced and also work in a vacuum but this doesent stop the dielectric
stress effect also being valid.
Perhaps our correspondent will go on to explain the electrolytic capacitor
(or download it from the 'net)
