Forecast Discussion
Steady rain and stubborn fog today will gradually give way to drier conditions later in the forecast period. Low pressure that brought steady rain for the majority of the overnight hours will pass south of the summits today and dredge up plenty of moisture off the Atlantic to provide for thick, soupy fog and a continued steady fall of rain early today. The rain may be heavy at times early as the system makes its closest approach, but will rapidly taper off to a few showers this afternoon as the low quickly moves offshore. Behind the low, the flow will abruptly shift towards the northwest this afternoon and tonight, ushering in a cooler, drier air mass. This will result in some breaks in the fog during the overnight hours and possibly a few breaks in overhead clouds as well. Weak high pressure will attempt to build in to New England tomorrow, but its influence will be minimal, as skies will remain mostly cloudy with fog continuing to taunt the summits along with the chance for a few afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Any brief periods of clearing the high may bring will only act to enhance instability and the chance for precipitation.
